YoucanselectresourcesfromalistinmanyplacesinvCenter Operations Enterprise.Forexample,many widgetsletyouselecttheresourcestoseedatafor.Becauseanenterprisecouldeasilyhavehundredsor thousandsofresourcesdefined,vCenter Operations Enterpriseletsadministratorsassigntagstoresourcesto makeiteasiertofindtheoneyouwant. Aresourcetagisatypeofinformation,suchasApplicationorGEOLocation.Thesetwotagsalwaysexistin vCenter Operations Enterprise.Eachtaghastagvalues,whicharevaluesofthattypeofinformation.For example,theGEOLocationtagcouldhavevaluesofNewYork,London,andMumbai,ifthatswhereyour officesarelocated,whiletheapplicationtagcouldhavevaluesofaccountspayable,humanresources,andso on.Whenyouselectaresourceusingtags,youfirstselectthetag,thenaspecifictagvalue,tolisttheresources forthatvalue.Youcanthenpicktheresource(s)youwant.Thisisgenerallymuchfasterandeasierthan lookingthroughtheentireresourcelist. HowtocreateandassigntagsandtagvaluesisdescribedinthevCenterOperationsEnterpriseInstallationand AdministrationGuide. NOTEvCenter Operations Enterprisehasseveralpredefinedtags.Itautomaticallycreatesvaluesformostof thesetagsandassignsresourcestothemwhentheresourceisaddedtovCenter Operations Enterprise.For example,wheneveranadministratoraddsaresource,vCenter Operations Enterpriseassignsittothetag valuesforthecollectoritusesandthekindofresourceitis,firstcreatingthosetagvaluesiftheydonotalready exist.

Youcandefineattributeswhichareparticularlycriticaltoyourenterpriseaskeyperformanceindicators,or KPI.vCenter Operations EnterprisetreatsKPIsdifferentlythanotherattributes:thresholdviolationsbyaKPI automaticallygeneratealerts,whilesomeviolationsbynonKPIattributesdonot.
Super Metrics
Itcanbeusefultotrackcombinationsofmetrics,eitherfromasingleresourceor,morecommonly,from multipleresources.InvCenter Operations Enterprise,youcancombinedifferentmetricsusingmathematical operationstodefineasupermetric,whichvCenter Operations Enterprisethentrackslikeanyothermetric. Thresholds
vCenter Operations Enterpriseusestwotypesofmetricthresholds,hardanddynamic:
Ahardthresholdisavalueanadministratordefinesforametric.Ahardthresholdisstatic;itchangesonly ifanadministratorchangesit. AdynamicthresholdisdefinedbyvCenter Operations Enterprisebasedontheincomingandhistorical metricdata.vCenter Operations Enterpriseadjustsdynamicthresholdsasnewdataallowittobetter definewhatisnormalforametricandwhatisnt.Dynamicthresholdsautomatethemassivemanual effortthatcouldbeneededwithhardthresholds,whereyoumightneedtoconfigurethresholdsfor hundredsorthousandsofmetrics. DynamicthresholdsaddcontextthathelpsvCenter Operations Enterprisediscriminatebetweennormal andabnormalbehavior.TheyenablevCenter Operations EnterprisetoevaluatetheperformanceofIT componentsincontextwithhistoricalconditionsanddetermineifananomalyistrulywarranted.By determiningwhatisnormalintheenvironment,vCenter Operations Enterprisecanfilteroutalertsthat areassociatedwithnormalbehaviorthealertsthatwouldbetriggeredbyhardthresholdsandinstead generatealertsonlyforabnormalbehaviorsthatareprecursorstorealproblemsinyourenvironment.
Root Causes
Therootcauseofanalertisthecondition,orsymptom,thatwasthefirststepinthechainofeventsthatledto thealert.Forexample,aslowdowninnetworktrafficthroughaparticularroutercouldleadtoanincreased timepertransactionforusersofyourWebsite,whichinturnleadstoanalertbeingissuedfortheWebserver resource. Foranyalert,youcanseealistoftheconditionsvCenter Operations Enterprisecalculatesasthemostlikely rootcausesofthesymptomthatcausedthealert,rankedinorder.Youcanlistrootcauseseitherona dashboardintheRootCauseRankingwidget,orfromtheAlertsOverviewpage.

Thehealthratinggivesyouaquickoverviewofthecurrentstateofanyresource,fromanindividualoperation uptoyourentireenterprise.vCenter Operations Enterprisecalculateshealthbylookingattheinternally metricsfortheresourceandusingitsproprietaryanalyticsformulastodetermineanoverallhealthscore,from 0to100. NOTEInternallygeneratedmetricsaremetricsthatvCenter Operations Enterprisegeneratesandstores automaticallyforeveryresource:thetotalnumberofalertsandanomalies,thenumberofactivealerts,andso on.Theyaregenerallyusedonlyforcalculatingthehealthscore. vCenter Operations Enterpriseindicateshealthintwoways:thenumericscore,oracoloredindicatorbased ontherangeofthehealthscore:

Blue:Nodataisavailableforanymetricsforthisresource.Thisshowsasaquestionmarkonpageswhere thenumericscoreisshown,andas1onhistorichealthgraphs. NOTEAbluehealthindicatormeansthatvCenter Operations Enterprisedoesnotknowthehealthofthe resource.Itisnotthesameasa0healthscore.A0healthscoreindicatesthat vCenter Operations Enterprisehasreceivedinformationfromtheadapterinstanceindicatingthatthe resourceisdown.Ablue(1)scoremeansthatvCenter Operations Enterpriseisnotreceivingdata.This couldindicatethatmetricsarenotbeingcollectedfortheresourceorthattheresourcecacheisbeing reloaded.ThecacheisreloadedwheneverthevCenter Operations Enterpriseservicesarerestartedorif thereareconfigurationchangestotheresourceoritsparent. ThefeaturesontheForensicsmenuletyoulookatacrosssiloanalysisofresourceanomalies,topnanalysis ofthebehaviorofselectedresourcesormetrics,orthefingerprintlibraryofvCenter Operations Enterprise. YoucangetmoreinformationonthesefeaturesinChapter 5.
Cross-Silo Analysis
TheCrossSiloAnalysispagedisplaysoneormoregraphsshowingthenumberofanomaliesovertimefor particularresources.Youcanzoomthegraphtofocusonanydesiredperiodoftime,suchasjustbeforea particularalertwasissued.Youcanclickatanypointinthegraphtoseearankingofthelikelyrootcausesfor theanomaliesatthatpoint.Forapplications,theanomalygraphalsoincludesalineshowingtheinternally determined90%threshold.Ifthenumberofanomaliesexceedsthisthreshold,itgeneratesanearlywarning SmartAlert,asthereisastrongprobabilitythatthereisaproblemwiththeapplication.
Top-N Analysis
TheTopNAnalysispageshowsyouthetopresources,metrics,oralertsinoneormorecategoriesyouselect. Forexample,youcanseethefivemostorleasthealthyresourcesinatier.Youcanselecttheresourcetagand timeframetoanalyzeandthecategoriestoshow. Fingerprints
WhenaKPIforanapplicationoratierbelongingtoanapplicationviolatesathreshold, vCenter Operations Enterpriseexaminestheeventsleadinguptotheviolation.Ifitfindsenoughrelated information(suchasotheranomalies),itcapturesthesetofeventswhichprecededandleduptotheviolation. Thiscapturedseriesofeventsiscalledafingerprint.vCenter Operations Enterprisecanthenmonitorevents inthefuture,and,ifitfindsasimilarseriesofevents,issueapredictivealertwarningthattheKPIviolationis likelytooccur. Fingerprintingcapturesmodelsofproblemsyoucanusefordetailedforensics.Thishelpsyouidentify problemsandresolvethemmorequicklythaninatraditionalITenvironmentby:

Capacity Analysis
Somemetrics,suchasdiskspaceusageornetworktrafficmeasurements,frequentlyshowlongterm trendstheytendtoeitherriseorfallovertime,thoughshorttermfluctuationscanhidethisormakeit difficulttocalculate.Thecapacityanalysislooksattheoverallvaluetrendforaselectedmetricandtellsyou whenitispredictedtoreachathresholdyousetandhowconfidentvCenter Operations Enterpriseisofthe prediction.Thiscanhelpwithplanningforinfrastructureupgrades,suchasaddingadditionalstorage capacity,networkrouters,andsoon.

Thismeansthatnotallanomaliestriggeralerts.Asinglemetricgoingaboveorbelowitsthresholdgenerates analertmessageonlyifthatmetricisdefinedasaKPI.Ifitisnot,vCenter Operations Enterprisecontinuesto trackit,andgeneratesanalertonlyifacombinationofcorrelatedmetricssignalsaprobableproblem.Thiscan greatlyreducethenumberoffalsealertswhichcantakeupvaluabletimeandresources. NOTEFormetricswithdynamicthresholds,thecalculationtodeterminewhethertogenerateananomalyis actuallysomewhatmorecomplicatedthandescribedhere.Basedonhowoften,historically,themetrichas violateditsthresholdsandbyhowmuch,vCenter Operations Enterprisecalculatesandcontinuallyadjustsa degreeofabnormalityforthemetric.Ifthemetricvalueiswithinthisdegreeofabnormality,noanomalyis generatedevenifthevalueisoutsidethedynamicthreshold.

About Alerts
AlertsarethemechanismsvCenter Operations Enterpriseusestonotifyyouofabnormalbehavior. Thereareseveraltypesofalerts,eachofwhichhasitsowntriggersandcontents.Analertmaybegenerated byabnormalbehaviorofoneormoremetricsforanyresource,includingatierorapplication,orwhena fingerprintpredictsanupcomingproblem.vCenter Operations Enterprisedeterminesthetypeofalerttosend basedonwhattriggersit. AmajorbenefitofalertprocessinginvCenter Operations EnterpriseisthatvCenter Operations Enterprisecan significantlyreducethetotalvolumeofalertsbecauseitsendsanalertonlywhenitsanalyticalgorithms indicatethereistrulyanimpendingproblem.
