Nutanix Quick Positioning Card

Nutanix is a storage startup that has been in business for less than 3 years. It offers a hyperconverged hardware appliance pre-loaded with virtualization software that combines compute and storage resources. Each appliance contains multiple compute nodes that run a virtual storage appliance to provide shared access to storage. Nutanix argues that its solution simplifies IT and provides performance and lower costs through a scale-out model. However, VMware VSAN counters that it is a more mature product backed by VMware with over 1,000 customers testing it, while Nutanix only recently signed its 100th customer. VSAN also supports key enterprise features and scales more flexibly either through small disk additions or larger host additions. Overall, VS

Nutanix Quick Positioning Card

Nutanix Company Overview

Nutanix Marketing Highlights

Storage startup in business < 3 years

Signed their 100th customer in late 2013
Broadest brand awareness of storage startups
Hyperconverged hardware pre-loaded with vSphere, KVM, or Hyper-V
Each appliance, called a Block, contains up to 4 compute Nodes or
hosts.
Every Node runs a virtual storage appliance (VSA) that provides access to
storage for the VMs.
Compute and storage capacity can be increased by adding new blocks to
the cluster but cannot mix with other storage or hosts

Overcoming Nutanix Roadblocks

Converged Infrastructure: Simplify IT by having fewer dedicated

resources
Software-defined model: Allows agility in IT process through automated
policy based control
Performance: No-compromise performance through use of serverattached Flash
Lower TCO: Lower cost and increase efficiency through a scale-out model

Key VSAN Selling Points Against Nutanix

Nutanix Message

How to Counter

VSAN is not a mature

product with no proven
deployments

VSAN is a VMware product and customers will receive the

highest assurance from VMware. VSAN has been in public
beta for 6 months with over 1,000 enterprise customers
extensively testing. In contrast, Nutanix just signed their 100th
customer in late 2013. VSAN is a kernel module within
vSphere, and customers will achieve the same enterpriseclass resiliency and performance with VSAN that they have
experienced with vSphere.

VSAN lacks enterprise

data services

VSAN supports enterprise vSphere features including thin

provisioning, DRS, HA, vSphere Replication, SRM, VADP and
vSphere snapshots/clones. We will continue to enhance and
add more features in future releases of VSAN

VSAN does not

scale well

A single VSAN cluster up to 16 nodes and over 1 PB of

usable space. VSAN can scale in small increments (by adding
disks) or large increments (by adding hosts & disks) to meet
customers budget & demands.

The cost of VSAN is

high due to lack of
de-duplication and
compression features

By design, de-duplication is not required in VSANs tiered

architecture since the persistent storage is on low-cost, highcapacity hard drives. Nutanix only recently added
compression & de-dupe and they place additional overhead
on their controller VM. VSAN provides the best price/
performance for virtualized workloads.

Hardware
choice &
flexibility

Build your own VSAN servers

or buy VSAN Ready systems

Must buy Nutanix hardware

smallest 4-node block is $90k

Superior
Performance

Built-in to vSphere no extra

VMs taking resources or
blocking IO

Controller virtual appliance on

every node controls IO can be its
own noisy neighbor

Scale Up or Out

Add as little as a single hard

drive to expand VSAN

Smallest increment of scale is a

node least expensive node is
$22,500

Integrated
Management

VSAN is managed directly by

vCenter using the same VM
workflows admins already
know. If you know vSphere,
you know VSAN

Nutanix has its own management

console separate from vCenter

Viability

Leverage VMwares history &

track record plus over 1,000
blue chip VSAN beta
customers

Nutanix is less than 3 years old

with just over 100 customers in
very volatile market

Best TCO

Lower up-front costs, choice of

hardware, scalable in smaller
increments, easier to manage
VSAN has the best TCO

Expensive hardware, less flexibility

for scaling, and yet another
management console Nutanix
TCO is much higher
