United States Patent (191: Bieniosek (45) Date of Patent: May 23, 1989

This patent describes a triple resonance pulse transformer circuit that improves energy transfer efficiency for high voltage pulse applications. The circuit introduces an external capacitance in parallel with the internal capacitance of the transformer. This forms a resonant circuit with an external inductor that can support multiple resonant modes, transferring almost all energy initially stored in the primary capacitor to the output capacitor. The simplest operating mode has normal mode frequencies in a 1:2:3 ratio, improving voltage isolation between transformer and pulse line while achieving high peak voltages.
