Lab 2

This document describes a lab experiment on power electronics devices and waveforms. Students are asked to: 1. Simulate a half-wave rectifier circuit with a resistive load using different power switches (diode, thyristor, MOSFET) and plot the output voltage and current waveforms. 2. Analyze and compare the waveforms for each switch, noting peak voltage, RMS voltage, average voltage, and other parameters. 3. Suggest modifications needed to the thyristor and MOSFET circuits to obtain the same output as the diode circuit and justify the suggestions. 4. Discuss the initial output produced by each switch and compare the advantages of thyristor and

LAB Part 2
TITLE: POWER ELECTRONICS DEVICE AND WAVEFORMS
OBJECTIVE
(a) To compose, simulate, analyze and design circuit for half-wave rectifier with
R Load and compare with theoretical ideal parameters.
(b) To analyze the waveforms of the half-wave rectifier circuit and distinguish the
significant parameters.
(c) Ability to recognize and suggest control strategy between un-controlled, semicontrolled and fully-controlled power switch.
(d) Ability to validate and propose circuit design based on practical datasheet
informations.
INTRODUCTION
PSIM is a simulation software from Powersim Incorporated specifically designed for
power electronics and motor control. With fast simulation and friendly user interface,
PSIM provides a powerful simulation environment to address any simulation needs.
The PSIM package consists of three parts: PSIM schematic program, PSIM Simulator,
and waveform display program Simview.
The switch gating block :

It defines the gating pattern of a switch or a switch module. Each turn-on or turn-off
action is counted as one switching point.
For example, for the following gating pattern, there are 6 switching points, and the
switching points are: 35, 92, 175, 187, 345, and 357.

NOTE: The gating block can be connected to the gate node of a switch only. It can not
be connected to any other elements.

SECTION A: VOLTAGE, CURRENT and POWER PLOTS

Procedure
a) By referring to Appendix B, you are to establish PSIM schematics circuit of a
half-wave rectifier to simulate output voltage and current waveforms for
resistive (R) load using different power switches.
b) Sketch the expected schematic for half-wave rectifier consist of power diode.

c) Run the simulation an plot 2 cycles (0 4 ) of the load voltage and current
waveforms and present the snapshot of the graphs (including the gating signal if
applicable).
[4m]
d) Shortly discuss your observations on the graphs and the measured
parameters.
[3m]
e) Repeat (b) to (d) with Thyristor switch replacing power diode by using Switch
gating block controller with below parameters:

[9m]
f) Suggest the changes to be made if you are to get the exactly same initial
output results of (c). Briefly justifify your suggestions.
[4m]
g) Repeat (e) and (f) using Mosfet switch replacing Thyristor.
