The document describes the USM Series ultrasonic flaw detectors from Agfa NDT. The USM 22 and USM 25 are portable ultrasonic instruments weighing only 3.5 pounds that offer high performance for non-destructive testing. They have a bright LCD screen, simple operation via two rotary knobs, and are suitable for applications like thickness measurement, lamination testing, and weld inspection. The USM 25 provides additional advanced features for more demanding jobs like dual element transducer calibration and distance-amplitude curve evaluation.

Ultrasonic Flaw Detector

State-of-the-art technologies for all requirements.

With the USM family, we have developed exceptional ultrasonic instruments that bring even more technical progress into your field testing applications. In a dialog with you as users, the instrument family has been continuously extended by new models and options. This makes a choice of flaw detectors available for the complete range of ultrasonic applications. Innovative Technology The miniaturization of the electronics has made it possible to accommodate extensive ultrasonic performance in a small package. Weighing only 3.5 pounds with Ccell batteries, the USMs provide maximum portability for comfortable testing under any conditions. State-of-the-art LCD technology will ensure that the instrument screen provides optimum readability even in direct sunlight however unfavorable the viewing angle or distance from the screen. With its refresh rate of 60 Hertz, the A-scan display is very fast. The concept simple and good! The USM 22 and USM 25 weigh little, their handling is uncomplicated, and their operation is easy to grasp. They have small dimensions, and their costs are low. Moreover, they consistently implement new ideas regarding housing design and operating concept. The basis of this concept: simplicity, and yet uncompromising performance. Three versions which one and for what? The USM 22 with its three versions is characterized by simplicity even in its function scope: USM 22B for all standard applications, USM 22L for testing on large workpieces or strongly sound-attenuating materials, and USM 22F for the fat and tissue layer measurement in fatstock breeding. In the USM 25, you will find many other functions for demanding applications. The USM 25 DAC offers more user-friendliness for the evaluation with its multiple DAC and TCG features. Apart from these, the USM 25S also offers a DGS evaluation option.

Analog feeling, digital performance.

The operating concept. This may remind you of the good old times; but of course its all high-tech behind it: two rotary knobs, perfectly familiar to many inspectors, form the basis of the operating concept and give a sort of analog feeling. These rotary knobs enable you to quickly set the instrument; the necessary functions are directly accessible. The screen. Youll brighten up when you look at this LCD screen: its bright, provides high contrast and also has a high resolution with 320 x 240 pixels. Functions and performance features: USM 22. Do you only need the basic functions for your test job as with an analog ultrasonic flaw detector for example? In that case, the USM 22 is the right instrument for you. With its large frequency range from 0.5 to 15 MHz (3 dB) and its very high measurement resolution of 0.01 mm (0.001"), it has the best ultrasonic features available. Data memory to store instrument settings and test results and an RS232 interface for data communication with printer and PC are also on board. You can print your test report as usual by simply pressing a key. Increased performance features: USM 25. The frequency range is increased to 20 MHz on the USM 25, and the range of functions is considerably extended. For example: 0.5 mm minimum calibration range for steel, two independent monitor gates with interface-echo trigger and gate magnifier, RF display mode, two-point caliThe USM25 screen in normal and zoom mode.

bration, and all functions for tests using angle-beam probes, including flaw position calculation. Plus: easy management of the data memory, namely alphanumeric designation of data sets, editable fields for further identification, and display of all data sets in a directory list. An additional interface for the output of gate alarm or trigger signal and for test data rounds off the USM 25. It gets even more user-friendly with the USM 25 DAC which offers the possibilities of generating and using distance-amplitude curves for the

evaluation of echo indications, including direct switchover as TCG. Added to this is the DGS evaluation on the USM 25S. There are 24 probes stored for the calculation of a DGS curve, with one probe being individually programmable for each data set. Plus thickness data logger. The application range is extended even further by the optional Data Logger: you can simultaneously use the USM 25 for recording and documentating thickness readings.

USM 22 and USM 25 can handle your testing requirements

For example: lamination testing and remaining wall thickness measurement USM 22B The USM 22B couldnt be better prepared both for remaining wall thickness measurements on tanks and tubes using dual-element (TR) probes and for lamination tests on metal sheets or plates. Due to the high pulse repetition frequency and the fast A-scan display, laminations or even small reflectors - e.g. pits will not be overlooked.

Crack echo from a 2.4 m (94.5) long shaft at a depth of approx. 780 mm (30.7).

Precision thickness measurement between 1st and 2nd backwall echo (1.99 mm/0.078) with the option data logger and tolerance monitor.

Pitting at a depth of 5.64 mm (0.222) on steam piping (diameter 76 mm (3), wall thickness 10 mm (0.4)

For example: large forgings USM 22L Ultrasonic testing of large workpieces is often disturbed by so-called phantom echoes that simulate flaw echoes. Apart from a high pulser capacity, a successful test requires a variable pulse repetition frequency.

For example: wall thickness measurement USM 25 with Data Logger Two gates help to carry out thickness measurements with a high accuracy using two successive backwall echoes, the minimum thickness measured is captured during scanning. Protective coatings e.g. paint does not have to be removed during this. A third gate controls the automatic A-scan freeze if required, e.g. with high-temperature measurements or spot weld testing. Optional tolerance limits can be input to monitor the current reading. If required, the corresponding A-scan is saved together with the measured value. Practical report list functions allow a quick overview of all stored data including a printout of reports. Thickness measurements can be stored in linear or grid form including an individual description of each measurement location and comments on the result.

For example: welt testing - USM 25 USM 22 and USM 25 are well-suited for weld testing. The USM 25 DAC is equipped with the necessary functions for flaw location and evaluation according to international test specifications. All flaw coordinates are displayed in the measurement line: sound path (reduced) projection distance, flaw depth. In addition, the recording threshold violation in dB above DAC is zoomed in the A-scan as required.
