Seven Principles of Universal Design

The document describes several designs from Japan that demonstrate principles of universal design. It discusses 7 designs in particular: an automated toll way, a toilet with a built-in lavatory, right/left hand use shears, a bidet-style toilet, a fire alarm button, a ground floor evacuation map, and a supermarket cashier's counter. For each design, it explains how the design incorporates one of the principles of universal design such as equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approach and use.

The users/drivers do not need to stop by and pay for
passage. Instead, a sensor device detects if there's an
incoming vehicle then automatically charges the toll fee
to the bank and opens the gate. Thus, flow of vehicles is
not disrupted.
The faucet works
after using and
flushing the toilet.
It automatically
discharges clean
water to be used
for hand washing.
The used-up
water will then be
drained from the
lavatory to fill-up
the water tank.

This is a modern
bidet-style toilet
that has control
buttons beside the
toilet seat.
Aside from the
Japanese and
English characters
indicated, there are
illustrations that
simply des-cribes
the func-tion of
each button. Both
the plus-minus sign
and light indicate
the pressure of
water that comes
out from the bidet.
The electric fan is a
modern style, with
control buttons at
the top. Labels and
figures are
associated beside
each button for easy
understanding. The
use of the design is
easy to understand
and is easy to
manipulate and use.
It accommodates a
wide range of
literacy and
language skills.

It doesnt take a genius to understand that this is a fire
alarm button. It was set high enough for kids not to play
with it.
Looking at the
picture and
following the
arrow makes
everyone
understand
what it is all
about. If only
everyone will
take time and
notice the
elevation map,
everyone will
probably have
no problem in
times of escape.

For a lever-handle faucet, similar application mechanism
with the lever-handle applies. In addition, it also minimizes
effort in choosing for a water temperature since there is a
red and blue sticker on the faucet. The red side indicates
hot water while the blue side indicates cold water.
Instead of the typical
round-shaped
doorknob, a lever
handle is most
efficient when it
comes to physical
effort executed by
the user. It lessens the
user's effort since a
downward force will
open the door with a
lever handle while
gripping and turning
action needs to be
done when opening
a door with a
doorknob. Thus, there
really is a minimal
physical effort in lever
handles.
