Editing Curve Label Styles

Concept
Each curve label style has properties that define what type of data the label style contains, what text style
the label style uses, and what units the label style uses. Each label style has a unique name. You can edit a
label style to change any of these aspects.
NOE he !ave and "elete buttons in the Edit #abel !tyles dialog box commit the changes that you
have made. Clic$ing Cancel after clic$ing !ave or "elete does not undo your changes.

o edit a curve label style
&. 'rom the #abels menu, choose Edit #abel !tyles to display the Edit #abel !tyles dialog box.
(. Clic$ the Curve #abel !tyles tab.

'rom the Name list, select the name of the label style that you want to edit.
ype a new name in the Name list to create a new label style. +e sure to clic$ !ave to save the
new style. #abel style names are limited to (,, characters, including path and file extension.
-nvalid characters include \ / : * ? " < > |.
NOE 'or future upgrading purposes, it is recommended that you do not edit the default label styles.
-nstead, create new label styles for your custom requirements. Or, after editing a default label style, save
it to a new name.
.hen you select a style, the ext /bove and ext +elow sections of the dialog box display the selected
data elements. he box on the right shows you a preview of what this label would loo$ li$e.
0. You can edit any of the following label style items*
1 Text Pr!erties
2nder ext %roperties, select a text style for the label. -f you select 3Current3, then any time that
you label an ob4ect using this style, the label is created using the current text style.
NOE -f you subsequently change the current text style for the drawing 5!Y#E command6, then
the labels that were created using the 3Current3 option are updated to the new current style, even
if the labels are static or disassociated.
-f you selected a 7ero8height style, then specify a height in the 9eight box.
NOE -f the selected text style has a fixed height, then the value in the 9eight box has no effect
on the height.
You can specify an Offset for the label. his value is not a distance: it is a factor. he offset value
that you specify is a factor that is multiplied by the text height to compute the actual offset
distance.
!elect a #ayer for the label. -f you select 3Current3, then any time you label an ob4ect using this
style, the label is placed on the current layer.
NOE -f you subsequently change the current layer for the drawing, then the labels that were
created using the 3Current3 option remain on their original layer.
!elect one of the following 4ustification methods for the text*
Le"t* #eft84ustifies the label on the ob4ect.
#ig$t* ;ight84ustifies the label on the ob4ect.
Center* Centers the label on the ob4ect.
1 %ata Ele&ents
'rom the "ata list, select the data element that you want to include in the label.
.hen you define curve label styles, you can specify what items you want to label on each curve.
hese items are called data elements. !elect a data element, and then clic$ the ext /bove or ext
+elow button to add that element to the label style.

ext +rea$ Creates multiple text ob4ects. / text brea$ can be used to separate the labels on an
ob4ect. .hen you insert this data element, it shows up as <&==< in the preview box.

-nserts a plus>minus 5 ' 6 symbol into the label.

-nserts a delta symbol into the label.
he %lus>?inus symbol only appears in the labels if the text style being used for the label supports
the %lus>?inus symbol. ?any true type fonts do not support this character.

Clic$ the ext /bove button to place the data element in the ext /bove box. .hen you label an
ob4ect with this style, any data element in the ext /bove box appears in the label above the
ob4ect.
Clic$ the ext +elow button to place the data element in the ext +elow box. /ny data element in
the ext +elow box appears in the label below the ob4ect.
NOE he &==.== preview values next to the ext /bove and ext +elow boxes are numeric
place holders and do not necessarily represent actual values.
1 Text (bve and Text )el*
he ext /bove and ext +elow boxes contain the data elements for a label style. he box on the
right shows a preview of what the label loo$s li$e.

You can type text into these boxes. his text appears in the label. 'or example, you can type
&eters into one of these boxes to create metric labels with the word <meters< appended to the end
of the label.

You can ma$e any of the following changes to the data elements for a label style*

-n the ext /bove or ext +elow box, you can type, select, delete, copy, and paste text.
You can add prefixes or suffixes to labels. 'or example, you can type &eters to append the word
<meters< to the end of a label.
You can add formulas to labels by inserting them into the ext /bove or the ext +elow boxes.

2nder 2nits, select #inear to display the #inear 2nits dialog box.
Enter the precision values for the following units*
Linear* 'or labeling lengths. he precision value is used to label the delta angle.
,r&ula* 'or labeling the results of formula calculations.
Crdinate* 'or labeling northing and easting coordinates.
NOE You can either type a value in the boxes, or use the up and down arrows to select a value.
Clic$ OA to return to the Edit #abel !tyles dialog box.
2nder 2nits, select /ngular to display the /ngular 2nits dialog box.
!elect the /llow ext !paces chec$ box to place spaces in angular labels. his setting is typically
used only for line labels.
-n the /ngular box, enter the precision for displaying angles. his precision value is used to label
chord direction only.
-n the 'ormula box, enter the precision for displaying the results of formula calculations. his
precision value is used to label formulas that are applied to chord direction.
Clic$ OA to return to the Edit #abel !tyles dialog box.

2nder ext /bove and>or ext +elow, do the following*
!elect the /rrow chec$ box to insert arrows on the ob4ects you label to indicate their direction.
!elect either ic$ or Crows 'eet to insert either tic$ mar$s or crows feet on the ob4ects you label.
