Intense Prewriting Discourse Community: Retirement Home, Social Worker

3. Data Collection: a. Observe: What are they doing? What kinds of things do they say? What do they write? Members of the Social Work discourse community are always on the go. They are very much involved in the care planning of their patients. They attend meetings in which they meet with the family members of their patients as well as other instrumental staff and design a plan of care for each patient. The social worker will usually be the leader of these meetings. Some of the notes they write down are things that the social worker considers important for the other staff to know. Other staff consists of: nurses, activities, and even family members. Social workers carry a work phone in which they can be reached at any time. (their work never stops) They also do some marketing in their field. They give tours to people from the outside and a brief estimate of the cost. They attend quarterly meetings in which they give bring up any new concerns. Social Workers are always checking on their patients and updating families on significant changes in health. They connect residents with outside sources. They are constantly taking down notes of their patients. They are the go-to-person when difficult news needs to be given to the patient.

4. Data Analysis:

a. The shared goal of the community is to help patients reach their set goals completely or at least the closest possible. The role of a social worker is to provide sources for the patients, assess patients when they first arrive and at different times during their stay, and to help patients stay connected with themselves and the outside community. This group is very instrumental in making sure that the needs of the patients are met. b. Communication methods include: Phone calls, email, text messages, Initial interview form, Social history form, meetings and community brochures. c. Purpose of each mechanism of communication?

Phone calls, Emails, txt messages These are used to inform each other of new patients, changes in condition, reminders, to contact family members and inform them of any changes and to find sources that can help the patients. Initial Interview forms: This is used to gather basic information about the patient; age, gender, birthday, etc. Social History Form: This form explains in more depth the history of the patient; marital status, children, interest, education, patients life style, etc. This information can help the social services team to solve problems that might arise with the patient. Its also good to have in their records. Meetings: Meetings are some of the most effective ways of communication. These can be done between the staff to evaluate a patient or can be done with family to further discuss a patients condition and come up with a plan of care. Community Brochures: Most communities/companies have brochures in which they give information about their services. This is a way selling and encouraging people to join. They can be given to different corporations to distribute out to their clients.

d. Language: Social workers tend to refer to their clients as residents in retirement communities. Depending on the field where they are working, they address the patients differently. When writing about a patient they describe their physical and ethnic background first and their name after.

e. Analyze your data: i.Conflicts within the community include; Patients family members with high expectations. ii. Difficulties that may arise in this discourse community are language barriers, problems communicating with patients, and dealing with problematic family members. iii. The authority in this discourse community usually comes from a Director above the social worker. In a nursing home, an Executive Director would have the authority. iv. Besides having a college education, those who are new to this discourse community should have been exposed to this field by doing volunteer work in a similar setting and taken classes that help you develop your communication skills. 5. Analysis of how I might fit in the discourse community: a. There are a few new things that I learned while conducting the interviews and gathering information. It is very important to pay attention to even the smallest details such as how to address an email and who to include in the conversation. At times we say things with not thinking twice and dont realize that our words can make us seem a certain way in the work place. It is important to prepare yourself to be in front of a people, to be assertive and also to take your training serious. b. Life experiences that I think will help me once Im a part of this discourse community are; working at a retirement community for the past 9 years- it has not only taught me to be patient but

also to deal with people of different backgrounds. Ive been exposed to speaking to large groups of people, leading group discussions and socializing with well-educated people. c. I think becoming a member of this discourse community will impact my life in a way that will encourage me to expand intellectually. This discourse community calls for people who know their stuff and are well prepared. Knowledge in the field will not only allow me to help others but myself as well; including my family.
