GEOG 1: GEOGRAPHY AS A DISCIPLINE

COMMON PERCEPTIONS
1. Geography is a young discipline.
Started out of mans innate curiosity: wanted to
understand climate, ocean, mountains,
vegetation everything!
It is considered the queen of all sciences from
it branched out different fields of sciences.

2. Geography is memorizing maps & capitals

 Early acquaintance with geography.
The way it was taught in elementary & high
school.
Lack of Understanding the nature of
geographical science.
3. Geography is the same as geology
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY: aka Earth Sciences
Tradition. Physical geographers look at the
landscapes, surface processes, and climate of the
earth - all of the activity found in the four spheres
(the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and
lithosphere) of our planet.
HUMAN GEOGRAPHY: also known as Cultural
geography, covers a wide swath of human
interaction with the land. Cultural geography
includes language, religion, medicine, cities,
economics, entertainment, and much more.

Brief History of the development of the discipline:

Early geography is for practical reasons:

establishing trade routes, territorial
exploration,
Eratosthenes: 1st to use the term
Development of cartography: Ptolemy,
Greeks, Chinese & North Africans
1400 AD: start of the age of exploration
Accumulation of geographic knowledge
18th, 19th & early 20th century: use of
geographic knowledge, devt of other
academic disciplines: COSMOGRAPHY
1925: Carl Sauer
Quantitative Revolution
1970s: Remote Sensing
GIScience

Geography Today: An extremely diverse

discipline covering several major areas of study
and
involving
researchers
w/
different
backgrounds from all over the world
William D. Pattisons 4 Traditions of Geography:
Spatial (Locational) Tradition: Cartography
Area-Studies Tradition: Regional
Geography
Man-Land Tradition: Environmental
Geography
Eart-Science Tradition: Physical
Geography

The idea that geography is:

Memorizing place facts
Having encyclopedic knowledge of places
cartography
writing travelogues
means geography is underrated; we know only the
tip of the iceberg we know concepts but as to the
real definition, we are lost!
DEFINITIONS
Study dealing with man and his relationship with
his natural environment, how such relationships
are spatially distributed explaining the resulting
spatial distribution.
The study of the surface of the earth and its
relation to the activities of man.
Geography is the study of the earth as the home
of man. (Yi Fu Tuan)
MAN + PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT = SPATIAL
INTERACTION
From the Greek word GEO (earth) & GRAPHEIN
(to describe or write). Literally means Earth
Description.
It is interested in the way places and things are
laid out and arranged/organized on the earths
surface. It is the spatial context of things which
geography seeks to analyze.

GEOG 1: GEOGRAPHY AS A DISCIPLINE

Primarily focused on both the physical

structure of the earth and on the nature and
activities of people who inhabited different
lands. It deals with places, processes, and
interactions of human beings and the
environment.

Geography is the HOW and WHY the WHAT is

Form Prediction Questions

Geography is a visual science. Remains a

holistic science: not concentrated on a specific
subject, its unique and analytical approach
sets it apart.
Geography is what geographers do:
Explorer
Cartographer
Scientist
Planner
The science of synthesis

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
Giving directions
Going to school or class
Enrollment
Seating arrangement
Video games

one cannot love what one does

not know (Domingo Salita)

Learning geography is a good way to know

and develop greater love for our country.

GEOGRAPHICAL THINKING
Aims to develop the ability to see geographically
to observe and interpret a natural & cultural
landscape in the field and/or through the study of
visual representation of the earth
Thinking Geographically means:
1. Developing spatial perspectives
2. Appreciating Scale
3. Ability to analyze & interpret varied forms
of geographic data
Example :
Geology and geomorphology
Meteorology & Climatology
Political geography
ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHERS are concerned with
structural changes in the localization of industries
and the spatial factors that may explain these
changes, while ECONOMISTS are generally less
interested in spatial factors, preferring to
concentrate on the factors which determine
economic development on the national scale.
