National foreword
This British Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee WEE/2 and is
the English language version of EN 876:1995 Destructive tests on welds in
metallic materials Longitudinal tensile test on weld metal in fusion welded
joints published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
EN 876 was produced as a result of international discussions in which the
United Kingdom took an active part.
EN 876:1995 supersedes tests detailed in BS 709:1983 which will be amended.

2 Normative reference
This European Standard incorporates by dated or
undated reference, provisions from other
publications. These normative references are cited
at the appropriate places in the text and the
publications are listed hereafter. For dated
references, subsequent amendments to or revisions
of any of these publications apply to this European
Standard only when incorporated in it by
amendment or revision. For undated references the
latest edition of the publication referred to applies.
EN 10002-1, Metallic materials Tensile testing
Part 1: Method of test (at ambient temperature).
3 Principle
An increasing tensile load is continuously applied
until rupture occurs in a cylindrical test specimen
taken longitudinally from the weld metal in a
welded joint.
Unless otherwise specified, the test shall be carried
out at ambient temperature (23 5) C.
BSI 07-1999
EN 876:1995
5.4.2 Steel
Shearing is excluded for thicknesses of more
than 8 mm. If thermal cutting or other cutting
methods which could affect the cut surfaces are used
to cut the test specimen from the welded plate, or
from the test piece, the cuts shall be made at a
distance greater than or equal to 8 mm from the
surfaces of the final parallel length of the test
specimen. Thermal cutting shall not be used
parallel to the original surface of the welded plate or
of the test piece.
5.4.3 Other metallic materials

6.2 Dimensions
Each test specimen shall have circular cross-section,
and its dimensions, expressed as functions of the
diameter d of the parallel length shall conform to
EN 10002-1.
It shall have a normal diameter d of 10 mm. If this
is not possible, the diameter shall be as large as
possible but not less than 4 mm. The actual size
shall be recorded in the test report.
The gripped ends of the test specimens shall be
compatible with the tensile testing machine used.
6.3 Surface quality
The tolerances specified in EN 10002-1 shall apply.
Strain-hardening or excessive heating of the
material shall be avoided.
7 Conditions of testing
The test specimen shall be loaded gradually and
continuously in accordance with EN 10002-1.
