Solving a quadratic can be done in different
ways.

Square Root
Solving by square root is done when the
equation has an x
2
and a constant term only. If
this is the case, isolate the x
2
and then take the
square root of both sides.
Example:
3x
2
+9=39
-9 -9
3x
2
=48
/3 /3
x
2
=16

Factoring
Some times, a quadratic equation can be solved
by factoring. The first step is to set the equation
equal to zero.
Example:
3x
2
-8=2x
-2x -2x
3x
2
-2x -8=0
Next ask the first question: What factors of a*c
add up to b?
a*c= 3*-8 = -24
Factors of -24 and what they add up to
1 -24 1+-24=-23
2 -12 1+-12=-11
3 -8 3+-8=-5
4 -6 4+-6=-2
Use these factors to fill in the box.
x -2
3x 3x
2
-6x
4 4x -8
The factored form is (3x+2)(x-4)=0
Set each factor equal to zero and solve for x.
3x+2=0 x-4=0
-2 -2 +4 +4
3x= -2 x=4
/3 /3

Quadratic Formula
All quadratic functions can be solved using the
quadratic formula, ! !
!!! !
!
!!!"
!!
.
First set the equation equal to zero and then
indentify a, b, and c. Then fill them into the
formula and simplify.
Example:
3x
2
-4x=5
-5 -5
3x
2
-4x-5=0
a=3, b=-4, c=-5

Discriminant
The part of the quadratic formula under the
radical (square root sign) is called the
discriminant (b
2
-4ac). This determines the
number of solutions the equation will have (2, 1
or none).
Example of 2 solutions:
2x
2
+6x-5=0
(6)
2
-4(2)(-5)
36+40=76
Since 76 is greater then 0, there are 2 solutions.
Example of 1 solution:
5x
2
+10x+5=0
(10)
2
-4(5)(5)
100-100=0
Since the discriminant is 0, there is 1 solution.
Example of no solutions:
3x
2
+2x+1=0
(2)
2
-4(3)(1)
4-12=-8
Since -8 is less than zero, there are no real
solutions because it is not possible to take the
square root of a negative number.
