Addition, Subtraction and
Multiplication of Decimals
Addition of decimals
To add decimals
arrange the decimals with digits in the same place value vertically
aligned
add up digits in the same place value, beginning with digits in the
rightmost place value and progressing to the left
1 1 2
Example: 70.46 + 5.85 + 24.39 7 0 . 4 6
5 . 8 5 +
24.39
1 0 0 . 7 0
Subtraction of decimals
The subtraction of decimals involve the same steps as the addition
of decimals, except that instead of adding, you subtract the digits.
4 16 1 13
Example: 56.23 48.17 5 6 . 2 3
48.17
8 . 0 6
Multiplication of decimals
The multiplication of decimals is done in the same way as the
multiplication of whole numbers, except for the placing of the
decimal point in the product.
