JOB DESCRIPTION
Essential and Important Duties: 1. Supervises, coaches, trains and evaluates the work of assigned library staff. 2. Collaborates with the director, business manager, and other staff to conduct the day-to-day operations of the library. 3. Collects timesheets, monitor vacation and sick leave and send timesheets to director. 4. Oversees all aspects of circulation services, including checking materials in and out; shelving materials, and registering and assisting patrons. 5. Assists patrons in resolving issues related to their library account. 6. Informs, maintains and suggests library procedures and policies. 7. Develops the collection by acquiring materials based on the assessment of information and enrichment needs of the community. 8. Utilizes material reviews in peer reviewed journals and on well-established websites in the selecting materials. 9. Makes the best of available funds when selecting materials. 10. Weeds and rotates the collection as needed. 11. Assists patrons with reference services and in locating appropriate materials. 12. Performs readers advisory services. 13. Plans, promotes, and conducts useful, timely programs. 14. Oversees all programming and outreach. 15. Promotes the library within the community and beyond. 16. Proof reads and approves all signs for public display and press releases. 17. Conducts yearly or semiannual staff evaluations and document relevant information for staff personnel files. 18. Prepares and maintains reports, surveys, and library statistics as requested by director. 19. Opens and closes the library, reports to work on time, maintains an appropriate work schedule and checks the building before leaving. 20. Manages the facility to assure it is well maintained and clean. 21. Creates and manages a circulation desk schedule. 22. Supervises and assists in the shelving and organizing of library materials. 23. Preserves a positive attitude and fosters a positive and healthy work environment. 24. Maintains confidentiality. 25. Creates a quarterly newsletter and other publications for the dissemination of information about the library and its programs. 26. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of library management. 2. Advanced knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Halifax County South Boston Regional Library System and the ability to interpret them to the staff and the public. 3. Ability to act as a representative of the library to the public. 4. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records. 5. Ability to keep all relevant parties informed of all major issues and programs and to recommend changes as appropriate. 6. Ability to supervise, plan, and coordinate the work of diverse staff in order to accomplish library goals and objectives. 7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other professionals and the general public. 8. Knowledge of electronic resources, including the Internet and database information retrieval; 9. Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and office machines.
Education and Experience: 1. 2. 3. Bachelors degree required; MLS/MLIS degree preferred; 2 3 years related library experience; Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.
Special Requirements and Related Obligations: Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Physical and Environmental Conditions: Work requires light physical effort in the handling of light materials in non-strenuous work positions up to 30 pounds and/or continual standing or walking of 60%+ of the time. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meetings and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions.
