Journal Assignments
All work and written answers are to be done in your Journal. Journals are
due on Monday.
Assignment #1- Choose a successful ad and a non-successful ad. Answer the following
questions about each ad in your Journal:
1. Tell exactly what you see in the graphic design project(s).
2. Analyze: Use at least 2 elements and at least 2 principles of art to reect upon the
design(s). (Elements: line, shape/ form, color, value, texture and space. Principals: pattern,
rhythm, proportions, balance, unity and emphasis.)
3. Interpret: Consider the following
! What is the artist trying to say?
! What caused the artist to say it?
! Is there a historical component to the design(s)?
! Why was the work of art created in this particular style? Who is the audience?
4. Evaluate: How successful or important is the work/design(s)? Why?
Assignment #2- Create a Personal Logo or Business Logo. Create a personal logo using your
initials or rst name or create a business logo. Use the graph paper to design your
logo as a vector drawing. Meaning use the graph paper to help guide your design
to create balanced. Font samples and lesson will be given for this assignment
Assignment #3- Start a Graphic Design Collection. Create a 2 page collage. This can include
ticket stubs, magazine clippings, newspaper ads, candy wrappers or any other
kind of packaging.
Assignment #4- Color Your World. Create a 2 page collage of graphic work in a color palette
you like. It can be based on your favorite color, warm or cool colors or tones or
tints of a single color.
Assignment #5- Flip That Color. Create a 2 page collage of work where you color your graphic
images with markers or highlighters to change the color and the content.
Assignment #6- Create a Pattern. Collect wrapping paper and solid colored paper to create a
pattern. It can be striped (horizontal or vertical), checkered or any other pattern
you can think of. Remember negative and positive space.
Assignment #7- Redesign a Book Cover for Your Favorite Book or CD Cover. This can be a
drawing or it can be a collage.
Assignment #8- Cut Up Message. Find a short quote and cut out letters to recreate the quote.
Use different letter and fonts to create the mood your quote gives. Remember that
color also conveys a mood.
Assignment #9- Sele Ad. Create a sele and add text to create an ad that expresses something
about you. You may do this a a collage. Option: Obama-me.com is a great way to
do this image. You will need to email the nal piece to yourself. The selection for
the text is very limited: Hope, Progress, Change, Believe, Purpose and We Can.
Assignment #10- Create Your Own Font. From A-Z you will come up with a comprehensive
alphabet that has a similar style from the beginning to the end.
