Reflective Paper
I first encountered autism when I learned that my uncle was diagnosed with it. There are
many types of autism, but he has the most common type of autism with mild retardation.
Considering that my uncle is younger than me, I do not think that he is able to understand his
condition. However, he represents something different in my life, a person that the average
person wouldn’t understand, nor even accept in our society because of his intellectual disability. I
am majoring in Elementary Education as well as Special Education so this topic that I chose is
huge for my field of study. I am aware that autism is a condition that is quickly increasing in
today’s society; hence I would like to further extend my knowledge on the general concept of
autism, such things include: the origin of autism, the symptoms of autism, and if there is a cure
for autism. I also want to look into Obama’s Health Plan to learn if there will be any benefits for
persons with autism and if so, what are they?
From my own observations, I have come somewhat familiar with a few symptoms of
autism. Common symptoms of autism that I have observed include poor behavioral signs, such
as poor use of eye gazing, poor use of gestures, sensitivity to loud noises, and lack of
relationships; impairment in verbal and nonverbal communication, such as impairment in being
social and interacting with others; and repetitive or stereotyped movements, for example my
uncle’s hand flapping. Although I have observed these unusual patterns, my knowledge of
autism is still very little, but I would like to learn more about this condition.
Before I looked at a few sites, I first wanted to break down the main question, what is
autism? According to The American Heritage Dictionary, ‘Autism is a condition disturbing
perceptions and relationships in psychological development in which use of language, reaction to
stimuli, interpretation of the world, and the formation of relationships are not fully established
and follow unusual patterns”. In doing more research I have come across many web sites with
plenty of information which answer most, if not, all of my questions that I wanted to understand.
These sites include the Health Base as well as the last two health related sites on the HCIP page.
I believe these will provide me with the information that I seek for. I believe it will be a very
interesting topic of discussion. To finish my reflection, I found a quote from The Importance of
Intervention for Autism, which I think represents the way that people should regard persons with
autism, “It is important to remember that people with autism are still individuals. Though they
may not always act in the expected way or comprehend every social situation, as with all
individuals, they each have their own strengths and challenges, and seek to be accepted and
understood.”
