Determination of Mean Precipitation

This document describes two methods for determining mean precipitation on a river basin: 1) the arithmetic mean method which calculates the simple average of precipitation measurements from 5 stations, and 2) the Thiessen polygon method which creates influence zones around each station based on their proximity and calculates a weighted average based on precipitation and zone area. The document provides an example application of the two methods and comparison of results.

Determination of mean precipitation on a river basin using different methods

Method I - Arithmetic mean
Calculate the mean of the precipitation values measured at 5 pluviometric stations:
Ha = (hA+ hB++ hE) / 5
Method II - Thiessen polygon method
1. Connect the adjacent stations by segments to form a network of triangles with disjoint
interiors.
2. Draw the perpendicular bisectors for the sides of the triangles.
3. These perpendicular bisectors form the sides of the polygons around the stations, up
to the limit of the river basin. The intersections of the perpendicular bisectors determine
the vertices of the polygons.
4. Colour the area defined by the Thiessen polygons (the influence zones of the
pluviometric stations).
5. Calculate the area of each influence zone.
The influence zones (Thiessen
polygon around the stations)

The area Sk (m.u.)

6. Calculate the weighted arithmetic mean precipitation values using the formula:
Ht = (hASA + hBSB+..+ hESE) / S
hk the precipitation value from pluviometric station corresponding to the polygon;
Sk the area of each polygon;
S total area of the river basin.
