Drug Study (Mannitol)

Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic prescribed to reduce increased intracranial pressure as an adjunct treatment. It works by increasing the osmotic pressure of the glomerular filtrate, inhibiting water and electrolyte reabsorption. Potential side effects involve multiple body systems like confusion, tachycardia, hyperkalemia, and renal failure. Nurses monitor patients for signs of increased ICP, observe infusion sites, communicate with physicians, and educate patients on the purpose of mannitol therapy.
