Dear Friends in Christ:
Yester
day and today havo proven to be two of the busiest days since our arrival In Rhodesia
The worst medical cases have come today since our arrival at Chldamoyo.
With the
nearest medical help some 40 miles away it is hard to turn anyone away. Not only do
-w aose^ their-confidence in^ns to "help" tbem*_iJLtfe_do.^u^r_n them away^ but many
minor things develop into things much worse. People wait much too long many times
and then come for help when it is too late. Just 15 minutes ago one of the last pa
tients came in his father's arms.
Infection covered the right cheek draining from the eye. Upon closer investigation I
found in the eye socket a black mass with a large oblong hole in the center. Then
another patient stepped forward with a minor cold. The last patient came with his
daddy helping him. On his left leg was an ulcer about three inches long and two
inches wide, right down to the bone. The little boy, about 8 years old, now sits on
ly five feet from my desk looking into my eyes as I write to you. These things are
what we would perhaps call gruesome, and they effect me the way they would effect
most of you, my Christian brethren. The people expect help because we are their
missionaries, so along with' our teaching the precious Seed of eternal life, we try to
help them in their needs. Up to 61 patients a day have come and we have first taught
them a Bible lesson and then did the little we could.
miles for them to gowhat would you have us to do?
Yesterday about 75 men plus about 100 women and children gathered by the
new Christian Day School to discuss its function in the area, the school tuition per
child, and to introduce the Christian teachers to them. The 75 men were all village
headmen and represented hundreds of people. They expressed their thanks to God for
sending them "their missionaries" and gave thanks to their Chief Dandawa for choosinjr
the right ones. One lady cried out, "My God has heard my praying". These things
boost our morale, and make us all the more thankful for you, out friends in Christ,
who are willing to send and support. The Christian pay School is not quite finished
and is not paid for by about two thousand dollars, but about 150" students will gati-:.:
each day to be taught by Christian teachers. These 3 teachers, two of which have
come from Mashoko Mission, will have Bible Study with all the students each day plus
two hours on Sunday.
(Excluding Saturday).
The power of the Gospel is amazing as it penetrates the hearts of the Afri
can people in this area. To date, five hundred ninety-six have been baptized into
the name of "the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." The samO problem exists here as in
your local church. With so many new converts, how can we maintain an effective
follow-up and teaching program to strengthen them in the Lord? The African people
drift around Rhodesia and present almost an impossible task to keep track of them.
They are an emotional people and accept Christ perhaps more readily than in America.
Many accept whatever comes along and know not why they believe what they do. This
makes our task one of which is not unconimon, but one that presents a daily challenge

ing up. From time to time, we receive word from some of the converts who have moved,
that they have been telling the little they know and now have several who want to
accept Christ. We ismediately follow their pleadings. For the problems and for the
victories we covet your prayers of supplication and thaidcagivlng.
Our love for pur lititle h(Hae and mission grows dearer to us each day, and
The
beauty of God's creation around the mission provides a daily inspiration and knowl*
edge that setves to give us dally cOdrage and faith.
We continue to strive in Our work to bring glory and honor to God, and we
pray that through our labors this will be accomplished. We ate thankful to you, who
are making our labors in Rhodesia possible, for the wonderful way in which you are
caring for us that we might preach Christ maong these people. Pray for us, and we'll
be praying and working to the end that your efforts for the Rhodesian field will be
fruitful and lasting unto eternal life. We pray that your efforts both abroad and at
home will abound in the Lord's work. May God grant you each sufficient grace and
peace for each day.

Dear Friends in Christ:
Again
we find need to share with you our experiences and endeavors for Christ in this land
to which you have sent us, in an effort to bring the African people to Christ.
One
of our greatest advancements has been the coming of Mr. S.. M. Machangura, an evangel
ist trained at Mashol^, to work iti the Sinoia-Urungwe areas'.^ He" wl1lirorfc^lir the
same capacity as I.do; that is, to train the local Christians in the churches to ac-,
cept the responsibilities of leaders. Mr. Machangura will receive $57.00 monthly,
new field, it can be accomplished; (2) it would be impossible for each of almost 30
groups to hire an evangelist under the present wage difference between the trained
evangelist and the people living in reserves who take their substances from the soil
(this is not true in all areas, and perhaps some day evangelists can be.supported lo
cally); (3) 1 feel that Christians in the African society can be trained and will
rise to sufficiently meet the needs of the local church and, thereby, cause the:
Church to grow; (4) finally, I feel, that the Church will expand rapidly with each
Christian spreading the Word of God Instead of depending mostly on the trained evan
gelists. The few trained evangelists can, like the Apostle Paul, Timothy, and others
then move into the new areas after having spent several months or even years in one
area. Some of the churches, especially in the cities, are almost ready to hire and
support an evangelist, and we are encouraging them to do so, but, if we start subsi
dizing all the churches (even with three or four in one circuit), it will become a
great burden, and the people, as we have found from past history, will expect help
for years to come.
These decisions are flexible and will be made in such manner as to meec the Af
rican circumstances in the establishment of a work that one day will function without;

Dear Friends in Christ:
veloped more efficiently. Bro. Ammerman and I have visited most of the main
preaching points together, and are now starting to go separately so as to reach
them much oftener than before.
We have twice visited the Vuti area, which is just being opened up for Afri
can farmers. Vuti is thirty miles northwest of Karoi and development has just be
gun. Church of Christ members have moved there and have called for help. At the
present time, fifty-five of approximately 700 farms are staked off and occupied.
There is to be a population of over 4,000 in the immediate farm area, and in an
area bordering the farms, they are moving in approximately 50,000 to 60,000 people.
Due to time and finances it is impossible for us to enter the area, but we are try
ing to keep it open until someone can come to work there full time. If no one is

trees, but upon appealing to the Chief of the area, he called a meeting of his
kraal heads, who in turn decided to help. From the immediate area surrounding
Chidamoyo, fifty**five men started working on it today. We had had ten men on it
for the past three months, but the work was very slow. There'ard also six ant
heaps to be leveled, each of these ant heaps are approximately ten to fifteen feet
high and very hard.
It is a challenge to see so many things taking place, and as we see the many
souls turn their eyes upon Jesus, it makes us more thankful that we are able to
witness in Southern Rhodesia. For the past three months, we were in charge of the
radio broadcast and were able to give our witness to an estimated 40,000 to 50,000
people. We continue to witness to all that we can through every means possible
and continue to seek your prayers for that witness. Again we express our thanks
to you who are willing to pray and support. May God bless you in your efforts both
at home and abroad, and may He sufficiently supply your daily needs.

The "warning" rains have now COTie and we rush in the three weeks before the
"big" rains come thundering down. In this area of the Urungwe the average rainfall
per year is about 40 inches and it will fall in the next 4 months. During this three
weeks Brother Bruce and I will have organized our evangelistic program for the next
few months with several printed lessons for the many church groups to study and
preach. All the painting on the Christian Day School and our little home will be
finished today, and we hope to have the Ammerman's house also finished. We started
their 5 room and bath home on August 1 of this year and are now putting in the ceil
ing and floors. Next week it will be ready for painting. There are still several
things to do like plumbing, hanging doors, etc. but within a few weeks they will be
living in it.
We have applied for 10 Christian Day Schools for 1965 including 2 in the Vuti
area. The Vuti area is just a new region to the north of Karoi being opened up into
sections to be purchased by the African farmers. Some were from the Churches of
Christ and so appealed to us being only 80 miles away to help them with schools and
churches. They are willing to pay for the school expense as quickly as possible, but
have the costs of moving and starting new farms at the present and are unable to imr
mediately help. We debated even applying, and we still don't know if we want the applications to be approved due to time and expense, but others with doctrines of men
were ready to move in and take over. Thousands of people would have been forced to
become members of these groups before the children could attend the school. The
Church of Christ does not force the people to become members j*fft so their children
could go to school.

The Ammermans and us v^re privileged to journey to Mashoko Mission some 500
miles to the South and visit with several missionaries and trained evangelists of
Mashoko Bible Training School. Mashoko sponsored a Ministers' Retreat where we dis
cussed the many problems which face a rapidly growing work. Reports are still full
of new opportunities which present themselves. The African people are tired of the
many doctrines of men and are wanting to come back to the doctrines of the New Testa
ment.
The Church of Christ stands ready with this answer, and only prays that God
will provide the support and strength, so as to aid this movement. This is true in

seasons approach we look: with great anticipation to another fruitful year for o(jr_

blessing to'have the flmmerman^^ttr us to" sliare in fellowship. Our third Thanks giving was spent with them in their new home. It is not as yet finished, but we wqre
able to gather there for the day in which we had so oiuch to be thankful for.
The rains are now here and the gardens are reaching upward and will soon pro

The powerful Dodge Power Wagon will swing into action more than ever in the
visitation of the areas we serve. With the Christian Day School finished and the
Ammerman's house also about finished, Bruce and I will have all of the time to pene

blessing in many ways, and one of them is that people are at their homes with nothing
to do. With the Dodge we are able to reach many places that otherwise could not be
reached during the rains.
Along with the whole world we were stunned at the death of President Kennedy,
and all related with his assassination.
For some
reason it gave us a rather empty feeling to realize that our home country had lost

of the funeral. We had to go into Salisbury to see the Educational Department and,
with the feeling against America that so many have here, iii Rhodesia, it was a joy to
