Northwest Airlines v. Laya, 382 SCRA 741 (2002)

This case involves a complaint filed by Dr. Jaime Laya against Northwest Airlines for damages arising from the treatment he received during an airport security inspection. Dr. Laya's bag was subjected to additional screening and he was required to remove the contents and place them in paper envelopes, while other passengers were allowed to carry similar bags onboard. The court found that Northwest's security procedures were reasonable and resulted from a directive by the US Federal Aviation Administration to inspect certain bags due to terrorism threats. However, the court also found that Northwest's employees were rude and humiliating to Dr. Laya during the process. The court upheld an award for moral damages but reduced the amount.
