PowerMILL 2013 includes several new enhancements to improve machining efficiency and surface finish including improved tool axis definition, toolpath editing history, private toolpath boundaries, smoother spiral toolpaths, automatic undercut surface selection, NC program re-ordering, and collision detection during machine simulation. Upcoming releases will add the Vortex area clearance strategy to increase metal removal rates and MachineDNA technology to optimize toolpaths for individual machines.

Whats New?

Faster programming and more efficient machining with the best possible surface finish.
A number of innovative enhancements have been made to PowerMILL 2013:Tool Axis Definition Improvement - Tool Axis Mode
A new mode option has been added to the tool axis definition in PowerMILL 2013. Benefits include:

The tool axis can be defined relative to the final toolpath position instead of the preview frame for
projection-type toolpaths
The ability to set the lean/lead angle of a raster toolpath relative to the toolpaths contact normal

Toolpath Editing History


Toolpath edits are now recorded with the toolpath. The editing history can displayed and additional notes
can be added if required.
This greatly improves the traceability of toolpath creation.
Toolpath Private Boundaries
The default boundary behaviour has changed and improved. Boundaries are now the private property of
a toolpath. A private boundary can ONLY belong to one toolpath. This is a big benefit when the toolpath is
modified, as the boundary is synchronised with the toolpath and updates automatically.

Improved Spiral Toolpaths


PowerMILL 2013 now has improved smoothness of spiral segments for the following toolpath types: 3D
model area clearance, steep and shallow finishing, 3D offset finishing, and optimised constant Z finishing.
Benefits include:


Removes jerky moves in corners


Reduces machining times
Improved surface finish

Selecting Undercut Surfaces


Surfaces can now be automatically identified and selected based upon their draft angle. This functionality
can be used to quickly select vertical or horizontal surfaces, which is particularly useful when swarf
machining.

Re-ordering NC Programs
Toolpaths inside an NC Program can now be automatically re-ordered by workplane, tool number or tool
diameter which reduces the number of tool changes or setups required.
GUI Improvements - Modebar
A new modebar replaces the standard toolbar for certain creation and editing operations, for instance,
the curve editor.
The modebar makes it much easier to distinguish when PowerMILL has entered a specific mode of
operation.

Machine Tool Collision Detection


When a collision is detected during machine tool simulation, the colliding parts of the machine will
change colour for the duration of the collision, making it much easier to identify when the collision occurs
and which parts of the machine collide.

Re-ordering Curve Segments


The order of segments in a pattern or boundary can now be altered. This can be done manually or
automatically along a specific direction. This functionality can be used when engraving text into a mould
to ensure the text machining order is as efficient as possible.

Impeller Trochoidal Roughing


A new trochoidal-style roughing strategy has been added for blisk and impeller machining. PowerMILL
automatically inserts extra passes to avoid tool overload on entry moves.

Vortex Area Clearance Strategy* - Delcams latest high-speed area clearance technology that uses a
depth of cut up to three times your tool diameter with a controlled engagement angle to maximise metal
removal rates. Benefits include:




Avoid tool breakage or chipping by eliminating sudden changes in cutter loading


Preserve the cutting tools coating, and avoid localised overheating of the workpiece, by maintaining
stable cutting conditions
Use all of the available cutting length of the tool by taking step-downs of up to three times the tool
diameter
Reduce machining times by up to 60% compared to conventional high speed machining
