LITERATURE REVIEW ON ONLINE DATING; SAFE OR RISKY
The definition of Online dating is simply a method of meeting people, and it has advantages and
disadvantages. The variety of dating sites is constantly growing, with many sites focused on very specific
groups or interests. There are sites for seniors, sites for Muslims, sites for fitness-oriented people, sites
for people just looking for friends and sites for people who are interested in more adult
activities.(2014,para.3)
According to article in 2009 Facebook relationships thrive on the level of intimacy within self-
disclosure. In the Sheldons first model, predictability fully mediates the relationship between self-
disclosure and trust (Sheldon, 2009, p.16). This means that the more we disclose to others in terms of
quality, not so much quality, the more meaningful the relationship becomes. As we develop stronger
online relationships, we reduce the overall uncertainty about the other person. Since predictability is
related to uncertainty in both Facebook and in a face-to-face context, and the more uncertainty that
existed in the relationship, the less trust also existed ( 2009, p.17).
In online dating there are pro and cons that we should know.Based on Sharon 0Brien article ,he
said that the pro in online dating are .Online Dating is Relatively Inexpensive,Online Dating Profiles are
a Fun Way to Learn About People ,Online Dating Makes It Easy to Connect,(2010,para.3)and Sharon
Obrien also stated that the cons are Beware of Free Online Dating Ads: Some sites allow people to post
their profiles and respond to others for free, but unfortunately these free sites often attract wierdos or
perverts.Online Dating Costs Money, Many online dating sites will allow you to view other people's
profiles before joining, so you get an idea of who's available.Pictures Can Lie,Photos are often an
important component of online dating profiles. Unfortunately, some people post photos that were
taken many years ago, or that are extremely flattering and not very true-to-life.People Can Lie Too, In an
effort to get more responses, or in some cases to deliberately mislead, some people lie in their online
dating profiles. (2010,para.4)
In 2012 articleOnline dating is attractive for several reasons: the pool of eligible partners is
large; it offers an alternative to relying on family and friends as matchmakers; people live longer and are
more likely to seek new relationships later in life; and the increase in broadband access to the Internet
has expanded the potential market. Baby boomers are the fastest growing demographic in the world of
online dating, perhaps due to increasing computer literacy. Dating sites that serve cultures where
arranged marriages are the norm have given singles a greater chance to participate in the process of
finding a family-approved mate.(2012,para 6)
In a book called Psychological Science in the Public Interest the author stated that To
understand how online dating fundamentally differs from conventional offline dating and the
circumstances under which online dating promotes better romantic outcomes than conventional offline
dating, we consider the three major services online dating sites offer: access, communication, and
matching. Access refers to users exposure to and opportunity to evaluate potential romantic partners
they are otherwise unlikely to encounter. Communication refers to users opportunity to use various
forms of computer-mediated communication (CMC) to interact with specific potential partners through
the dating site before meeting face-to-face. Regarding the uniqueness question, the ways in which
online dating sites implement these three services have indeed fundamentally altered the dating
landscape. In particular, online dating, which has rapidly become a pervasive means of seeking potential
partners, has altered both the romantic acquaintance process and the compatibility matching process.
Turning to the superiority question, online dating has important advantages over conventional offline
dating. For example, it offers unprecedented (and remarkably convenient)levels of access to potential
partners, which is especially helpful for singles who might otherwise lack such access. It also allows
online daters to use CMC to garner an initial sense of their compatibility with potential partners before
deciding whether to meet them face-to-face.(Psychological Science in the Public Interest,37,APS
