3. When creating a hole, do not use a pocket created from a sketched circle. You should use
a Hole feature. Even though they appear the same, using a hole feature allows the it to
possess all the characteristics of a real hole, making the creation and modification easier. It
also allows the drawing view of the hole to automatically pick up the holes characteristics.

CATIA V5 Fundamentals
Notes:
Why Constraints?
Without Constraints, geometry can be moved freely just by using the mouse to drag them. If Sketcher
profiles are moved, so do the solids that are supported by them. In the context of an assembly, if one
part moves, another part that is related to it may also move.
Although in CATIA V5 geometry will remain in place when put there, without Constraints any
subsequent movement of elements by the user may go unnoticed and affect Form Fit and Function of
entire assemblies.
Hence, Constraints serve to mathematically fix geometry in space.
They also can specifically relate one element to another and serve as visual feedback to the user on
what these relationships are.
After Constraints are created, they are easily modified by merely changing their values or placement.
From the ease at which Constraints may be modified and from the inherent downstream associativity
of V5, the user can quickly explore alternative designs.

Constraint Detection/Creation:
These settings in the Sketcher Options page control whether geometric constraints are detected
during the development of the initial sketch. You can control the types of things detected in the Smart
Pick panel. It is helpful to have most of these items always turned on.
This ICON controls whether geometric constraints are automatically created during the development
of the initial sketch. When geometry is fairly simple, it may be advantageous to have this ICON selected,
as this will help speed the finalization of the shape. However, with more complex geometry, having this
ICON chosen can lead to confusion and the potential for the creation of unwanted constraints.

CATIA V5 Fundamentals
Notes:
The Version 5 Part Design workbench makes it possible to design precise 3D mechanical
parts with an intuitive and flexible user interface, from sketching in an assembly context to
iterative detailed design. Version 5 Part Design workbench will enable you to accommodate
design requirements for parts of various complexities, from simple to advanced.
The Part Design workbench combines the power of feature-based design with the flexibility
of a Boolean approach, offers a highly productive and intuitive design environment with
multiple design methodologies, such as post-design and local 3D parameterization.
The widest application portfolio in the industry is also accessible through interoperability
with CATIA Solutions Version 4 to enable support of the full product development process
from initial concept to product in operation.

A hole is removing circular material all at once, from an existing feature
Its length can be defined by dimensions or with respect to other 3D elements
Approximate

Concentric Hole
The hole can be roughly or precisely located. You can locate precisely a
hole at creation or after
Sketch or not ?
Note that you do not need a sketch to create a hole. The sketch of the hole
is automatically created. To locate precisely a hole after creation, you edit
its sketch and constrain its center point for example
You will use Hole instead of Pocket because you can create holes including
technological information such as thread, angle bottom, counter bore ...

by extruding a 2D profile or surface partially through or completely through
another feature.

- Symmetry about a plane
230
230
CATIA V5 Fundamentals
Notes:
Transformations are useful when you have created some geometry and you decide
that it needs to be moved, or rotated into a specific position
There are some cases where it is not easy to create geometry in the
expected plane because it requires the use of geometry not in the
plane. You can create the geometry in a wrong plane and then
rotate or translate it to its proper position
Transformations can only be used on either the whole Part Body or an
individual Body within the Part

Differences in Transformations
Transforming a Body can be done in one of two ways. Immediately upon selecting any
transformation tool, the following panel appears:
Selecting YES will proceed to the use of the Transformation as selected. The message in the
panel reminds you that you can also transform a body by using the Compass.
The main differences between the two methods is that a Transformation will not transform
any sketched geometry, but using the Compass will.
237
237
CATIA V5 Fundamentals
Notes:
In these situations you cannot use a point as the reference. You must use a plane or
planar face features. This will scale the part only in a direction normal to that plane.
You can then do three separate scaling transformations in each of three directions
which will properly define the shrink in all three directions.

Exercise Preparation
In these Exercises, you will insert existing parts and existing products into a new product:
You will need to explore your file system to find the parts and product to insert.
1- Prepare your own empty temporary directory: you will send the data you will
need to insert into this new directory:
2- Load the following parts and product:
- Bearing_cap.CATPart
- Housing.CATPart
- Roller_bearing.CATProduct
3- Use the Save Management tool to send all the opened data to the temporary
directory you created:

Constraint Rules
There are some simple rules that CATIA automatically enforces.
You can apply constraints only between the child components of the active component.
You cannot define constraints between two geometric elements belonging to the same component
You cannot apply a constraint between two components belonging to the same sub-assembly if this
sub-assembly is not the active component.
(3) This constraint can be applied since Product C
belongs to the active component Product B and
also Product E is contained within Product D which
is contained within the active component Product
B.

CATIA V5 Fundamentals

Either a symmetrical part from the source part. This involves creating a new part,
outside any assembly context, with a new PartNumber . A typical example is the left
door in a car, relatively to the right door.
Either a new instance of the source part, in a position symmetric to the original
part. A typical example is a cars front left wheel, relatively to the front right wheel.
