I. Jesus Prays in the Garden of Gethsemane (Way of the Cross:
according to Pope John Paul II)
We adore you, o Christ, and we praise you because by your holy cross
you have redeemed the world.
Scripture:
Jesus advances a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying: "Father, if it is
possible let this cup pass from me, yet not as I will, but as you will."
Prayer:
Father in heaven, your Son, Jesus Christ consciously offered his life for
the redemption of the entire world. Strengthen us in our baptismal
resolutions by which we renounced sin, so that through the passion of this
life's sufferings we might rise to a new life of joyful service free of all
selfishness. Amen

Areading from the Second LetterofSaint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. (2 Cor7: 4-11)
Yourblessings Father
Brothers and sisters, I have great confidence in Your, I have great pride in Your; I am filled
with encouragement, I am overflowing with joy all the more because of all our affliction. For
even when we came into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were afflicted in every
wayexternal conflicts, internal fears. But God, who encourages the downcast, encouraged
us by the arrival of Titus, and not only by Your arrival but also by the encouragement with
which he was encouraged in regard to Your, as he told us of Your yearning, Your lament,
Your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more. For even if I saddened Your by my letter, I do
not regret it; and if I did regret it (for) I see that that letter saddened Your, if only for a while),
I rejoice now, not because Your were saddened, but because Your were saddened into
repentance; for Your were saddened in a godly way, so that Your did not suffer loss in
anything because of us. For godly sorrow produces a salutary repentance without regret,
but worldly sorrow produces death. For behold what earnestness this godly sorrow has
produced for Your, as well as readiness for a defense, and indignation, and fear, and
yearning, and zeal, and punishment. In every way Your have shown yourselves to be
innocent in the matter. Praise be to God always.

Gospel ) Luke 8:40-56)
When Jesus returned, the crowd
welcomed him, for they were all waiting
for him. And a man named Jairus, an
official of the synagogue, came forward.
He fell at the feet of Jesus and begged
him to come to his house, because he
had an only daughter, about twelve
years old, and she was dying. As he
went, the crowds almost crushed him.
And a woman afflicted with hemorrhages
for twelve years, who (had spent her
whole livelihood on doctors and) was
unable to be cured by anyone, came up
behind him and touched the tassel on
his cloak. Immediately her bleeding
stopped. Jesus then asked, "Who
touched me?" While all were denying it,
Peter said, "Master, the crowds are
pushing and pressing in upon you." But
Jesus said, "Someone has touched me;
for I know that power has gone out from
me." When the woman realized that she
had not escaped notice, she came
forward trembling. Falling down before
him, she explained in the presence of all
the people why she had touched him
and how she had been healed
immediately. He said to her, "Daughter,
your faith has saved you; go in peace."
While he was still speaking, someone
from the synagogue official's house
arrived and said, "Your daughter is dead;
do not trouble the teacher any longer."
On hearing this, Jesus answered him,
"Do not be afraid; just have faith and she
will be saved." When he arrived at the
house he allowed no one to enter with
him except Peter and John and James,
and the child's father and mother. All
were weeping and mourning for her,
when he said, "Do not weep any longer,
for she is not dead, but sleeping." And
they ridiculed him, because they knew
that she was dead. But he took her by
the hand and called to her, "Child, arise!"
Her breath returned and she immediately
arose. He then directed that she should
be given something to eat. Her parents
were astounded, and he instructed them
to tell no one what had happened.
This is the truth. Peace be with you.
The Gosple
The Gospel is the real antidote to spiritual destitution: wherever we go, we are
called as Christians to proclaim the liberating news that forgiveness for sins
committed is possible, that God is greater than our sinfulness, that he freely
loves us at all times and that we were made for communion and eternal life.
The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is
thrilling to experience the joy of spreading this good news, sharing the treasure
entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and
sisters experiencing darkness. It means following and imitating Jesus, who
sought out the poor and sinners as a shepherd lovingly seeks his lost sheep. In
union with Jesus, we can courageously open up new paths of evangelization
and human promotion.
Dear brothers and sisters, may this Lenten season find the whole Church ready
to bear witness to all those who live in material, moral and spiritual destitution
the Gospel message of the merciful love of God our Father, who is ready to
embrace everyone in Christ. We can so this to the extent that we imitate Christ
who became poor and enriched us by his poverty. Lent is a fitting time for self-
denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help
and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts:
no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that
costs nothing and does not hurt.
May the Holy Spirit, through whom we are as poor, yet making many rich; as
having nothing, and yet possessing everything (2 Cor 6:10), sustain us in our
resolutions and increase our concern and responsibility for human destitution,
so that we can become merciful and act with mercy. In expressing this hope, I
likewise pray that each individual member of the faithful and every Church
community will undertake a fruitful Lenten journey. I ask all of you to pray for
me. May the Lord bless you and Our Lady keep you safe.
