Production Diary: Evan Forrester - Up687296

1. The initial concept for the animation involved a princess protagonist on a quest to avenge or find her father, but this story was deemed too long and complex. The director role changed and Evan became the new director. 2. As the new director, Evan created a new animatic in 2 weeks that changed the narrative completely and featured camera movements. This new animatic helped with the actual animation process. 3. Evan found reference images online to help with designs and completed tests of different animation styles early on, determining that a soft pencil technique worked best within the time constraints. The final animation was completed with a week to spare.

Initial Concept, Storyboard & Animatic

The Initial idea was that for the Fantasy Genre. The original animatic and storyboard featured a narrative that greatly differed from the final outcome.
The idea was initially intended to involve a villain, with the character being a princess protagonist that was on a quest to avenge/find her father. From
feedback it was found that that story was too detailed and long for the brief. This was far into production, 8 weeks. This is when all the roles within the
group changed. I became the director I created the final animatic. This animatic was longer than the original, and the narrative was completely
changed. The animatic and story worked well, and had great fluidity. It took me 2 solid weeks to create the new animatic on flash. It is embodied with
camera cranes and perspective shots which animate well. This was very beneficial when it came too actually animating the film. In retrospect it would
have been simpler if I was the Director from the beginning, as not only was it my idea being envisioned, but I was quicker and more efficient at
producing the new animatic than the previous director.

New Animatic

I used reference images of panning shots of forests, and rainforests and complied them all onto
google drive. I found these through the outlets of google images, Pinterest, scans of books and
Tumblr. I animated the animatic which a lot of movement, this was good as it acted as key frames
for when it came to final animation. By completing the animatic quickly, although late into
production. It meant there was more than 4 weeks left for animating. Originally, if the original
schedule had been stuck to before roles had changed. There would have been 6 weeks left for
animating plus extra for compositing. The animatic was timed alright, however I do think it goes off
a bit in some areas. This meant when it came too animating extra frames were added, or areas
were extended to add the smoothness we strived for.

Concept, Design and Sketches

I used the reference images I had gathered

along with illustrations and models, to recreate
and elk design and concept. Although I wasnt
the designer, working on the shape for the Elk
was a massive help when it came to the final
animation drawing. The horns I created were
used within the final production. These were
used in tangent with my illustrative style which
was also incorporated into the animation.

Illustration

I developed the 2D design, where then I would have animated the regrowth and design traditionally frame by frame.
However, it would have taken too long to animated, therefore I did tests on after effects. One was created using solids that
were animated and repeated with an offset to create the grow pulsation appearance. The other was created traditionally
and then transitions and effects such as glow was used. Both looked good, but I personally preferred the drawn, with after
effects. The glow created the ethereal appearance that I wanted, and it managed to retain all the detail of my illustration.
If I had more time I would have drawn keys of the animation, so when it regrew it was progressive instead of just a transition.
Overall this took me a day for the illustration, and then the process of after effects was a day or so as well. It was created
late on into the project so I didnt have much time to alter, therefore it was good I had completed the original design and
first test a few weeks into the project to have the comparison without the end for further exploration.

Animation Style, Tests

I completed tests early on into the project, I started with extermination
of media, using Indian ink. I created a basic flower bloom, in a time
lapse style. It wasnt fitting for the outcome I wanted, as it would lose
form as the colour bled. This would be the same for water colour. It was
going to be using for the line detailing of the character or background.
But this along with, the charcoal test of the horse would have looked
too messy on their own therefore a great deal of clean up and
composting would have been needed. This would have been fine, if
the schedule had allowed for enough time for this to be done. However
in the end what was chosen was to animate on paper, in a soft pencil.
This would mean the lines could be easily manipulate on after effects
playing with the level to change the darkness and quality of it. This was
a good decision made, as once it came to the layering of the
animation, the darkness could be manipulate so everything could be
seen. The test were done so that the way in which it would be coloured
could be defined. Boils were created which would have been masked
too show all different colours. However again due to scheduling it
wasnt able to be completed, this though did work too an advantage.
The boil tests which were overlaid over animation, I feel didn't work and
show the animation in the best way.

Final Animation
The final animation was completed effectively. I took the longest on the opening shot,
which was a camera crane. It worked well though, I had to change the design however.
Originally the tress would have been completely in full detail with shading and a vast
forest. But this amount of detail in such a fast motion wouldnt have worked. Therefore I
broke the line up and as the animation progressed the line got thicker and more
complete. This worked as it added the speed and distance to the animation creating the
atmosphere. Ultimately it would have been easier to animate on flash, but we stuck too
the initial idea and didnt attempt to animate on flash. Maybe it should have been
tested, but I was animating the intro a good few weeks before anyone had started,
therefore I would have had to go back and re animate, had it been that we chose the
output for the animation.

It took a while to composite all together as everything was animated separately and
then compiled. However, I did this on after effects, which I'm fairly confident with so it
wasnt too tedious. Working out which blending modes to use to layer with, and adding
effects to increase the darkness of line took a while also. It was easily achieved by
creating everything on separate videos, such as the boil. I began just testing out how to
incorporate the boil, and then the final outcome was something that I think really worked
well and incorporated into all scenes.
I finished animation and compositing with a week to spare, this allowed me to go back
and compile all my work from the google drive, spend time adding my animation to
previous animatic and also help out other members of the group.
