Dear Friends in Christ:

Greetings in the name o our blessed Lord.

Yester

day and today havo proven to be two of the busiest days since our arrival In Rhodesia
The worst medical cases have come today since our arrival at Chldamoyo.

With the

nearest medical help some 40 miles away it is hard to turn anyone away. Not only do
-w aose^ their-confidence in^ns to "help" tbem*_iJLtfe_do.^u^r_n them away^ but many

minor things develop into things much worse. People wait much too long many times
and then come for help when it is too late. Just 15 minutes ago one of the last pa
tients came in his father's arms.

It was not hard to discover the sickness, as the

Infection covered the right cheek draining from the eye. Upon closer investigation I
found in the eye socket a black mass with a large oblong hole in the center. Then
another patient stepped forward with a minor cold. The last patient came with his
daddy helping him. On his left leg was an ulcer about three inches long and two
inches wide, right down to the bone. The little boy, about 8 years old, now sits on
ly five feet from my desk looking into my eyes as I write to you. These things are
what we would perhaps call gruesome, and they effect me the way they would effect
most of you, my Christian brethren. The people expect help because we are their
missionaries, so along with' our teaching the precious Seed of eternal life, we try to
help them in their needs. Up to 61 patients a day have come and we have first taught
them a Bible lesson and then did the little we could.
miles for them to gowhat would you have us to do?

There is no place within 40

Yesterday about 75 men plus about 100 women and children gathered by the
new Christian Day School to discuss its function in the area, the school tuition per
child, and to introduce the Christian teachers to them. The 75 men were all village
headmen and represented hundreds of people. They expressed their thanks to God for
sending them "their missionaries" and gave thanks to their Chief Dandawa for choosinjr
the right ones. One lady cried out, "My God has heard my praying". These things
boost our morale, and make us all the more thankful for you, out friends in Christ,
who are willing to send and support. The Christian pay School is not quite finished
and is not paid for by about two thousand dollars, but about 150" students will gati-:.:
each day to be taught by Christian teachers. These 3 teachers, two of which have
come from Mashoko Mission, will have Bible Study with all the students each day plus
two hours on Sunday.

(Excluding Saturday).

The power of the Gospel is amazing as it penetrates the hearts of the Afri
can people in this area. To date, five hundred ninety-six have been baptized into
the name of "the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." The samO problem exists here as in
your local church. With so many new converts, how can we maintain an effective
follow-up and teaching program to strengthen them in the Lord? The African people
drift around Rhodesia and present almost an impossible task to keep track of them.
They are an emotional people and accept Christ perhaps more readily than in America.
Many accept whatever comes along and know not why they believe what they do. This
makes our task one of which is not unconimon, but one that presents a daily challenge

to be met. Many of the converts, some of whcHD we may never again see, are scattered
Bomeidiere in Rhodesia and we covet your prayers for them that the Seed sown in their

lives will produce much fruit.

The majority of the converts are living in one place

all the time and we do teach them as we visit.

Praise God that new groups are spring*

ing up. From time to time, we receive word from some of the converts who have moved,
that they have been telling the little they know and now have several who want to

accept Christ. We ismediately follow their pleadings. For the problems and for the
victories we covet your prayers of supplication and thaidcagivlng.
Our love for pur lititle h(Hae and mission grows dearer to us each day, and

what a blessing it is tp journey to Chidamoyo after a couple days in the city.

The

beauty of God's creation around the mission provides a daily inspiration and knowl*
edge that setves to give us dally cOdrage and faith.
We continue to strive in Our work to bring glory and honor to God, and we

pray that through our labors this will be accomplished. We ate thankful to you, who
are making our labors in Rhodesia possible, for the wonderful way in which you are

caring for us that we might preach Christ maong these people. Pray for us, and we'll

be praying and working to the end that your efforts for the Rhodesian field will be
fruitful and lasting unto eternal life. We pray that your efforts both abroad and at

home will abound in the Lord's work. May God grant you each sufficient grace and
peace for each day.
Because of the Risen Lord,

Ziden, Helen, and family

Dear Friends in Christ:

Greetings from Rhodesia in the Name of Christ.

Again

we find need to share with you our experiences and endeavors for Christ in this land
to which you have sent us, in an effort to bring the African people to Christ.

One

of our greatest advancements has been the coming of Mr. S.. M. Machangura, an evangel
ist trained at Mashol^, to work iti the Sinoia-Urungwe areas'.^ He" wl1lirorfc^lir the
same capacity as I.do; that is, to train the local Christians in the churches to ac-,
cept the responsibilities of leaders. Mr. Machangura will receive $57.00 monthly,

which we hope some group in America will take

areas he will be responsible to you, as I am,
way he will be able to assume full leadership
ary", training the local Christians to assume
reasons for this:

as a project. In the Sinoia-Urungwe

and not to the African churches. This
and will be able to work as a "mission
full leadership. There are several

(1) I believe this to be the New Testament example and that, in a

new field, it can be accomplished; (2) it would be impossible for each of almost 30
groups to hire an evangelist under the present wage difference between the trained
evangelist and the people living in reserves who take their substances from the soil
(this is not true in all areas, and perhaps some day evangelists can be.supported lo
cally); (3) 1 feel that Christians in the African society can be trained and will
rise to sufficiently meet the needs of the local church and, thereby, cause the:
Church to grow; (4) finally, I feel, that the Church will expand rapidly with each
Christian spreading the Word of God Instead of depending mostly on the trained evan
gelists. The few trained evangelists can, like the Apostle Paul, Timothy, and others
then move into the new areas after having spent several months or even years in one
area. Some of the churches, especially in the cities, are almost ready to hire and

support an evangelist, and we are encouraging them to do so, but, if we start subsi
dizing all the churches (even with three or four in one circuit), it will become a
great burden, and the people, as we have found from past history, will expect help
for years to come.

These decisions are flexible and will be made in such manner as to meec the Af
rican circumstances in the establishment of a work that one day will function without;

the necessity of "missionary" guidance.

We'd like to have your questions and com

ments concerning this program. In this short letter it would be Impossible

plain all the reasoning and conditions that have brought forth this type of
ment to my thinking. We still lack many answers to this.complex society in
work, and we covet your prayera for wisdom and guidance to be given unto us

to ex
develop
which we
that in

all we do, God will be praised.

Recently, I gave my first injections. Diana, fdio lives on the mission and is
about twelve years old, was bitten by a venomous snake at night. Before 30 minutes
had passed since the bite, she had received the injections and was on her way back
home. How happy we were to be of help to beri

Our family continues to pray for you, our Christian brethren, always expressing
our thanks to God for your interest and help. Your encouragement is a great asset to
us and we appreciate all your letters, prayers, and support. The Christian Day
School continues with 130 students who receive 30 minutes of Bible study each day. We

know that your investment in this unit through us is well worth its cost of almost
five thousand dollars.

The debt yet on the building is a burden to us, but the

building is almost completed and 150 children are receiving about four hours of Bible
training each wdek.

In comparison to many projects and expenses in the States, we

know that this is a wise iiivestment for the work of Christ.

We covet your prayers that our witness will be of such a nature that God will be
glorified and that honor will come to His name.

We thank you for your part and pray

that God will supply your daily needs.

Yours fdt a Christiad world,

Dear Friends in Christ:

Greetings in the name of our blessed Lord

; arid Saviour, Jesus Christ, '"vhat a wonderful

experience it Is to be witnessing f or Christ in

Rhodesia telling others of our Saviour, I suppose even we have learn
ed more and more the blessing and privilege of "Leaning on the Uverlasting Arms" since begirihihg~at~Chldamoyo just ten months 'ago, I
started the building here last June spending most of my time laying
off foundations and supervising clearing, etc. plus hauling all the
supplies required for building. Helen, after the birth of our second

child at Mashoko, joined me in October when we made our first home in

the dirt floor storeroom. The heat was intense during that October
and the children were not used to it, but all became well and just a

few weeks after being in the storeroom we moved to a little three

room building which will serve as our home (later as a guest house)

until we return our second term and build our home. Since that tirae
we have built four African homes to house the three Christian teachers

and evangelist, and other workers on the mission, as well as building

the first school unit which is eighty feet by twenty-three feet
is to house the 146 young people now meeting under trees. Even
I can hear the pounding on the roof echoing across the crest of
hill, as I take time out to write to you, I shall return there

which
now
the
when

finished here to do further work on the roof which I hope to complete

in about two or three days.

The children have been patient for which

vie are thankful, Vife were only notified a few weeks before hand that

we could open a school in Jan, 1963. Our budget and program was in
terrupted with the opening of the school this year, but even with

that burden resting on us now, we are thrilled that the children are
receiving 4 hours of Bible training each week. Pray for the teachers
and the children as they work together in this, our first Christian
Day School in this area. Pray for us as we give our lives to the
People of this area that they may be won to Christ.

The Bruce Amraerman family of the Ozark Bible College faculty has

now determined to fly to Salisbury, S. Rhodesia this July, Lord will

ing. Even though he is on the college faculty until June, he is doing
much extra work so as to fill an urgent need in Rhodesia as quickly as

possible. Making preparation to come to a mission field is no small

task, but Bruce and family are doing it and how thankful we are to God
that they will soon be our co-laborers in the Sinois-Crungwe areas.

They will be laborering at Chidamoyo Mission with us, and will make
it possible for a much better developement of the present work in the
Churches and also open new fields which are now waiting as we are fin

able to go.

We were in college with the Ammermans and coiomend them

to our Christian brethren for prayer and support.

were
so suspicious of us at first, but through patience with these primit
ive people we are gaining their confidence and look forward to a great

harvest in this area. Treating patients has been a great help. Today
we treated 67 people. Several of these had returned for a new bandage
on severe burns which are quite common among the African people. Each

time as the bandage is taken off and they see how quickly (in compari

son, to. what. they SiTG used too) it is healing, they look up with smil
ing faces and words of thanks, and we feel that Christ is giving them

to us so that we can pay the debt to them of the knowledge of salva

tion which we owe to them on behalf of Christ,

To pay this debt is why you have sent us here and we are thankful

that you are placing confidence in us to be the bearers of this prec

ious gift. Your support through prayers, letters, and gifts are
certainly appreciated. We continue to covet your prayers, gifts, and
letters as we need help from God, because of our weaknesses, and en
couragement in letters from you. News of the homeland is a great

source of joy for us and we are happy to know what you are doing and

how the church is progressing where you serve. Due to the tremendous
distances of hauling and the cost of supplies in Rhodesia we are in
debt, but our Christian Day School is almost complete and it will then

take the next year and a half that we are here to pay it off as well

as the truck and other building, God is so good to us and how great
He has given unto us strength for each day. May He grant unto you
grace and peace sufficient for each day. The harvest is great and

the church of Christ now reaches almost 1000 people in the Sinoia^nd

T|r,ungwe areas.

Over 600 of these past two years.

Pray for a con-

'"tinued harvest, and for leaders to rise up among the converts who will
b capable of sheperding the flock.

Dear Friends in Christ:

Gi^etings in the Name of our Lord and Saviour

Jesus Christ. We are all filled vdth joy and

excitement as the Bruce Aramermans arrived here today.

They were so sweet

to bring us each something from "good old" America. __They_had several

delays but they arrived safely; and we are thrilled that God has permitted
them to come to \d.tnes3 with us in Rhodesia,
A

CALL

FOR

HELP

Last Saturday evening, just as we were preparing our evening meal,

a lady came to our door asking if we could come and help, A young lady
had just given birth to her first child, but there were complications,
I turned the oven off and left the bread to finish baking; then we took
the vraman and started out in the car. We had not gone far when she told
us to stop. We got out and started up the foot path, supposing it was a
very short distance to the hut in which the new mother and baby lay. Soon
we found ourselves climbing up the steep mountainside. It was such a

climb tliat the lady and I had to pause to catch our breath, IThen we arrived
at the top of the mountain, we found the newly-made village.

The family now living in this new village load moved there because
their old home is on the site v/hich we had picked to one day liave a
hospital on. The viev/ from atop the mountain was vrell worth the climb.

From the little village we could see the fei^r buildings now on the mission,
as the sun was setting behind the mountains in the background.
The lady who had come for us led us into the hut. As we entered we
saw the new mother and the sweet nev/ baby wliich they Iiad wrapped in a

blanket.

In the middle of the hut, on the dirt floor, \-fas a small wood

fire, and around it sat many of the women from near-by villages. We
could recognize most of the women for they had come at different times
for treatment for themselves and their children, and several of them
have attended services on Sunday, Since the hut was new, only the poles
were up and the thatched roof. Mud had not yet been mixed and put over
the inside and outside to seal out the v/eather, thus allowing the little
chickens to run in and out.
there also.

Several children came in and out as v/e were

After all the greetings v;ere made, we gave what assistance

the old lady then took some fiber from a plant that they use to
baskets, rolled it very tightly, and tied the cord. The mother

prepared a snack for Ziden to eat on the way, IVhen he went back, the new
mother and other ladies were walking down the mountainside.

We thoiight it best for Ziden to go alone, and for me to stay at the

mission with the children.

Since I do not like to stay alone out here

after dark, the girl who helps me stajred until Ziden got back. He got
back just before eleven, and we rejoiced that all was well as we came to
the close of another busy and interesting day at Chidamoyo Itission,

P/Bag 38
Karoi, S. Rhodesia
Dear Friends in Christ:

We greet you in the name of Christ, and we give our

thanks once again for the opportunity of coming to you in this way reporting our
labors for Him in Southern Rhodesia, Africa. The past few months have been a great
_.chaHenge, filled with inspiration and fellowship. The thanks we,owe,to our Master
and to you for allowing and helping us to give witness in Africa is beyond my ver
bal expression. Let me try to share with you a few highlights of recent days.

On August 22nd through the 26th we shared in a wonderful fellowship with

Dadaya Mission of the Churches of Christ of New Zealand. For four days we dis
cussed the future development of the church, outlining methods and suggestions for
helping the church in Rhodesia to become self-supporting. It was a great time of
inspiration as we heard the reports from the various parts of the Rhodesian work.
It was reported that in several new areas, people were asking for someone to come
to preach the Gospel.
The Bruce Ammerman family, having arrived on the twenty-fourth of July, are

^now settled in the work.

'

This gives us a new vision for the church work to be de-

veloped more efficiently. Bro. Ammerman and I have visited most of the main
preaching points together, and are now starting to go separately so as to reach
them much oftener than before.

We have twice visited the Vuti area, which is just being opened up for Afri
can farmers. Vuti is thirty miles northwest of Karoi and development has just be
gun. Church of Christ members have moved there and have called for help. At the
present time, fifty-five of approximately 700 farms are staked off and occupied.
There is to be a population of over 4,000 in the immediate farm area, and in an
area bordering the farms, they are moving in approximately 50,000 to 60,000 people.
Due to time and finances it is impossible for us to enter the area, but we are try
ing to keep it open until someone can come to work there full time. If no one is

available, it will have to be given up and taken over by some denomination.

During the first part of September we had several visitors at Chidamoyo. Bill
and Jackie Brant, Sherman and Pamela Pemberton and Mary Bliffen from Mashoko spent
several days with us. Later that week Peter Nathan, a New Zealand missionary,
came for a few days. He and I went out to visit a number of the villages, teaching
and preaching Christ to all who would hear. We certainly enjoyed the Christian
fellowship and good times we shared with these fellow laborers.
Since our nearest doctor is sixty-two miles away, which is a two hour drive,
we are quite anxious to make Chidamoyo accessible by airplane. As most of you
know, Dr. Pruett now has an airplane and is willing to fly to the different areas.
The only place where we could make an airstrip would require stumping about 2,000

"SOUTHERN RHODESIAN LAMPLIGHTER"

trees, but upon appealing to the Chief of the area, he called a meeting of his
kraal heads, who in turn decided to help. From the immediate area surrounding
Chidamoyo, fifty**five men started working on it today. We had had ten men on it
for the past three months, but the work was very slow. There'ard also six ant
heaps to be leveled, each of these ant heaps are approximately ten to fifteen feet
high and very hard.

It is a challenge to see so many things taking place, and as we see the many
souls turn their eyes upon Jesus, it makes us more thankful that we are able to
witness in Southern Rhodesia. For the past three months, we were in charge of the
radio broadcast and were able to give our witness to an estimated 40,000 to 50,000
people. We continue to witness to all that we can through every means possible
and continue to seek your prayers for that witness. Again we express our thanks
to you who are willing to pray and support. May God bless you in your efforts both
at home and abroad, and may He sufficiently supply your daily needs.
Yours in the name of Christ,

Ziden L. Nutt and family

Karol, S. Rhodesia
Dear Friends in Christ:

Greetings in the name of our blessed Lord.

From South

Central Africa we greet you and want to share with you the

work in which you have encouraged us through prayers and offerings.

The Lord is good

to us in allowing us to witness in Rhodesia and we continue to covet your prayers

that our witness wlLl be as effective as possible, and that people yet in a primitive
society will see Christ 1& us, and realize Him to be the Hope of glory.

The "warning" rains have now COTie and we rush in the three weeks before the
"big" rains come thundering down. In this area of the Urungwe the average rainfall
per year is about 40 inches and it will fall in the next 4 months. During this three
weeks Brother Bruce and I will have organized our evangelistic program for the next
few months with several printed lessons for the many church groups to study and

preach. All the painting on the Christian Day School and our little home will be
finished today, and we hope to have the Ammerman's house also finished. We started
their 5 room and bath home on August 1 of this year and are now putting in the ceil
ing and floors. Next week it will be ready for painting. There are still several
things to do like plumbing, hanging doors, etc. but within a few weeks they will be
living in it.

We have applied for 10 Christian Day Schools for 1965 including 2 in the Vuti
area. The Vuti area is just a new region to the north of Karoi being opened up into
sections to be purchased by the African farmers. Some were from the Churches of
Christ and so appealed to us being only 80 miles away to help them with schools and
churches. They are willing to pay for the school expense as quickly as possible, but
have the costs of moving and starting new farms at the present and are unable to imr
mediately help. We debated even applying, and we still don't know if we want the applications to be approved due to time and expense, but others with doctrines of men

were ready to move in and take over. Thousands of people would have been forced to
become members of these groups before the children could attend the school. The
Church of Christ does not force the people to become members j*fft so their children

could go to school.

This practice presents problems for some of the Church of Chriri

people as they are forced to meet on Sunday with the other group and it makes it herd
on them and their children.

This is one reason we also want to have Christian Dr^y

Schools. We also teach 30 minutes each day to the children and give a good founda
tion to them as they grow and become leaders of the church.

The Ammermans and us v^re privileged to journey to Mashoko Mission some 500
miles to the South and visit with several missionaries and trained evangelists of

Mashoko Bible Training School. Mashoko sponsored a Ministers' Retreat where we dis
cussed the many problems which face a rapidly growing work. Reports are still full
of new opportunities which present themselves. The African people are tired of the
many doctrines of men and are wanting to come back to the doctrines of the New Testa
ment.

The Church of Christ stands ready with this answer, and only prays that God

will provide the support and strength, so as to aid this movement. This is true in

the Utungwe and Sinola areas and so we ask yoii especially to p^dy* ^^aSe labor in

your prayer on our behalf that God will lead and that the detisidns ioade, ih our minds
will be the correct **Technique*' in the goal of establibitin$ a ^rk that one day will
carry on by itself that we might go to other harvest fields* Over 700 have now been
immersed in this area* Our task is big in conserving these* The ekpense also is
great, and we continue to lean upon our Father in heaven to ptovide* Vie covet your
layers earnestly* We pray with thanksgiving for you* Hay God bless you ih your
labors for Him.

Greetings in the name of Christ from Sou.thern Rhode

sia, South Central Africa. Aa the Christmas and New Year

seasons approach we look: with great anticipation to another fruitful year for o(jr_

blessed Lord. This season will be our third Christmas in Rhodesia, and it is a gteat
blessing to'have the flmmerman^^ttr us to" sliare in fellowship. Our third Thanks giving was spent with them in their new home. It is not as yet finished, but we wqre
able to gather there for the day in which we had so oiuch to be thankful for.
The rains are now here and the gardens are reaching upward and will soon pro

duce.

The powerful Dodge Power Wagon will swing into action more than ever in the

visitation of the areas we serve. With the Christian Day School finished and the
Ammerman's house also about finished, Bruce and I will have all of the time to pene

trate the many villages preaching the precious Gospel of Christ. The rains are a
blessing in many ways, and one of them is that people are at their homes with nothing
to do. With the Dodge we are able to reach many places that otherwise could not be
reached during the rains.

Along with the whole world we were stunned at the death of President Kennedy,
and all related with his assassination.

The news, came over the radio.

For some

reason it gave us a rather empty feeling to realize that our home country had lost
the President. We were happy to see the British flags flying at half mast on the da"
of the funeral. We had to go into Salisbury to see the Educational Department and,

with the feeling against America that so many have here, iii Rhodesia, it was a joy to
see the flags flying in honor and respect of the President.

A young man, Mufana Punugwe, has been approved by the government to teach here
at Chidamoyo. Mufana had worked with-Bro--. Gruver and also Bro. Lawyer, and is one o:
the most devoted Christians I think I have ever met.

He will be a great asset to th-

church in this area, as well as a top notch teacher. In one of the leading teacbe:.
training colleges of Rhodesia, Mufana was Number 'One in scholastic achievement ar:l
had been used to assist in the music department, and also as a librarian.

We rejoice

in this, and thank God for his appointment; He is qualified to teach in higher
grades, of which we have none as yet," and so;it was a battle to get the appointment:.

We have not heard yet about the aipplicatibnig' for schools in the Vuti area as men
tioned last month. We are continually amazed at the opportunity and challenge, and
we covet your prayers to God that He would grant the wisdom and strength to us reeded
for the many tasks laid before us.
