Design of Transmisson

This document contains questions related to designing various mechanical couplings and shafts. It also contains questions related to designing welded joints. 1. The document contains questions about designing rigid couplings, protective flange couplings, and bushed-pin type flexible couplings. Dimensions and power ratings that need to be transmitted are provided. 2. Additional questions involve designing rigid flange couplings, transmission shafts supported by bearings, and splined shaft connections. Materials need to be selected and shaft diameters calculated based on factors of safety. 3. Welded joint design questions provide diagrams of welded connections between beams, plates, and brackets. Dimensions of welds must be calculated based on permissible stresses and applied forces.

UNIT-II

SHAFT AND COUPLING

PART-A (16 mark)

1.A rigid coupling is used to connect a 45KW at 1440rpm electric motor to a
centrifugal pump. The starting torque of the motor is 225% of the rated torque. There
are 8 bolt and their pitch circle diameter is 150mm.The bolt are made of steel 45C8
(syt=380N/mm2) and the factor of safety os 2.5.Design the coupling.
2.A protective flange coupling is used to connect two shafts and transmit 7.5KW
power at 720rpm.The design torque is 150% of the rated torque. The shafts and
bolts are made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (Syt=400N/mm2) and the factor of safety
is 5. .Design the coupling.
3.It is required to design a bushed pin type flexible coupling to connect the output
shaft of an electric motor to the shaft of a centrifugal pump. The motor delivers
20KW power at 720rpm.The starting torque of the motor can be assumed to be
150% of the rated torque.Design the coupling and specify the dimension of its
components.
4.it is required to design a rigid type of flange coupling to connect two shaft. The
input shaft transmit 37.5KW power at 180 rpm to the output shaft through the
coupling. The service factor for the application is 1.5.Select suitable material for
various parts of the coupling.Design the coupling.
5.A machine shaft is supported in bearing having their centres 750mm apart and
transmits 200KW at 600rpm.A gear of 200mm diameter and 200 tooth profile is
located 250mm to the right of left hand bearing and a 450mm diameter pulley is
mounted at 200mm to the right of right hand bearing. The gear is driven by a pinion
with a downward tangential force while the pulley drives a horizontal belt having
1800 angle of contact. The pulley weighs 1000N and has tension ratio of 3.Selecting
suitable material, calculate the required shaft diameter for a factor of safety of 2.
6.A shaft is supported on bearing A and B 800mm between centers.A 200 spur gear
having 600mm pitch diameter is located 200mm to the right of the left hand
bearing A and a 700mm diameter pulley is mounted 250mm towards left of the
bearing B. The gear is driven by a pinion with a downward tangential force while the
pulley drives a horizontal belt having 180 0 wrap angle. The pulley also serves as a
flywheel and weighs 2000N.The maximum belt tension is 3000N and the tension

ratio is 3:1.Selecting suitable material for the shaft ,determine the shaft diameter
for a factor of safety 1.5.
7.A transmission shaft is supported on two bearing 450mm apart. Two pulley C and D
are located on the shaft at a distance of 100mm and 300mm respectively to the
right of the left hand bearing.power is transmitted from pulley C to D.The diameter
and weight of pulley C are 200mm and 600N and those of pulley D are 300mm and
750N respectively.Ratio of belt tension is 2 for both the pulleys.Power to be
transmitted by the shaft is 25KW at 300rpm.The drive from C is vertically downward
while from D the drive is upwarad at an angle of 45 0 to the horizontal.Assume
suitable materials.
8.A standard splined connection 8x36x40mm is used for a gear and shaft assembly
rotating at 700rpm.The dimension of the splines are as follows
Major diameter=40mm
Minor diameter=36mm
Number of splines=8.The length of the gear hub is 50mm and the normal pressure
on the splines is limited to 6.5 N/mm2.Calculate the power that can be transmitted
from the gear to the shaft.(8-mark)

weld as shown in fig-1.Determine the leg dimension of the weld,if the permissible
shear stress is 95 N/mm2.
2.A welded joint as shown in fig-2 is subjected to an eccentric load of 2500N.Find
the size of the weld ,if the maximum shear stress of the weld is not to exceed
50N/mm2.
3.A welded connection of steel plates is shown in fig-3.It is subjected to an eccentric
force of 50N.Determine the size of the weld,if the permissible shear stress in the
weld is not to exceed 70N/mm2.
4.A welded connection of steel plates as shown in fig-4 is subjected to an eccentric
force of 10KN.Determine the throat of the weld ,if the permissible shear stress is
limited to 95N/mm2.
5.A bracket as shown in fig-5 is welded to a plate. The welds have the same
size, and the permissible force per mm of the weld length is 1KN.Calculate the
length L1 and L2.
