Type of Discontinuity Cheat Sheet

This document provides standards and acceptance criteria for various types of discontinuities found during non-destructive testing of welds in pressure vessels, pipelines, boilers, storage tanks and other structures. It specifies the allowable sizes, lengths and frequencies of defects like cracks, incomplete penetration, fusion or penetration, undercutting, slag inclusions and internal concavities. For example, it states that cracks are not allowed in pressure vessel welds, while isolated slag inclusions in pipeline welds cannot exceed 2 times the wall thickness in length with a maximum width of 1/2 times the wall thickness. In general, the tolerable defect sizes are smaller for critical load-bearing welds compared to others.
