Solution 1. Role Play
Call 2 girls to act out the situation. Then ask the class to count the number of apples left
in Anas hand. Ana has 5 apples left.
Solution 2. By drawing.
Draw 9 apples and cross-out 4 by the pupils. Count the remaining apples.
2. Eric loves to read books in the library. He borrows 17 books in a week. He only reads 9
books. How many more books will he need?

Represent the given subtraction fact by drawing the same object.


Take away the objects representing the subtrahend by crossing them out
Count the object which are not crossed out. This is the answer which is called the
difference.
