COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To impart knowledge and skills to the students of Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat tranfer

Thermodynamics-Introduction, basic concepts, system, Properties, state of a system, Thermodynamic


equilibrium, Thermodynamic Processes, reversible and irreversible processes, quasi-static process, Zeroth
law of thermodynamics and concept of temperature. Basic principles of thermodynamics.
Energy and the First Law: First law of thermodynamics-principles of energy conservation, energy content,
energy interactions, first law of thermodynamics, first law applied to a cyclic process, nature of work, heat and
internal energy, some properties of simple compressible substances, first law analysis to closed system,
applications to engineering devices.
Second law of thermodynamics: Introduction, Energy Reservoirs, Heat engine, heat pump and refrigerator,
reversibility and Irreversibility, Carnot cycle, Entropy, Entropy change for a processes, Available energy.
Energy Conversion Cycles: Otto Cycle, Diesel cycle, Brayton cycle for gas turbines.
Fluid and their properties: Concept of fluid, difference between solids, liquids and gases; ideal and real fluids;
capillarity, vapour pressure, compressibility and bulk modulus; Newtonian and non- Newtonian fluids.

Fluid Statics: Concept of pressure, Variation of a pressure in a static fluid, pressure head, Capillary, pressure
measurement, Action of fluid pressure on a plane (horizontal, vertical and inclined) submerged surface,
resultant force and centre of pressure, force on a curved surface due to hydrostatic pressure. Buoyancy &
floatation.
6. Some Practical Applications: measurement of flow rate, venturimeter, orifice plate meter, flow measurement in
open channel weirs, measurement of flow velocity at a point, flow though pipes, laminar and turbulent flows,
pipe losses in turbulent flow.
7. Heat Transfer- Different modes of heat transfer - Conduction, Convection and Radiation. Fouriers law of heat
conduction, coefficient of thermal conductivity, Convection-Free and forced convection, Newtons law of
cooling, Nusselt Number, Correlations for free convection. Local and average convection coefficients, flow
over flat plates.
