Dear Horizons Families,

Horizons is off to a fantastic start and I am proud to be part of a strong learning community. We are excit-
ed to welcome new students and staff to our building this year. I am fortunate to be a part of such a dedi-
cated and talented staff and am grateful for working with this years students. Thank you for sharing your
children with us every day.

Horizons staff understands that success at school begins at home. We believe in the importance of a
strong home-school partnership; therefore, we ask that you please contact your students teacher if your
have questions or concerns regarding their progress. My door is always open as well to answer questions,
receive feedback, or address concerns.

At Horizons, we work hard to provide a positive, safe and caring environment for all students and
staff. We strive to see academic and social growth in every student. A large part of our work this year will
be focused on using data to make academic decisions for students. Those students who are identified as
needing some added support, will receive additional academic intervention within the school
day. Students who are identified as exceeding academic expectations will be provided with extension
activities to best meet their needs.

We are proud to be a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (P.B.I.S.) school. We follow the
R.I.S.E. expectations in all locations of our school to provide a safe, caring and positive environ-
ment. Please ask your student to explain the R.I.S.E. (Respect Individual accountability Safety Empathy)
expectations and how they apply throughout the school. Has your student earned an eagle feather?
Communication with our families plays an important role in the success of our students. Our goal is to
strengthen our school communication by utilizing a variety of methods. Please visit our school website
(http://www.nthurston.k12.wa.us/horizons), as it is updated frequently. Like us on Facebook (Horizons
Elementary School 2014-2015), and follow us on Twitter (@HorizonsNTPS). We will continue to send
home school newsletters, emails, and school messenger calls.
We know this year will be successful because of our hardworking staff, students and families.
Go Eagles!

our district a place where everyone belongs and feels safe. At Horizons, we have
compassion chips that students and staf pass along to others displaying
compassionate actons. Our hope is to contnually recognize acts of compassion in our

AFTER-SCHOOL TRAVEL CHANGES
AT THE END OF THE DAY

After-school travel changes at the end of the day
are very disruptive to classroom activities. We
realize that sometimes plans change and parents
must call us at the last minute to modify their
childs travel arrangements for that day. If pos-
sible, please try to notify us early in the day if
you need to make a change in your childs trans-
portation home for that day so that we can en-
sure timely delivery of this information to your
child and his or her teacher.

Additionally, if students are going home with a
friend after school, we require a written note or a
phone call from parents regarding those plans.
Students are not permitted to use a school tele-
phone to call home to see if they can go home
with a friend or to ask if a friend can come home
with them. Arrangements for going home with a
friend should be made in advance of the school
day and be accompanied by a note or phone call
from a parent to let us know that the child has
permission for these plans. Thank you for your
cooperation.

Assistant Principals Message
Hello, Horizons Families!
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize two important groups of individuals who contribute to the success
of our children. First, I would like to thank all of our guest teachers (substitutes). Our guest teachers genuinely care
about our school, our staff, and our students. Thank you, guest teachers, for ALL that you do. Your hard work and
dedication is appreciated!
The second group of individuals I would like to thank is our Watch D.O.G.S. father figures. Our calendars are full
with volunteers through winter break! Most days we have two father figures scheduled to spend the day with us.
Weve received positive feedback from our Watch D.O.G.S. and many of them are signing up for additional days to
come back. Yay!
IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL ATTENDANCE:
One of the most important things that your child can do to achieve academic success is also one of the most basic:
coming to school every day. In fact, research shows that your childs attendance record may be the biggest factor for
influencing his/her academic success. Please be sure that your child comes to school every day, on time (unless of
course your child is sick or on vacation). School begins promptly at 8:10am. Students are welcome to eat breakfast
at school beginning at 7:50am.
Thank you for your continued support,
Kelli DeMonte
VOLUNTEER
APPLICATION PROCESS

Volunteers play a critical role in making Horizons a great place for students and
families. If you would like to volunteer in your childs classroom this year, or if you an-
ticipate volunteering later in the year in the classroom, at Field Day, on a field trip, or
at any other school event, please complete the volunteer application well in
advance. This will ensure that your application has been processed and approved be-
fore the event for which you are volunteering. A new volunteer application must be
completed every two school years.

Only district-approved volunteers may volunteer for school events.

Volunteer applications are available online on the district website. Please contact the
office at 412-4710 if you have any questions.
