Traffic Engineering 4
Term Project - Signal Coordination for Arterials

Description

You will (each) be assigned a network of five intersections within the City of Mississauga along
an arterial road under the jurisdiction of the Region of Peel to analyse for traffic signal
coordination and progression improvements. Corridor selection will be assigned based on a
lottery system. For the intersections that you will be tasked to analyse, you will be provided with
the necessary turning movement counts (TMCs) and signal timing plans. Use of Google Earth
and Streetview will be necessary to verify intersection geometrics and other characteristics such
as bus blockages. Field visits are not obligatory, but encouraged.

Tasks

1. Prepare a Synchro network of your arterial network of intersection by performing the
following:
a. Prepare a base-map, to-scale, of your selected network of arterial intersections
and import it as a background into Synchro;
b. Prepare the detailed Synchro signalized intersection network by drawing the
individual links overtop of the base-map;
c. Input the necessary intersection geometrics, TMCs and signal timing plans; and
d. Measure the separation distance between intersections in Google Earth from the
centreline of each intersection, respectively, and override the link distance in the
Lanes window of Synchro with the measured distance. The new red
measured distance should be no greater or less than five metres compared to the
blue Synchro measured distance.

2. Prepare an existing conditions model for both AM and PM peak hours. This means
that all TMCs and signal timing plans must be input exactly as printed, with no
optimization features. However, appropriate volume balancing should be applied and
reported upon in your deliverable.

Using a combination of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) Signals report,
Intersection Queues report and Arterial Level of Service report, identify the following
for each intersection:

a. Intersections (overall) HCM average control delay, HCM volume to capacity
ratio, HCM level of service (LOS) and arterial LOS; and
b. Individual turning movements v/c ratio, delay(s), LOS and 95
th
percentile queue
length.

3. Prepare an optimized conditions model by optimizing intersection splits (use the
automated feature), and manually adjust offsets using the time-space diagram window
and dragging the green band for each intersection to where desire lines fit best in your
view. Identify the same indices as in the previous step, as well as the new intersection
offsets. HINT select a master intersection and ensure that the offset for that

intersection remains the same as in the previous step, then optimize the remaining
intersection offsets accordingly.

4. Prepare a network optimized conditions model by using the network optimization
feature in Synchro. Feel free to choose the optimize splits feature, but avoid lead-lag
optimization. Identify the same indices as in the previous step, as well as the new
intersection offsets.

5. Complete the following table for comparisons between the individual scenarios, noting
that there should be no difference in at least one of your intersections across all scenarios:

Deliverables

1. Prepare a report summarizing the results of the individual tasks. All relevant Synchro
reports must be attached. The full submission should be one single PDF file.

2. Prepare a 15 minute presentation in PowerPoint summarizing your study area, analysis
and results. Presentations will take place over three lecture periods beginning on
Thursday, November 28, 2013. Presentation date selection will be assigned based on a
lottery system.
