THIS IS A GROUP ASSIGNMENT FOR 2 PERSONS, EACH MEMBER
SHALL CONTRIBUTE EQUALLY, DURING THE ORAL INTERVIEW ALL
MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE INFORMATION
SUBMITTED.
SCENARIO
You have been hired as an engineer at Concorde to design a high- speed aircraft.
You are required to demonstrate your knowledge of aerodynamics and the nature of
airflow over the wings. Demonstrate your writing skills to explain to your new
interns about the following tasks.
Task 1[P11]
Explain the nature of subsonic airflow over low- speed wing sections for both normal
and stall conditions, with the aid of suitable sketches.
Task 2[P12]
Explain how during transonic flight the shockwave is first formed over the aircraft
wing surface and describe the effects on the airflow either side of the shockwave.
Task 3[P13]
Explain why the centre of pressure moves forward when an aircraft flies from
transonic to supersonic speed.
Task 4[P14]
Explain why there is a loss of control effectiveness when an aircraft flies in the
transonic range and describe one design feature that helps to alleviate this
problem.
Task 5[M5]
Define the speed of sound, Mach number and critical Mach number and explain why
Mach number is used as the measure of airspeed on high- speed aircraft.
Task 6[D3]

Explain how high- speed intake design is used to ensure the correct airflow to the
engine during subsonic and supersonic flight.
Important points to note:
1) To achieve a pass you have to complete the above mentioned task
2) To achieve a merit and distinction, please refer to the grading criteria
attached.
3) The overall assignment marks is based on both written report as well
as oral.
4) You have to include relevant pictures, diagrams etc to support you
report wherever possible.
5) Please ensure that you follow the format as prescribed and you submit
the assignment on the specified deadline.

A GUIDE TO WRITING AND PRESENTING ASSIGNMENTS

Format for the assignment:
1. Notes should be typed and drawings presented neatly. Images may be copied &
pasted.
2. Preferred font is ARIAL and size 12.
3. The cover page should have your name, date and should be signed before
submission.
4. The assignment may contain information from the internet or
reference books but the matter written should be in your own words.
DO NOT COPY / PASTE.
5. The first page should have an introduction to the assignment, which should also
contain your views.
6. The main text should follow.

7. A brief conclusion should be at the end with your comments and views.
8. The last page should have your reference sources.
9. 1.5 x spacing is required between sentences.
10.The assignment should NOT be bound or presented in a folder. It should
simply be stapled with the cover sheet.
11.The assignment should not exceed 20 A4 pages

Plagiarizing
Plagiarism is defined as the presentation of another persons work as your own. This
includes copying from books without referencing the material or copying from
another students work. In this be the case, Emirates Aviation College considers
plagiarism as theft and any student found to have plagiarized would be awarded an
automatic fail for the piece of work submitted and may be excluded from further
study at the College.

Late Assignments
If your assignments are not submitted on time and you have not received
an extension, you will only be able to get a PASS grade should your
assignment have the needed material. Assignments received 7 days or
more after the submission date may not be graded. So please meet the
deadline.
