San Diego Region Secures $16 Million for Homeless Services

Federal Funds Awarded Demonstrate Strength of Local Collaboration
SAN DIEGO, CA (January 27, 2015) Councilmember Todd Gloria, who chairs the San Diego Regional
Continuum of Care Council (RCCC) Governance Board, announced that the San Diego region was awarded
more than $16 million in federal grants to support housing and service programs for local homeless. These
grants will renew effective projects already in operation and fund new projects identified through a transparent
and comprehensive local scoring process that prioritized permanent supportive housing programs. He will be
available to discuss the importance of the funds at tomorrows Project Homeless Connect.

WHY:

Project Homeless Connect is a one-day resource fair organized by the San Diego
Housing Commission that provides healthcare, haircuts, legal aid, housing counseling,
pet care and additional services for homeless San Diegans between 9:00 a.m. 3:00
p.m.

These funds will go a long way to help us achieve real results addressing homelessness, said
Councilmember Gloria. As Chair of the RCCC, I thank our membership for the intensive efforts that
resulted in the award of these funds for our community. San Diego is fortunate to have local homeless
housing and service providers dedicated to serving this vulnerable population.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) posted its award list yesterday. San Diegos
grants are listed starting on page 29 and include support for several critical local programs and services for
which Councilmember Gloria has advocated including the Homeless Management Information System,
Connections Housing, and rapid re-housing.
Councilmember Gloria thanked Congresswoman Susan Davis and Congressman Scott Peters for their support
at the federal level of local efforts to solve homelessness.
San Diego is blessed with high-quality homeless services providers who know how to serve those in
need; these funds will allow them to continue helping bring homeless individuals off the streets, said
Congressman Scott Peters. As we saw in last weeks WeALLCount there is still a long way to go to
ending homelessness in our region, including through a reevaluation of HUDs funding formula.
A more detailed report on these awards will be discussed at the February 26 RCCC Governance Board

The newly seated RCCC Governance Board represents a group of community, business, government,
service provider and philanthropic leaders all collaborating to align our resources and prioritize best
practices that are working across the country to end homelessness. This marks an important shift in
how the community is working together and strategically planning to solve this problem, and includes
the oversight of millions in federal funds for homeless housing and services each year, said
Councilmember Gloria.
