Aggregate Subbase Course

The document discusses the material requirements, construction requirements, and specifications for three types of aggregate subbase courses - aggregate subbase course, aggregate base course, and crushed aggregate. The material must meet grading and composition requirements. It is placed in layers, spread uniformly, and compacted to a specified density. Trial sections are constructed to test materials and equipment before the main work. Tolerances are provided for layer thickness, surface level and grade.

Aggregate Subbase Course

-consist of furnishing, placing and compacting an aggregate subbase course

Aggregates-used in concrete may be fine aggregates (usually sand) and coarse aggregates
(usually gravel or crushed stone). Fine aggregates are those that pass through a No. 4 sieve
about 6mm in size. Materials retained are coarse aggregates.

Aggregates-hard, durable particles or fragments of crushed stones, crushed slag , crushed or

natural gravel, filler of finely divided mineral and shall be free from any vegetable matter and
lumps or balls of clay, it must compacted readily to form a firm and stable subbase.
Construction Requirements
-surface shall be graded and finished under item 105 before placing the subbase material.
Placing
-aggregate subbase shall be placed at a uniform mixtures and required compacted thickness. It
must be compacted properly before putting another layer. Placing of the material shall be
designated by the engineer. When placing material the vehicle is used to distribute material in
continuous uniform layer or windrow when it is done next step is spreading and compacting. To
avoid rutting or uneven compaction transportation vehicle is necessary to dispersed after
delivery.
Spreading and Compacting
-when uniformly mixed, the mixtures shall be spread to the plan thickness for compaction. It is
stated for a single layer the thickness must be less than 150 mm if ever it is more than 150 mm it
must be divided into two layers for compaction. Prior to this moisture content must be adjust for
compaction with sprinklers mounted on trucks or by drying out. In spreading and smoothening
material shall be compacted to the full width rolling from side to center. Any irregularities or

depressions shall be corrected by loosening the material at that places and adding or removing
material until is smooth and uniform. For curbs, headers, and wall it is compacted by tamper and
compactors. If the required finish cant get off the contractor shall make the corrections.
Compaction of each layer must reach a field density of at least 100 percent of maximum dry
density base on AASHTO T-180.
Trial Sections
-this work is done before construction started it must be done by contractor directed by engineer.
The purpose of this is to check the durability of the materials, efficiency of the equipment and

construction method which is proposed to use in main work. One trial sections is 500 m

for

every type of materials and construction equipment. If the engineer did not satisfy to this work
this trial section is repeatedly over and over until it satisfies.
Tolerances
-aggregates subbase shall spread with equipment that provide uniform layer when compacted.
