SERIES 400 ANALYTICAL GAS CHROMATOGRAPH APPLICATION 196-A:
ANALYSIS OF REFINERY GAS WITH INITIAL C6+ BACKFLUSH
Application 196-A (Analysis of Refinery Gas with Initial C6+ Backflush) provides a fast, single sample analysis of up to 21 different hydrocarbons and various types of refinery gases. Included in the analysis are separations of H2S, 1,3-butadiene, cis-and transButene-2, butene-1, isoButylene and iso-Pentane. The C, olefins are particularly difficult to separate when al are present in the sample, but a special MultiCoat Column and multiple column technology provides near baseline resolution of these components. In this application the backflush of the C6+ hydrocarbons is based on an initial backflush column switching technique. This technique produces a single, sharp C6+ peak for better sensitivity and more precise electronic integration as compared to the broad peaks from conventional backflushing at the end of the analysis. A dual thermal conductivity detector (TCD), equipped with thermistor detector elements, provides high sensitivity over a wide concentration range for all components. The glass-encapsulated thermistor elements also are immune to corrosion and oxygen burn-out, thereby contributing to reliability and long system life.
CARLE SERIES 400 ANALYTICAL GAS CHROMATOGRAPH The patented Carle Hydrogen Transfer System (HTS) achieves sensitive and linear hydrogen measurement from 0.1% (1000 ppm) to 100% mole %. An internal palladium membrane, at elevated temperature, is selectively permeable to hydrogen. Hydrogen transfers across the membrane into a nitrogen carrier and is detected on a separate TCD. The wide thermal conductivity difference between the nitrogen carrier gas and hydrogen provides linearity and sensitivity impossible to achieve with a helium carrier. This method allows the operator to perform a complete analysis (including H2) in 45 minutes from a single sample injection. CONDITIONS: Carrier Gas Flow Rate: 30mL/min Carrier Gas: Helium HTS Carrier Gas: Nitrogen Temperature: 65C Attenuation: x 64 Sample Volume: 1.0 mL

SAMPLE OPERATION The valve/column configuration consists of a 10-port multifunction sampling and switching valve, two sixport switching valves and four analytical columns. To begin the analysis Valve 1 is rotated to Position 2 (CW), injecting sample into the chromatographic system. As soon as n-Pentane enters column 2A, Valve 1 is rotated to Position 1(CCW). The foreflush of Column 4 quickly backflushes the C5= and C6+ off of Column 1 directly to the first thermal conductivity detector (TCD). Hydrogen, along with the other light gases, is not retained by Column 2A/2B or Column 3 and proceeds immediately to Column 4. After the hydrogen is separated by Column 4, it passes into the Hydrogen Transfer System (HTS) and then into the nitrogen carrier before going to the TCD 2 detector. After the hydrogen is detected, both Valves 2 and 3 are rotated to Position 2 (CW), bypassing Columns 3 and 4, respectively. Carbon dioxide, ethylene and ethane are stored on Column 3, and O2, N2, CH4 and CO are stored on Column 4. This permits all the hydrocarbon separations to be made by the special MultiCoat and MultiSegment Column.
When pentane is detected, Valve 2 is rotated to Position 1 (CCW). Stored CO2 ethylene and ethane elute and go directly to the TCD 1 detector. When Valve 3 is rotated to Position 1 (CCW) the stored O2, N2, CH4 and CO elute and go the TCD1 detector. The analysis is complete and is ready for the next sample. APLICATION USES Application 196-A is recommended for many samples typically found in petroleum refineries. Examples are feed stock gas to reformers, cat crackers and thermal crackers. This application Also is used for light gases off the coker, flare gas, gas plant analyses and other similar samples. Consult the factory for more information.
