Step One: Pre Press Production

Step One outlines the pre-press production process which involves converting digital files to film negatives that are used to create printing plates through a light-exposure chemical reaction, with different plate materials like aluminum producing the best quality. Each primary color has a separate plate. Pre-Press involves all processes between layout creation and final printing, including plate manufacturing, image formatting, typesetting, copy-editing, proofreading and selecting proper paper. Screening, imposition, separation and manufacturing must be carefully planned. The work flows and responsibilities for each pre-press task can vary depending on the printing process, product and technologies used, requiring flexible management.

Step One : Pre Press Production

Before the job can be printed , the document must be converted to film and plate. In the case of Ho Stuff !or"s #$press, film ne%atives are created from di%ital files. Ima%es from the ne%atives are transfered to printin% plates in much the same a& as photo%raphs are developed. ' measured amount of the li%ht is allo ed to pass throu%h the film ne%atives to e$pose to li%ht, a chemical reaction occurs that allo s an in"( receptive coatin% to be activated. )his results in the transfer of the ima%e from the netive to the plate. )here are different materials for plates, includin% paper * hich produces a lo er +ualit& product,. )he best plate material is alumunium, hich is more costl&. #ach of the primar& colors-blac",c&an,ma%enta and &ello -has a separated plate. #ven thou%h &ou see man&, man& colours in the finished product, onl& these four colour are used *&ou.ll also hear this called the four(color printin% process /it.s a little li"e the three( color process used in television,.

Pre Press is the term used in the printin% and publishin% industries for the processes and procedures thet occur bet een the creation of a print la&out and the final printin%. )he prepress procedures includes the manufacture of a printin% plate, ima%e carrier or form, read& for mountin% on a printin% press, as ell as the adjusment of ima%es and te$ts or the creation of a hi%h(+ualit& print file. In toda&.s prepress shop, the form of deliver& from the customer is usuall& electronic, either a P12 or application files created from such pro%rams as Scribus, 'dobe In1esi%n or 3uar"4Press.

Pre Press Processes

5.)&pesettin% : involves the presentation of te$tual material in %raphic form on paper or some other medium. Before the advent of des"top publishin%. )&pesettin% of printed material as produced in print shops b& compositors or t&pesetters or"in% b& hand, and later ith machines. 6.7op&(editin% : is the or" that an editor does to improve the formattin%, st&le, and accurac& of a manuscript. 7op& editin% is done prior to the or" of proofreaders, ho handle documents before final publication. 8.9ar"up : is an artificial lan%ua%e usin% a set of annotations to the te$t that %ive instruction re%ardin% the structure of the te$t or ho it is to be displa&ed. 9ar"up lan%ua%es have been in use for centuries, and in recent &ears have also been used computer t&pesettin% and ord processin% s&stems. :.Proofin% : involves creatin% an accurate facsimile of the art or" before be%innin% productions runs. )his serves as a bond bet een the printer an their customer that the final product meets an a%reed upon standard. Proofs in %eneral can be done for all parts * ima%es, illustration, te$ts, and colors, of print product. In this part, three t&pes of proofin% should be chec"ed and printed out : the print / read& P12 files, the printers proof and the imposition proof. Print / read& P12 files should be made after the la&out usin% prefli%ht at the

printn% house. )he printers proof should be printed out in hi%h resolution and chec"ed b& the customer. )he imposition proof, hich is usuall& done b& the printers, should also be printed out to chec" and adjust the printin% press. ;.Proofreadin% : traditionall& means readin% a proof cop& of a te$t n order to detect an correct an& errors. 9odern proofreadn% often re+uaires readin% cop& at earlier sta%es as ell. <.Screenin% : adjustment of a continous tone of ima%es such as photo%raphs. =.Imposition : the combination of man& pa%es into a sin%le si%nature form. >.Separation : specif&in% ima%es or te$t to be put on plates appl&in% individual printin% media *in"s, varnishes, etc, to a common print. ?.9anufacturin% : the usa%e of different materials of plates should meet the needs of printin% method. @suall& rubber, plastic and aluminum are used for plates as ell as film hich is the photomechanical e$posure and processin% of li%ht / sensitive emulsion on a printin% plate. 9anufacturin% of plates should be ell planned and delivered beforehand. 'lso , the cost should be calculated as ell. 5A.9anufacturin% of hi%h +ualit& : print P12 file, is used for the final printin%. hich

55.Paper Select : choosin% a proper paper is also a ver& important step in prepress. In most modern publishin% environments, the tas"s related to connect %eneration

and refinement are carried aout separatel& from other prepress tas", and are commonl& characteriBed as part of %rapich desi%n. Some companies combine the roles of %raphic desi%n and prepress production into des"top publishin% usuall& called 1)

)he set of procedures used in an& particular prepress environment is "no n as a or"flo s ver&, dependin% on the printin% process *e.% letterpress, offset, di%ital printin%, screen printin%, , the final product *boo"s, ne spapers, product pac"a%in%, , and the implementation of specific prepress technolo%ies. 2or e$ample, it is not uncommon to use a computer and ima%e / setter to %enerate film hich is then stripped and used to e$posed the plate in a vacuum frame C this or"flo is h&brid because separation and halftonin% are carried out via di%ital processes hile the e$posure of the plate is an analo% one. )hat demonstrates that the borders around the prepress are ver& fluid. 2urthermore / dependin% on the printin% method and the print product elements of the prepress of %raphic print production can differ from case to case. )his circumstance re+uires a mana%ement of the or"flo . It is necessar& to mana%e the responsibilit& for each part of the or"flo . )hat can mean that emplo&ees, ho are actuall& responsible for other parts of the production , &ou have to attend to parts of the prepress.
