When operating and maintaining the highly automated terminals of today, where any minute of downtime could prove costly, it is essential to have powerful control and management systems. With the SICMA system, we have been able to ensure this for ten years now - and very successfully. Starting with stand-alone SICMA solutions on automated systems, such as cranes, stackers / reclaimers, conveyor systems and RTGs, we developed the SICMA system to a scale enabling the overall control and management of entire terminals. Amidst the wealth of high-tech options, it is easy to lose track of the main benefit of using SICMA: Thanks to accurate and fast fault reporting, online status information, automatically triggered maintenance warnings and documentation available online, it is possible to drastically reduce any (unexpected) downtimes of equipment. Maintenance engineers can trace the faulty equipment within seconds. And because they know immediately what to do, they can take the right tools and/or spare parts with them straight away. With all these features, we are perfectly equipped to meet all the needs of the next century in the field of terminals. It goes without saying that an advanced security system has been integrated to prevent unauthorized access. Because full internet support is integrated, SICMA online information can be obtained on all PCs connected to the plant network and even worldwide via the internet. You can therefore use SICMA to manage your production systems in other parts of the world without any difficulty at all.

The SICMA hardware concept

SICMA is designed to run on standard PCs with communication link(s) to the automation controller(s) on the equipment. With small configurations, SICMA can be set up to run as a standalone system with full functionality. If connected to the local network, these local PCs can act as data servers for remote PCs. With medium or large-scale configurations, a SICMA server is installed. All equipment controllers will have a communication link to this server system. This may also be wireless links. The SICMA server holds all historical data and online documentation, coordinating all requests for online process data from the SICMA view stations. It also acts as an intranet/internet web server making it possible to view SICMA data on ordinary office PCs or handheld devices running Windows CE. Communication between SICMA PCs is based on the TCP/IP protocol. For communication with the equipment automation controllers, several communication drivers are available.

The SICMA software concept

Software concept The SICMA system is designed to run on the Windows platform. Depending on the configuration this can be Windows 95/982000/XP and Windows CE for the handheld devices. The heart of the SICMA system is formed by several components that closely cooperate together. The SICMA Manager controls the historical data acquisition and makes the overall coordination between the systems The Database server (Sybase, Oracle, Microsoft SQLserver) holds all the relevant data. The WinCC data server collects and visualizes the online data for the process graphics The OPC data server communicates with the process control systems. The functionality of the SICMA system is designed in modules each performing a dedicated task. Depending on the requested functionality, modules are activated. In the screens however, all-available data can be mixed. On the equipment (crane, RTG, etc.) the presentation of all information is done with the Siemens WinCC system. The data presented can be purely local data of the equipment itself (stand-alone system), or a mix of local data and additional information retrieved via the fixed or wireless network. On a central level we have designed a new Outlookstyle user-interface where all information is structured in a way that the user always has a clear overview of the total installation. Even when the user accesses into detailed information about a specific item, there are still areas on the screen showing the overall status. The SICMA modules Because of its modular design, SICMA is remarkably flexible. Individual wishes and special requirements onsite can be integrated into the overall system without difficulty. Up to twenty general and/or sector-specific function modules are already available to assist users, who may have diverse requirements: Operation levels with modules such as Fault, Online Cameras and Online Process Graphics. Maintenance levels with modules such as Service Maintenance, Trace, Monitoring Drive Systems, S5/S7 Programming. Management levels with modules such as Operation Data and sophisticated report facilities. Intranet or internet users can easily access all SICMA data via HTML pages.

SIMATIC Programming

A brief overview of some of the SICMA modules available follows below

Fault Diagnostics Module This module controls recognition and handling of faults that arise while the system is in operation. Particularly noteworthy is the strict separation of stored messages (alarms, operating statuses, etc.) according to recording time. In addition to dealing with faults, operators can correct faults by drawing on their own knowledge of the equipment filed in a user notebook, sorted by location, possible causes and correction. Reference links to manuals, drawings, internet sites, etc. support operators online with relevant information, thus avoiding time-consuming searches. On the central level the tree-view of all equipment directly shows the actual status of all nodes independently of the selected work area. The bottom part of the screen gives a detailed overview of all outstanding messages. Service Maintenance Module: Due to the use of intelligent devices preventive maintenance will be triggered more and more by the equipment itself rather than scheduled by (static) working hour schedules. With the aid of the service maintenance module preventive maintenance schedules in combination with the intelligent device status, the maintenance staff can effectively plan their working schedules. Because the data of the service maintenance module is also available on wireless connected handheld devices (PDA, TabletPC) time consuming administrative paperwork will be eliminated because information is available at the working location and data entry is done directly into the maintenance system. Operation Data Module This module displays equipment-operating data in text and graphical form. As the data structure can be individually defined, for instance in relation to the turnaround cycle, it is possible to estimate the loading capacity and service life of the crane. Important features of the module are its reporting and statistical evaluation facilities. In addition to standard evaluation routines, individual data evaluation formats can be designed at will. Trace Module This module contains the time trend analysis and stores process signals triggered by certain events in the system. Process signals are transmitted to the module through high performance ring buffers. Using the SICMA database, the stored signals can be processed as required. With the online trend function a selection of all available data addresses can be recorded and saved for longer periods eliminating the need for installing external data addresses recorders. Container-Positioning Module This module makes it possible to increase the automation level of the crane. Together with the HIPAC swaycontrol system, containers can be loaded or offloaded in an automatic sequence. All relevant data, such as vessel layout and load plan, is available in the SICMA database and communicated via the yard planning system. An online status display of the status and next planned operation is available in the operator cabin. Condition Monitoring With the Siemens WinCC system software online process graphics can be easily designed to supervise and control the equipment. Because of the integrated web-server, the graphics can be monitored via the intranet/internet, and on wireless connected hand-held devices.

Video Control Module The video control module supports the real-time monitoring of critical or otherwise inaccessible system areas. Cameras can be connected directly to a PC, with additional cameras connected externally. Overall camera control takes place using the mouse. Using the teaching mode in the module, motorized camera positions can be adapted to local conditions and results stored for later use. When a specific condition is repeated, the camera will automatically return to the stored position. Online Information Module The SICMA online information module makes all kinds of digital information available via the internet browser. Electrical, mechanical and hydraulic diagrams are provided in software form. Users can retrieve directly from other SICMA modules the requested electrical drawing, showing the faulty device user manuals, internet sites, etc. Because it is possible to retrieve information from the internet sites of different manufacturers, users always have the most up-to-date information at their fingertips.

SIMATIC Programming Module With the S5/S7 for Windows software integrated into this module, SIMATIC PLC software can be displayed and edited via SICMA, thus avoiding the need for a separate programming unit. Fault messages can be projected directly onto the SIMATIC section and, if networked, fault diagnostics can be initiated directly from the central console.
