PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Wavecom WM O 2 modem exist under three different references: - WM O 2-G 900 : G SM 900 M Hz version - WM O 2-G 1800 : G SM 1800 M Hz version - WM O 2-G 1900 : G SM 1900 M Hz version 1.1 Package content The Wavecom WM O 2 modem package comprises: - 1 M odem - 2 holding bridles - 1 Power supplycable + fuse - 1 User manual (thisdocument) 1.2 Product presentation The Wavecom WM O 2 modem isa terminal for fax and data transmission, short message service mobile originated, short message service mobile terminated and voice calls. The connectorsbinded to the bodyguarantee output and input connections. An extractible holder isused to insert the SIM card (M icro-SIM type). A LED indicatesthe operating mode. P R O D U C T

M ake sure that an antenna isconnected. In order to extract or to insert the M icro SIM card, it isnecessaryto pressthe SIM holder ejector with a sharp element (a pen for example). If thissequence isnot respected, the SIM holder could be damaged. I N S T A L L A T I O N / S T A R T - U P Wavecom WM O 2 M odem 3 Note: - To be attached to a plain surface - Screw head max. height: 2mm 2 m m Holding bridles 2 m m GUIDE 19/04/99, 9:21 6 2.3 Electrical characteristics 2.3.1 Switching the GSM modem on/ off The device ispermanentlypowered (when connected to the power supply). 2.3.2 Voltage range Voltage range : 5 to 32V DC (G SM 900) - 6 to 32V DC (G SM 1800/1900) G ND : 0V 2.3.3 Overvoltage/ undervoltage C orrect operati on of the Wavecom WM O 2 modem i n communi cati on mode i s not guaranteed i f i nput voltage fall below 5V (G SM 900) - 6V (G SM 1800/1900). The modem isprotected against voltage over 32V. When input voltagesexceed 32V, the supplyvoltage isdisconnected in order to protect the electronic componentsfrom an overvoltage. TWO CASES ARE PO SSIBLE: - IF THE O VERVO LTAG E IS CO NTINUO US, THE PRO TECTIO N IS G UARANTEED BY THE FUSE. - IN THE CASE O F TRANSIENT PEAKS, THE M O DEM G UARANTEES ITS O WN PRO TECTIO N. TROUBLESHOOTIN G: Specific defa ults possibly encountered 5.1 The modem does not answer through the serial link A) Isthe modem correctlypowered on? J If not, the correct power supplyis5 to 32V (G SM 900) - 6 to 32V (G SM 1800/1900). B) Isthe serial cable suitable and adjusted in the modem and PC sockets? J A suitable cable must follow pin assignment described on figure 6. J Check in particular, that Rx et Tx are properlyconnected. C) Check that your communication program isproperlyconfigured: J M odem factorysetting for the character framing are: Data Bits : 8 Parity : None Stop Bits : 1 J The factorysetting for baud rate isautobauding mode. D) Doesanyother program interfere with your communication program (conflict on communication port access)? J If yes, close anyapplication likelyto interfere (e. g. mouse or printer driver). B) Additional hints J Isthe modem registered on the network? Doesthe AT-Command AT + CREG ? answers0, 1 (registered) or 0, 5 (registered roaming)? If not, check that the received signal isstrong enough to synchronize on the Network (use AT+ CSQ ). For G SM 900 : use a 870 to 960 M Hz / 50 O hmsantenna. For G SM 1800 : use a 1710 to 1880 M Hz / 50 O hmsantenna. For G SM 1900 : use a 1850 to 1990 M Hz / 50 O hmsantenna. J Isthe received signal strong enough? With the AT-Command AT+ CSQ check that the received signal (1 st parameter of the response) is strong enough to be able to establish a call. * based on general observations. NOTES ON SAFETY 6.1 General Safety It isimportant to follow anyspecial regulationsregarding the use of radio equipment due in particular to the possibilityof radio frequency, RF, interference. Please follow the safetyadvice given below carefully. J Switch O FF your G SM M odem when in an aircraft. The use of cellular telephones in an aircraft may endanger the operation of the aircraft, disrupt the cellular network and isillegal. Failure to observe thisinstruction maylead to suspension or denial of cellular telephone servicesto the offender, or legal action or both. J Switch O FF your G SM M odem when at a refueling point. J Switch O FF your G SM M odem in hospitalsand anyother place where medical equipment maybe in use. J Respect restrictions on the use of radio equipment in fuel depots, chemical plants or where blasting operations are in progress. J There maybe a hazard associated with the operation of your G SM M odem close to in adequatelyprotected personal medical devicessuch ashearing aidsand pacemakers. Consult the manufacturesof the medical device to determine if it is adequatelyprotected. J O peration of your G SM M odem close to other electronic equipment may also cause interference if the equipment is inadequatelyprotected. O bserve anywarning signsand manufacturersrecommendations. GUIDE 19/04/99, 9:22 19 6.2 Vehicle Safety J Do not use your G SM M odem while driving, unlessequipped with a correctlyinstalled vehicle kit allowing Hands-Free O peration. J Respect national regulationson the use of cellular telephonesin vehicles. Road safetyalwayscomesfirst. J If incorrectlyinstalled in a vehicle, the operation of G SM M odem telephone could interfere with the correct functioning of vehicle electronics. To avoid such problems, ensure that the installation has been performed by a qualified personnel. Verification of the protection of vehicle electronicsshould form part of the installation. J The use of an alert device to operate a vehicle slightsor horn on public roadsisnot permitted. 6.3 Car And Maintenance Your G SM M odem isthe product of advanced engineering, design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestion below will help you to enjoythisproduct for manyyears. J Do not expose the G SM M odem to anyextreme environment where the temperature or humidityishigh. J Do not attempt to disassemble the G SM M odem. There are no user serviceable partsinside. J Do not expose the G SM M odem to water, rain or spilt beverages, It isnot waterproof. J Do not abuse your G SM M odem bydropping, knocking, or violent shaking. Rough handling can damage it. J Do not place the G SM M odem alongside computer discs, credit or travel cardsor other magnetic media. The information contained on discsor cardsmaybe affected bythe phone. N O T E S
