Attempt all questions. Each question is of two marks.
1. What do you mean by DOT program? Why it is used for.
DOT is directly observed therapy in which patients take their
medication while they are being supervised and observed.
It also decreases the mortality and increases the cure rates.
2. A newborn weighs 3.00 kg and to be given medication at 5mg/k per day divided into two doses.
How much will each dose be?
Body weight = 3 kg
Medication to be given at
rate = 5mg/kg
Total medication given per day
according to weight = 15mg/3kg
Dose on one time = 15/2
= 7.5mg/day
3. What are Dialyzers? Why they are used for.
Dialyzer is a semi permeable membrane through which small molecules
can pass by diffusion. Dialyzers are used as
artificial kidneys for those patients that are renally impaired.
Dialyzers clean the whole blood by passing it through
membrane and filtering the waste materials e.g. urea etc. There are
two types of dialysis;
Hemodialysis
Peritoneal dialysis
4. You have 480 ml of a solution that contains 8 g. how many micrograms are in 4 ml solution?
(Round your answer to the nearest tens place)
As there is 480 ml solution that contains g grams when converted to
micrograms are equal to 8000000 micrograms.
So if 8000000 micrograms are there in 480ml of solution then a 4 ml
solution will contain 66666.67 mcirograms.
(6.6610
4
microgram)
Snb-387
5. A patient receives 2.8 ml of the atropine solution shown in the label (1mg/ml). How many
micrograms is this?
As 2.8 mg of Atropine is equal to 2.8ml according to label so 2.810
-3
micrograms (as 1 milligram is equal to
10
-3
micrograms)
6. Write two differences b/w Type A drug reactions and Type B drug reaction?
Type A Type B
It is predictable.
It is usually dose dependent.
It causes high morbidity.
It causes low mortality.
It responds to drug reduction.
It is unpredictable.
It is rarely dose dependent.
It causes low morbidity.
It causes high mortality.
It responds to drug withdrawal.
7. A patient is to receive 4 mg of haloperidol. The pharmacy has on hand a 1 ml vial of 5 mg/ml
solution. How many milliliters are needed to fill this prescription?
5mg is present in = 1ml
1mg is present in = 1/5
4mg is present in = 1/54 = 0.8ml
0.8ml of vial of 1ml is required to this prescription.
8. A patient has a prescription order for 15 mg of a drug. The pharmacy has a partial container of
2.5 mg tablets. How many tablets will the patient need?
Required dose = 15mg/day
Available dose = 2.5mg/tablets
Tablets required to fill prescription=?
Tablets required =15/2.5 = 6
6 tablets are required to fill the prescription for the patient.
9. A dose of antacid is 30 ml. How many doses can be prepared from a 360 ml bottle?
Required dose = 30ml
Available dose = 360ml
Snb-387
Doses can be prepared =?
Dose prepared = 360/30 = 12 doses
12 doses can be made from a 360ml bottle.
10. A 6 years-old child weighs 68 lbs (30.9 kg) and is to take acyclovir with a normal adult dose of
600 mg.
a. Using Youngs Rule, what is the appropriate pediatric dose?
Age= 6 years
Adult dose= 600mg
By using Youngs rule
Child dose according to age of patient will be 200mg/day.
1. Calculate the dose of Vancomycin for a child of 04 years 29 inches in height and having a weight
of 13 kg (Recommended dose of Vancomycin is 10mg/kg 6 hourly). Calculate the dose if the
serum creatinine level of the child is 4.8 mg/dl.
Weight of patient= 13kg= 28.6 pounds
Adult dose = 10mg/kg 6 hourly
By using Clarks rule
So dose of Vancomycin for a child will be 1.90mg/kg.
2. Calculate the dose of Ceftriaxone for 5 days for a child of 6.7 kg (Recommended dose of
Ceftriaxone is a 60mg/kg/day).
Weight of patient= 6.7kg=14.77 pounds
Adult dose= 60mg/kg/day
By using Clarks rule
So dose of Ceftriaxone for a child is 5.908mg/kg/day and for 5 days it
will be 5.9085= 29.54mg/kg
3. If the adult dose of Methotrexate is 125 mg. What would be the dose for a child having surface
area 0.70cm
2
?
Adult dose= 125mg Adult BSA=
1.73m
2
individual BSA= 0.70m
2
By using formula
Snb-387
So dose of Methotrexate for a child having BSA 0.70m
2
will be 50.57mg.
4. Calculate the total I/V dose of Cisplatin for a patient measuring 5 feet 7 inches and having weight
154 lbs.
As adult IV dose of adult is 75mg/day. So BSA of patient is determined
and then dose is calculated
= = 1.65
Now
= 71.53 mg
So dose of Cisplatin for the patient will be 71.53mg/day as IV
administration.
5. Calculate oral dose of Ampicillin in ml for a child of 30 lbs (available preparation 125mg/5ml). If
the recommended dose is 250mg 8 hourly.
By using Clarks rule
So dose of Ampicillin for a child of 30 pounds will be 50mg.
