Textual Analysis

The document provides a textual analysis of the representation of the antagonist in the films Skyfall and Avengers. It analyzes opening scenes from each film that introduce the protagonist. For Skyfall, James Bond is depicted as mysterious and powerful through lighting, costume, and music. His straight facial expression leaves his intentions unclear. Iron Man is shown as confident, wealthy, and dominant based on his armor costume, the machine that removes it, and his dialogue as a boss. Both protagonists exhibit conventional traits through visual and audio elements that establish them as heroes.

A textual Analysis of the representation of the Antagonist in Skyfall(Sam Mendes 2010 UK) and Avengers (Joss Whedon 2010 USA) The two films that I will be analysing are Skyfall (Sam Mendes 2010 UK), and Avengers (Joss Whedon). The film directed by Sam Mendes Skyfall, is an action/ adventure/thriller genre. The studio, which was used to shoot this film, was Eon Production. The cast of this movie consists of Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomi Harris, and Berenice Marlohe, Albert Finney and Judi Dench. The narrative theory, which applies to Skyfall is Levi Strauss, this is because it is a binary opposition between Good vs. Evil, Protagonist vs. Antagonist. This is because this film is a conventional action movie. Roland Barthe is another narrative theory which is applied to Skyfall in the Enigma code as the film leaves the audience guessing to what is going to happen next. This builds up the scene, and this way the audience are eager to know, it creates a mystery in the film, and especially in the scene that I will analyse. The messages and values which this film portrays is that the Good always prevails, in this case the Antagonist will win at the end of the movie, and he will defeat the protagonist. For example in the previous James Bond movies, the protagonist always overcome the Antagonist however complicated it may be. Avengers directed by Joss Whedon 2010 United States, is an Action/ Fantasy. This is an American film, directed by an American director; the story is by an American person called Zak Penn. This film predominantly stars American actors such as Robert Downing Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffolo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddleston playing the main roles in the movie. The narrative theory which supports the representation of the Antagonist in Avengers is, Levi Strauss and Roland Barthe- Enigma Code. Enigma Code shows the audience the tension which is built up and it leaves them guessing what happens next. The Levi-Strauss narrative theory follows the binary opposition such as Good vs. Evil, Protagonist vs. Antagonist, and in some areas Human vs. Alien, this is towards the end of the film. The messages and values which this film shows is that Good prevails at the end after hard work. This means that the Antagonist in the movie will succeed in what he has set out to achieve. For example this is a fantasy/action movie; the superheroes will use their powers to prevail at the end of the movie. The first Skyfall scene that I will be analysing is when the protagonist; James Bond enters in a corridor with a gun in his hand. This is the opening scene of the movie where they present the protagonist first. The first shot of the scene is a wide shot which lets us see the whole character however the scene is blurry so we are not able to see who is in the scene. The

character looks confident with the use of his body language, as he is looking straight at the camera. This gives us an impression that he is a protagonist as he is not scared this is through the use of mise en scene. In the first scene we can see that James bond is confident as he is standing up straight and looking into the camera, which makes the audience feel as if the character is looking straight at them. The costume worn by the protagonist represents his professionalism. The costume is a full three-piece suit with a tie and a napkin at the left side pocket of his blazer. The costume represents confidence through the sophistication associated with the three-piece suit. Another element from the mise en scene is the lighting of the scene. When James Bond enters into the scene, we see that the lighting is dark; in this case we cannot see who has come in. This represents the protagonist as a mysterious person not wanting to be identified. We can link this to Roland Barthes enigma code. Another mise en scene element is facial expressions. When the protagonist comes close to the camera we see a close up shot, this lets us see the expressions of the protagonist where it shows that he has a straight face, He could lack emotions or he could be masculine, this can link to the mystery as the audience are unaware of whats about to happen, and his facial expression dont give anything away. The sound that is played represents James Bond as a protagonist. Nondiegetic orchestral music is played with a heavy base and a loud tone. This illustrates that James Bond is powerful. The sound also represents James as confident. The heavy element of the base connotes James bonds power. The ideas that we get from the mise en scene about the protagonist is that he is powerful and confident by the use of body language and facial expressions. This is a conventional representation of a protagonist as the audience views the protagonist in films as a selfless person. From the ideas we get from this scene about the protagonist is that James Bond is a mysterious person. This is presented to us by the cinematography used such as the use of wide shot to show his body language and the environment that he is in. Then the use of close up shot shows us his facial expression, which is a straight face, this shows us that he is not afraid. The first scene that I will be analysing from the movie Avengers is when Iron Man is walking out from his body suit which he has created. The first camera shot is a wide shot, this shot shows the audience the whole character clearly and we are also able to see the area that this scene is taking place. We can see the background of the character to know where

he is. The body language of Iron Man represents he is confident and powerful. This is shown by him walking straight to the camera with his face up and his back straight. This shows the audience that he is the protagonist by the body language because of the way that he is walking towards the camera. The costume worn by Iron man is a metal suit which he has created to present himself to the audience. He is recognised as Iron Man when he wears the armour; otherwise no one knows who is underneath the suit. The costume that he is wearing represents the character to be rich and professional. The reason that the costume represents him as rich is because he needed to have money to be able to create the costume, and the way that the costume is taken apart is by the help of a machine created by the protagonist. Another mise en scene element which is used in the scene I am analysing is props, for example the machine which taken the body suit of Iron Man, the protagonist of the movie. This prop represents the character as rich and powerful. This is because the machine that Iron Man has created helps him take his suit of. He is shown to be powerful because he is on a building which is located next to the Empire state building in the City of New York. This shows that this movie was created in America. Another mise en scene element would be facial expressions. This is shown in a close up shot when the machine is taking the mask of Tony Stark known as Iron Mans face. This scene shows him talking to his partner, in this part of the scene the expression on his face shows him have an expected face. The expected face shows that the is aware of his surroundings which he is at. He does not lack emotions such as James Bond lacked in the first scene that I analysed in the first movie. This character explores different emotions which are expressed on his face by the use of facial expressions. Tony Stark is mostly happy when he is beside his partner. The scene which I am analysing shows Tony Speaking to his partner therefore he is happy. The reason that he is pleasant is to do with the task that he done before landing on his building named STARK. The happiness represents as a playful person to be around, and seems to be a conventional protagonist that we expect such as being approachable, Brave, Fearless and Verisimilitude. The sound which is played is the noise that the machine makes when it is taking the suit of Tony. So this sound represents the richness of the protagonist as he is able to create and use a machine which takes suit of rather than Tony having to do it. The sound which is heard in this scene is the machine making the conventional sound when the hands of the machine are moving. Nothing is different regarding the sound. Although diegetic sound regarding the dialogues are being heard. This is when Tony is speaking with his worker over Bluetooth. The sound that we are

hearing tells us that Tony has power as he is Sir this means people work under him. This tells us he is a dominant person and he does not like to take no for an answer. The ideas which are portrayed to us by the use of the mise en scene is that Tony has a powerful, wealthy and dominant nature. This is presented to us by the body language and facial expression which we see in the scene. This is a conventional representation of a protagonist as we the audience view the protagonist in the film to be a nice and approachable person who people can come and tell their trouble to. In the scene which I am analysing he is presented to be the conventional protagonist that we want to see. Through the use of cinematography we see two different camera shots which is a wide and close up shot. These shots are used to show the audience the surrounding that the character is in, so that the audience get a feel as if they can relate to the scene in some ways. The use of close up shot lets us see the details of taking the mask of Tonys face and we get to see the expression he is expressing. Also we are able to see how he is talking to someone. Overall both films convey representation towards the protagonist Both the films that I am analysing are a conventional action movies that we want to see. With reference to the micro elements which are used in scenes tell us that these protagonists are our conventional protagonist. For example through mise en scene we see that the costume that Tony is wearing in Avengers shows that he is rich, power and dominant person. This is because he has created the costume, and rather taking it of himself, a machine is created to do this job. Another scene from the film which represents the protagonist as rich and powerful is when he is with his Partner and a worker comes into room with the use of a lift. He then offers then wine, this shows that the protagonist is a sophisticated person and is also professional. The task that the person has brought is in a leather folder, this represents professionalism by the worker and the protagonist. In Skyfall Sam Mendes represents the protagonist as a serious person who is here to do his job, he does not fit in the category of a conventional protagonist as he lacks emotions. However, both the films regularly present the idea of representation of the protagonist by capturing the scenes where they are represented as a conventional protagonist. This is when they are fighting with the villains (equilibrium) to when they start losing the fight scenes(disequilibrium), then to when they win the fight and the movie ends with a happy notes (to Equilibrium coming back again). The main representation of the protagonist that both the films try to convey to the audience is that that Good always Prevails.
