The DD Boost for OpenStorage software includes a plug-in (referred to as the Data Domain OST plug-in) that runs on the supported NetBackup and Backup Exec media servers defined in the DD Boost Compatibility Guide. For specific software and hardware configurations tested and supported by Data Domain, log in to the EMC Online Support site http://support.emc.com to see the compatibility lists. Note For detailed information on installing DD Boost for OpenStorage, see the Data Domain Boost for OpenStorage Administration Guide and the Data Domain Boost Compatibility Guide for upgrade information. Note For information about accessing DD Boost documents on the EMC Online Support site, see DD Boost for OpenStorage Documentation on page 8. New Features in Release 2.6 u DD Boost Release 2.6 and DD OS 5.4 introduce DD Boost-over-Fibre Channel (DD Boost-over-FC), an alternative transport mechanism for communication between the DD Boost Library and the Data Domain system. Prior to DD OS Release 5.4, all communication between the DD Boost Library and any Data Domain system was performed using IP networking. Certain installations prefer or require the use of Fibre Channel as the media for data transfer between media servers and storage systems. DD Boost-over-FC allows such installations to access the features provided by the DD Boost technology. u DD Boost Release 2.6 and DD OS 5.4 introduce Auto Image Replication (AIR). AIR works by duplicating images to a remote master server domain. The AIR feature, supported in NetBackup 7.6, addresses the site-to-site replication challenge by allowing Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLP) to duplicate selected images between NetBackup Master domains. The AIR application job count is displayed under Src-repl in the output of the ddboost show connections command. Fixed in Release 2.6.3.0-436725 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.3.0-436725. Table 1 DD Boost 2.6.3.0-436725: Fixed Bug # Description 87934 Fixed the issue in which Solaris SPARC plug-ins would fail if they tried to connect to Data Domain systems that had DD Boost disabled. 107292 Fixed an issue in which a DD Boost virtual synthetics backup could fail during the ingest phase with error 5048 (indicating that the limit on t0 segment references in a RELEASE NOTES 2 EMC Data Domain Boost 2.6.3.0-436725 RELEASE NOTES Table 1 DD Boost 2.6.3.0-436725: Fixed (continued) Bug # Description t1 segment has been met). This fix is dependent on a DD OS version of 5.4.1.2 or later. 107995 Fixed the issue in which the Data Domain file system would sometimes fail due to a corrupted ddp_send_refs RPC. 108386 Fixed the issue in which opt-dup failures were seen when Backup Exec attempted to have two active jobs using the same file on a single server connection. 110464 Fixed the issue in which Backup Exec inventories failed due to missing media errors. 114671 Fixed the issue in which mounting failures were seen on systems using the Extended Retention feature with more than seven archive units. Fixed in Release 2.6.2.4-428136 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.2.4-428136. Table 2 DD Boost 2.6.2.4-428136: Fixed Bug # Description 111889 This fix changes the way the fully qualified domain names are discovered for the Linux, Windows, and AIX clients. Customers who currently have short names configured for their client on the Data Domain system using the ddboost access or ddboost ifgroup commands may need to correct these client entries to include the domain name. With this change, customers will be able to leverage partial name checks for fully qualified domain names, for example, *.domain-name when using both the ddboost access and ddboost ifgroup commands. Fixed in Release 2.6.2.1-416269 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.2.1-416269. Table 3 DD Boost 2.6.2.1-416269: Fixed Bug # Description 105938 Addresses the issue where the plug-in iterates a storage unit because NetBackup did not provide a complete image definition that included img_saveas. EMC Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Fixed in Release 2.6.2.4-428136 3 Fixed in Release 2.6.2.0-410681 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.2.0-410681. Table 4 DD Boost 2.6.2.0-410681: Fixed Bug # Description 95869 Fixed the issue with Linux, Windows and AIX clients not providing a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) to the Data Domain system. All clients report FQDNs when reporting the host name to the Data Domain system. Therefore, the individual client names must be modified to include the FQDN of the clients when configuring ddboost access or ddboost ifgroup. 102160 Fixed the issue in which a user could not restore from a DD Boost-created backup or found that applications were unable to use a restored file without clear symptoms or reasons for the failure. Although there have been no reported field instances of this issue, systems exceeding the maximum number of device stream count limits during a DD Boost writes + Managed File Replication could create this condition. If the Data Domain system did not experience stream exhaustion, there is no impact. Fixed in Release 2.6.1.0-396586 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.1.0-396586. Table 5 DD Boost 2.6.1.0-396586: Fixed Bug # Description 83525 Added support for the new commit RPC to work around issues related to the Cisco WAAS NFS optimizer. (See also Table 7 on page 5.) Fixed in Release 2.6.0.2-365315 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.0.2-365315. Table 6 DD Boost 2.6.0.2-365315: Fixed Bug # Description 88675 Resolved an issue to disable Oracle marker handling for Oracle archive log streams. Fixed in Release 2.6.0.1-357624 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.0.1-357624. RELEASE NOTES 4 EMC Data Domain Boost 2.6.3.0-436725 RELEASE NOTES Table 7 DD Boost 2.6.0.1-357624: Fixed Bug # Description 83525 Fixed an issue that caused backup jobs to occasionally fail with an error DD_ERR_IO (code 5009) and a status detail of writeverf mismatch. Fixed in Release 2.6.0.0-348730 The following important fixes and changes were made in DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Version 2.6.0.0-348730. Table 8 DD Boost 2.6.0.0-348730: Fixed Bug # Description 44235 For Backup Exec, the new plug-in supports both Single Node and GDA with 64 connections, an increase from 16 connections in the previous release. On a Single Node, the 64 connections can be used in conjunction with the multipath load balancing feature to distribute the jobs on multiple links. 46247 Fixed the issue in which a silent installation of the plug-in could stall and display a pop-up message (and cease to be silent) if services were not stopped prior to the silent installation. 69658 Enhanced plug-in error logging to the Data Domain system. 71071 Fixed the issue in which some Solaris plug-ins were being delivered without their symbols being stripped. Stripping symbols is done to save memory. 72585 Fixed plug-in crash (NULL pointer dereference) with Backup Exec 2012 on Windows 2008 R2, if the connection to the Data Domain system was lost during an active backup job. 75186 Fixed the issue that caused TIR (True Image Restore) file truncation for all NetBackup 7.x TIR backups using DD Boost 2.5.0.2 or 2.5.0.1 with distributed segment processing enabled, to a DD OS 5.1 single-node Data Domain system. 75783 Fixed the issue that caused a Data Domain system panic due to a OSTRESOLVEFILENAME timeout. Known Issues and Workarounds General Issues In some circumstances the Open Storage application does not send complete image information (img_policy, img_saveas, and img_flags) to the plug-in. This is not a violation of the Open Storage API specification. In most of these cases, the plug-in algorithmically determines the missing information (img_flags and img_saveas) and uses DDP_LOOKUP to find the file. In the rare case that img_policy is missing, the plug-in performs an iterative search of the storage unit by using a number of DDP_READDIR RPCs. This situation can occur during an Automatic Image Replication import with some versions of NetBackup. This situation also occurs with Backup Exec at the end of each backup job. EMC Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Fixed in Release 2.6.0.0-348730 5 On larger Data Domain systems with over 100,000 files in a given storage unit, the DDP_READDIR RPCs are a burden on the Data Domain system and will cause performance to deteriorate. The Open Storage plug-in has been updated to minimize the use of DDP_READDIR, but there is no complete fix at this time. You can use the commands ddboost show stats and ddboost show histograms to monitor for DDP_READDIR. While running a full system accelerator backup with forced rescan and change journal options, NetBackup may fail with error 27 (child process killed by signal). This is a known problem (ETrack 34211834). There is an EEB for 7.5.0.7 and 7.6.0.2. It will be fixed in 7.6.0.3. Solaris 10 On a Sparc T4-1 running Solaris 10, a problem has been reported with a plug-in crash while using distributed segment processing. By default for Sparc, distributed segment processing is disabled, so this problem only occurs if distributed segment processing has been enabled. The crash is instigated by the intermittent failure of Solaris to load a pkcs11 module required. The Solaris system log will show messages as below: ...[ID 169204 user.error]libpkcs11: /usr/lib/security/64/pkcs11_softtoken_extra.so signature verification failed. See cryptoadm(1M). Skipping this plug-in. ...[ID 925218 user.error] libpkcs11: /usr/lib/security/64/pkcs11_kernel.so signature verification failed. See cryptoadm(1M). Skipping this plug-in. Note This issue is resolved by Oracle patch 150531-01 for Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit). Starting with the DD Boost 3.0 plug-ins, a plug-in code change is being made to avoid the crash by reverting to a much lower performance software only method. The system log will still show the messages as above and the backup performance will be seriously (2x) degraded in performance. Known Workarounds: 1. Disable distributed segment processing for Sparc. 2. An upgrade to Solaris 11 may correct the problem. NetBackup u NetBackup 7.x accelerator requires an external types file to enable accelerator. The external types file requires a Data Domain specific entry to enable accelerator on a Data Domain system. The resolution for this issue is to apply the updated external types file available from Symantec: l UNIX/Linux: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH203427 l Windows: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH203428 u In versions of NetBackup prior to 7.5.0.4, jobs may fail with a message such as: 11/07/2012 11:58:35 - Critical bptm (pid=9739) A portion of data to be included from a previous backup (backupid = ostqa-linux2_1351870224, offset = 661288960, length = 36352) has incorrect checksum (calculated checksum from backup image faf2aff1392269d36db7dbcc211f3d97b3f526ed, expected checksum 2345ea1603b4cb4ae2c29e5f6a9353e7832faee6) The workaround for this issue is to upgrade to 7.5.0.4 or later. RELEASE NOTES 6 EMC Data Domain Boost 2.6.3.0-436725 RELEASE NOTES u Automatic Image Replication (AIR) jobs may fail in the case where the target Data Domain system has insufficient inbound opt-dupe streams. NetBackup starts the AIR process for each file of an image set in parallel. The plug-in has no control or visibility into how many. In the case where the source Data Domain system has insufficient outbound opt-dupe streams, the plug-in is able to retry each file as resources become available. However, in the case that the target Data Domain system has insufficient inbound opt-dupe streams, the opt-dupe job fails with no retry. This problem can happen in two general cases: l In the case of 1 source Data Domain system to 1 target Data Domain system, the target opt-dupe target stream count is less than source opt-dupe source stream count. This can happen when a large Data Domain system (e.g., DD890) is the source a small Data Domain system (e.g., DD640) is the target. l In the case of 2 or more source Data Domain systems to 1 target Data Domain system, the target opt-dupe target stream count is less than the sum of all of source opt-dupe source stream counts. This can happen in the case of multiple Data Domain systems (e.g., 3 DD670s) opt-duping to a single Data Domain system (e.g. DD670). The workaround is to plan the number of AIR jobs. To plan the number of AIR jobs, you must know the number of total files for an AIR backup/opt-dupe. AIR backup will create three meta files for each backup path in a policy plus any number of file fragments for the data. The number of file fragments can be determined by dividing the size of each backup selection path by the NetBackup storage unit fragment size. Example: The Netbackup policy backup selection lists five (5) 1GB directories and the storage unit max fragment size is 500GB. This will generate 5 files for each of the 5 directories listed in the policy backup selection totaling 25 files AIR will need to opt- dup. 3 meta files + 2 data file fragments (1GB /500GB) = 5 files x 5 backup selections = 25 total files In the above example to ensure the duplication is successful you need a minimum of 25 streams available on the destination Data Domain system. u If the number of concurrent jobs exceeds the maximum stream count on the Global De-duplication Array (GDA), a PANIC will occur due to lack of file descriptors. Published stream counts include backup, restore and file-replication against all storage units on a Data Domain system. Backup Exec u Backup Exec can only initiate managed file replication from a Single Node Data Domain system. It cannot initiate managed file replication from an Extended Retention Data Domain system or GDA due to a problem with the fast-copy to make the phantom file. u If the number of concurrent jobs exceeds the maximum stream count on the GDA, a panic will occur due to a lack of file descriptors. Published stream counts include backup, restore and file-replication against all storage units on a Data Domain system. DD Boost Stream History In case the data is missing for a certain timestamp, all the counter values will be filled automatically by the system with 0 or with the counter value of the previous timestamp. EMC Data Domain Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Release Notes Known Issues and Workarounds 7 DD Boost for Symantec OpenStorage Configuration Recommendations u NetBackup accelerator activation requires: l An enterprise NetBackup license with the Accelerator feature. This license is obtained from Symantec. l An updated external_types file from Symantec. Please see: http:// www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH55064 for details. EMC Data Domain will be enabled in the latest external_types file upon the completion of our qualification with the Symantec HCL.
