Bayaning 3rd World

The film "Bayaning 3rd World" attempts to answer controversies surrounding Jose Rizal's life and hero status. It focuses on whether Rizal supported revolution, his alleged retraction of writings, and the authenticity of his marriage. The film has two people travel through time to interview people close to Rizal, like his family. This new approach helped the viewer understand Rizal's humanity. While Rizal may have lost faith in the church, he did not lose faith in God. His actions show he was a good man who sacrificed for his people, which is enough to regard him as a hero.

A Reaction Paper: Jose Rizal Bayaning 3rd World

The film Bayaning 3rd World is about attempting to answer the controversies about the Filipino hero, Jose Rizal. The film revolved around three major points, Rizal's reasons for being pro or against the revolution, the Retraction System, and the authenticity of Josephine and Rizal's marriage and even the relationship, itself. The movie showed two Filipino filmmakers who were trying to answer the questions or clear the controversies about the life of Rizal through the use of what appeared to be time travelling. The two Filipino enthusiasts were visiting different eras of Rizal's life simultaneously, from visiting Doa Lolay in their house in Calamba to interrogating Josephine Bracken in Dapitan. This was how the story developed throughout the movie. The movie had an odd approach in examining Rizal's life. The filmmakers approached the different people who were important to Jose Rizal for information about him, rather than looking through all the letters that Rizal himself wrote to different associates. This new approach made me understand and appreciate Jose Rizal even more. The different stories gathered by these filmmakers through interviewing the many people that Rizal knew just made me see the other dimensions of humanity that Rizal had. It gave me a clearer picture of who Jose Rizal really is because of the information that his family and loved ones revealed to the filmmakers and us. Jose Rizal's alleged retraction came to me as a shock but then I thought this issue over; Rizal had many reasons to lose his faith in the church, an evidence of this loss of faith would be his view of the friars as the enemies. I think that Jose Rizal lost his faith on the people who were running the church but did not lose his faith in God, Himself. The truth about this controversy would be revealed, I think my respect for our national hero would still be intact. It wouldn't change anything if Rizal wore a rosary in Bagumbayan or not, or if he kissed a cross before his death or not at all. As the saying goes, "Actions speak louder than words. and Rizal's acts clearly shows that he was a good man. He had sacrificed everything and had died for the Filipino people, and for me that is more than enough as a basis if Rizal should be regarded or not. I am impassive of the alleged marriage of Rizal and Josephine. Married or not, Josephine and Rizal shared a love that was unconditional. Josephine, having a good life outside the country gave it all up just to be with Rizal, that even though Rizal was in probation for his death, she never gave space in their relationship. She was there all throughout the trial even when Rizal was killed in Bagumbayan. I think they decided to marry to make their bond official and I think they wanted to start a family. The movie, despite of the controversies, had put me in becoming more curious in the life of Rizal, though it takes a lot of effort and commitment in finding out his real life story, the question that still makes me think about if he is really deserves to be called our national hero now lingers in my curiosity.
