Product Overview
The LaserPLUS detector (Model VLP-series) is the
most essential device in defining the smoke range
for the VESDA application. Each LaserPLUS
(Siemens Model-series) device detects fire at the
earliest possible stage, and reliably measures
exceedingly low / high concentrations of smoke.

Operation
Air is drawn into the LaserPLUS device through a
network of air-sampling pipes, via a highefficiency aspirator. Each inlet pipe has an airflow
sensor that monitors airflow changes in the pipes.
Air is then exhausted from the corresponding
LaserPLUS device, and may be vented back into
the protected zone.

Stages of Filtration
Inside each LaserPLUS device, a sample of air is
passed into the laser-detection chamber, via a
dual-stage air filter:

The first filtration stage removes dust and dirt

from the air sampler before entering the laserdetection chamber for analysis.
The second stage provides ultra-fine, air filtration,
providing exceptionally clean air, which serves as a
vital conduit for contamination prevention of
optical surfaces inside the detector.

The detection chamber uses a stable, Class 1

laser-light source and carefully positioned sensors
to achieve optimum response time to a vast range
of smoke types.
The status of the detector including all Alarm,
Service and Fault events are transmitted to
displays and external systems, via VESDAnet.

VESDAnet
VESDA detectors and devices communicate across
the fault-tolerant communications protocol,
VESDAnet.

The VESDAnet loop provides a robust, bidirectional communication network between

devices, and can further allow continued
operation during single-point-wiring failures. The
loop also makes possible system programming
from a single location and forms the basis of the
modular nature of the VESDA system.

LaserPLUS technology employs unique software

to ensure optimum operation in many
environments. AutoLearn monitors the ambient
environment, and sets the most appropriate
Alarm-threshold commands (Alert, Action, Fire 1
and Fire 2) during the commissioning process.
The aforementioned scenario allows monitoring
of the earliest possible warning for a potential fire
situation without triggering any nuisance alarms.

Referencing
Environments that employ air-handling systems
may be affected by outside pollution entering the
controlled environment when fresh-air make up
is added. However, referencing by VESDA
ensures any external pollution does not interfere
with the actual, valid smoke level being detected
in the protected space. The system can safely
compensate for this transient state, allowing for
continual operation free from any nuisance
alarms (similarly with AutoLearn).
