Modern Language Association (MLA) Paper Formatting (In a Nutshell)

Format ALL of your papers in English according to the following MLA guidelines:
LEFT align the following information at the beginning of the document INSTEAD of a title page.
RIGHT align (in the document header) your last name and the page number. Use NO punctuation:

Last Name 1
Your Full Name
Course Code
Teachers Name
Date (formatted like this: 18 September 2010)

CENTRE the title. Dont underline it. Dont bold it. If you use the title of a text IN your title,
italicize the major works and put minor works in quotation marks. Example:

The True Rebellion in Nineteen Eighty-Four

Double space everything (shortcut: ctrl+a and ctrl+2)
Size 12 font. MINIMUM font size is size 11 if youre strapped for space.
Use Times New Roman font ONLY.
Indent (tab) each new paragraph.
Do not enter twice after a paragraph; all lines should be the SAME distance apart.
Italicize major works
o (major works are books, movie titles, album titles, etc.)
Put minor works in quotations. Put punctuation inside the quotation marks.
o (minor works are chapter titles, poems of larger collections, short stories from larger
collections, song titles, etc.)

A Character Lost The Bourne Identity
Good characters are called upon to perform a variety of arduous feats to prove their worth and
vanquish their enemies. Jason Bourne, a character acted by Matt Damon and
designed by Robert Ludlum in The Bourne Identity, is one of these
characters who rises to the challenge of becoming a hero. This film, directed by Doug Liman, exemplifies
a character who becomes a hero not for anyone else, but for himself; in
experiencing a loss of identity, his journey requires that he proves his worth
as a character who recreates himself despite his obstacles. In his quest to
find himself, Jason Bourne is a character who ultimately becomes lost
through deliberately taking advantage of those who help him, monopolizing
those who stand in his way, and finally through becoming a character who
cannot be found due to his own flaws.
Inserting Page Numbers How-To:
You MUST use the header function in Word in order to be
able to do any editing without moving your page numbers.
Also, in your header, if you simply TYPE the page number it
will show up as that page on ALL pages (ie. All pages will be
Bourne 1, not Bourne 1 for page 1, Bourne 2 for
page 2, and so on).

In Microsoft Office:
At the top select the Insert menu. Click on page
number at the left and select the one that has the
page number at the top right.
Add your last name before it and then hit the
space bar.
Change the font to Times New Roman, as the
default will be Calibri.

How to Double Space your text
In Microsoft Office 2007 and Higher:
Highlight all text.
Click on the icon to the right of the left, centre,
right, justify icons
at the top.
Select 2.0

Shortcut:
Type Ctrl+a and Ctrl+2 do not merely hit
enter twice after each line. This will result in major
formatting issues after you edit.

Good Header. Follows
proper format. Notice
formatting of date and
proper spelling of all names.
Title is formatted properly, is centred on the page (using the
centre button at the top, not by hitting space or tab to get
here). Larger text (film / book) is italicized.
Students last name and
page number go here. Use
Insert > Page Numbers
for this feature.
Good hook.
