Evaluation - Question 1

1) The group discussed conventions for the thriller genre and decided to include an unusual title sequence that reveals the title "The Challenge" at the end in bold letters to create intrigue. 2) They chose a simple white font rather than red typically used in horror to keep the focus on the title. 3) Original outdoor locations proved difficult so indoor school workshops were used, featuring dark lighting and surfaces resembling the film "SAW" that inspired the production.

Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media production use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
During the planning process of our production, my group and
I discussed the codes and conventions we thought best to
use for our genre thriller. We discussed the basic necessity
for a thriller film as well as including different aspects that
would make our film stand out as unusual and unique.
The title
As a group we agreed on including the title at the end of our
opening sequence, we believed this would be the best way
to create a lasting effect. By the end of the opening
sequence, the screen fades to black and the words The
Challenge appear boldly. We believed the title represented
our film perfectly as it epitomizes the continual plot of our
film, which is the stream of challenges that our protagonist
Jake is faced with. At the same time, still leaving the
audience captivated. Our title is simple and memorable and
resonates with an audience.
Font style
Our font style did not follow the convention colour of blood
red that you would expect from a horror/thriller. Instead we
used a clean cut white that that could be seen as more
prevalent in physiological thriller. We chose to keep it simple
to avoid distractions and ensure the title remains the focus.
Settings and locations
Originally, we had decided on shooting our production in a
forest; however after many failed attempts due to
temperamental weather and public disturbances we thought
it best to relocate indoors. In terms of convenience, our
school seemed the best place and we soon found the DT
workshop that had the ideal properties for our production.

The dark lighting, and dusty surfaces gave it a weary, spooky

feel that we were looking for. The codes and conventions
already found in the workshop shared similarities to settings
in SAW which was a huge inspiration to our production.
Camera work and editing
As the director, I worked closely with the cameraman to
ensure our shots were of the quality we were after and were
of a good enough standard to begin editing with. Once we
had moved to the new location, we had planned each shot
out and used a wide variety of different shots and angles.
After filming a number of times at our previous location, we
had a good idea of what shots worked and which didnt. We
found that close up shots worked best in expressing what we
wanted to convey to the audience, hence our production
featured many close up shots to show the protagonists
wounds and blood stained clothing. We also used high angle
shots to convey an image of CCTV footage; this was done
with the editor, who I worked closely with to ensure that
continuous editing was done throughout the production. With
eh editor, we ensured that the correct shots were used as
well as the appropriate score music.
Costume and props
As a group, we decided early on exactly what props and
costume was needed. For the protagonists costume we had
decided that he would be wearing clothes that you would
typically either wear to bed or when lounging around the
house. We thought this portrayed what a normal young man
would wear. Thus, we decided on a plain white t-shirt, black
shorts, and black socks. Then using makeup, and dust: we
made the shirt look blood stained, dirty and ripped in certain
areas to imply that the antagonist had dragged him out of
his home and beaten him. On the face and body, we used
makeup to apply scratch marks on his legs and arms, and
used a considerate amount of fake blood to his inner thigh.
On his face, again we used makeup to make it look battered

and bruised. This made the protagonist appear a victim of a

brutal attack.
The props we used were all essential to the plot of our film;
they all played a significant role in the production. Props that
we collected were an x-ray, a hammer, a chisel, a welcome
mat and a mobile phone.
How characters are introduced
The protagonist is immediately introduced to the audience,
as he is the first and only on screen character in the
production. The protagonist is introduced as a victim, with a
close up shot of the wounds on his face, the audience would
be intrigued and curious as to what has happened to the
protagonist and how he has ended up this way.
Genre and how the opening scene suggests it
Story and how the opening sets it up
The genre of our film is a horror/thriller and within our
production are many codes and conventions that help
portray this clearly for example the immediate on screen
display of danger. The camera movements suggests that
our film is a horror as well as the variety of shots due to the
use of zooms and pan within different scenes that signify the
tense moments in the production. The use of the close ups
was to emphasis each detail within the scene, this created
suspense and added chills which helped convey the genre of
a horror/thriller. The phone call made by the antagonist was
a clich move as it is done in other horror films; however this
was purposely done to signify the theme of horror/thrillers.
