Preparatory Reading
Before the first session of Phase 2 of the Module participants will be expected to read and familiarise
themselves with the following texts and the speakers will proceed on the basis that they have done
so.
The first nine documents listed below are included in the RIAI CIM Document Pack 2015;

Rivingtons Building Construction (3 vols); dates from the 1870s circa 120 and is available
to order on request from the RIAI Bookshop.
Building Construction; Adams; circa 70 and is available to order from the RIAI Bookshop.
Architectural Building Construction (3 vols); Jaggard and Drury; Cambridge University Press
dates from the 1920s may only be available second hand, but was used extensively by
architectural students in the 30s and 40s essential that it still has the folded drawings in the
pocket at the back.
Elementary Building Construction; Mitchell et al; Batsford the most useful edition is that
published up to 1959 with re-prints to about 1964 may only available second hand.
English Heritage Practical Building Conservation; Ashgate (2012-2015). This new 10-volume
series of technical publications represents a substantial reworking and expansion of the
earlier series by John and Nicola Ashurst.

These are not required for the Conservation Induction Module, but participants may find them a
useful addition to their Practice Library for future reference.
