Induction Heater

The document discusses an induction heater circuit. It describes different schematics that were tried, including ones using ZVS and half bridges that failed. It provides details on using the correct ferrite toroid inductor and capacitor sizes that resulted in success heating an object to glowing at 1 kW of power.

Induction heater

Index 1. Induction heater schematics 2. Working heater

1. Induction heater schematics - I tried all kinds of schematics before this, somehting with ZVS and half bridges, d make any success. The half bridge failed because i didn't fully understand the principle of induction heater. First i used wrong kind of ferrite toroid as a matching inductor, a toroid wich is not designed to handle higher frequencies. Later i di the right way with the following schematic.

I made success with this - This worked, the matching inductors were 45uH wich i measured with an inductance indicator, and the tank cap was just a small 376nF. I should had b

bigger cap, but didn't really get it that the size of the cap really matters. :S The bigger, the better, ofcourse no electrolyte caps. :D Later i found out that the best possible cap is ac designed for induction heater. Need to find out where to get one.

Not this way! - The white box is the external oscillator, but the IGBT:s are not connected correcly! Learned that later, this way they won't hold more voltage than ~100VDC.

2. Working heater - I tried all kinds of schematics before this, somehting with Z and half bridges, didn't make any success. The half bridge failed because i didn't fully understand the principle of induc heater. First i used wrong kind of ferrite toroid as a matching inductor, a toroid wich is not designed to handle highe frequencies. Later i did it the right way with the following schematic.

This is the correct way - This can hold about a megawatt.

Glowing - Heating power 1 kW, couldn't push more power into this because of wrongly connected IGBT-bricks.
