Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same substance that makes up human hair and fingernails. Poachers seek rhino horns which can sell for up to R650,000 per kilo due to the misconception in some cultures that powdered horn can cure illnesses and enhance strength. Rhino populations are severely threatened by poaching, with over 2000 rhinos killed since 2008 and more than 500 killed already this year alone.

The name rhinoceros means nose horn and is often shortened to rhino.
in Greek "Rhino" means nose. "Ceros" means horn. "Rhinoceros" = "Nose Horn".
A group of rhinos is called a crash.
Rhinos make their own sun block by wallowing in mud and letting it dry.
The dried mud also protects them from some blood sucking insects.
Rhinos are known for their ill-temper, but many do not know that this is due to their poor eyesight,
rather than just having a grumpy personality. They get frightened easily because they cant see very well.
Black & White rhinos are actually a very similar colour grey.
The rhino has a symbiotic relationship (where two animals work together to help each other) with
oxpeckers. This bird eats ticks off the rhinos body and will squawk loudly when danger is near.

Only 1 baby is born at a time.
It weighs about 30 to 40 kilograms

They can live up to 35 years in the wild & 45 years in captivity
Male bulls can weight up to 2500kg - thats 21/2 tons!
White rhinoceros are generally considered the 2nd largest land
mammal (with the elephant being no1).
White Rhinos are Grazers, this means they eat grass.
They have a wide square mouth which makes eating
lots of grass easy
Black Rhinos are browsers, this means they eat leaves
and twigs from trees and bushes.
They have pointed mouths that allow them to hook
leaves from branches
They are smaller than White Rhinos
They can live up to 50 years
Male bulls can weight up to 1000kg - Thats 1 ton!
