CenPEEP - Centre For Power Efficiency & Environmental Protection

The Centre for Power Efficiency & Environmental Protection (CenPEEP) was established by NTPC in collaboration with USAID to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Indian thermal power plants. CenPEEP functions as a resource center that demonstrates and disseminates state-of-the-art technologies and practices to improve the performance of coal-fired power plants across India. Through its Comprehensive Performance Optimization Programme, CenPEEP has successfully balanced reducing carbon dioxide emissions with increasing power generation efficiency. CenPEEP has demonstrated performance assessment techniques at several NTPC and state utility stations, identifying heat rate improvement potential. Its efforts have avoided over 29 million tons of cumulative CO2 emissions from NTPC plants alone.

N T P C es tablis hed C entre for P ower E ffic ienc y & E nvironmental P rotec tion (C enP E E P ) in c ollaboration with U SA I D with a mandate to reduc e G H G emis s ions per unit of elec tric ity generated by improving the overall performanc e of c oal- fired power plants . T he c entre func tions as a res ourc e c entre for ac quis ition, demons tration and dis s emination of s tate- of- the- art tec hnologies and prac tic es for performanc e improvement of c oal fired power plants for the entire power s ec tor of I ndia.
Win-win Approach for Global Climate Change

N T P C has adopted a win- win s trategy at C enP E E P by ac hieving s ynergy between environmental c onc erns and utility needs . We have initiated the C omprehens ive P erformanc e O ptimis ation P rogramme thereby s uc c es s fully balanc ing the dual objec tives of reduc ing c arbon- di- oxide emis s ions that c ontribute to c limate c hange and fac ilitating higher effic ienc y of power generation.

U nder N T P C s effort for betterment of I ndian P ower Sec tor, C enP E E P is als o as s is ting various s tate elec tric ity utilities in I ndia by demons tration and dis s emination of improved tec hnologies and prac tic es . T o inc reas e outreac h to SE Bs , 2 regional c entres of C enP E E P have als o been es tablis hed in the N orthern Region (L uc know) and E as tern Region (P atna).T his approac h has brought s ignific ant benefits to the power plants and helped in the reduc tion of emis s ions .

Technological Interventions

For greater ac c eptability and as s imilation of ec o- friendly tec hnologies and prac tic es , methodology of T ec hnology A c quis ition, D emons tration and D is s emination has been adopted. Impact

C enP E E P has demons trated performanc e as s es s ment tec hniques at s everal N T P C and 1 4 State U tilities s tations . T he tes ts have demons trated heat rate improvement potential even in the bes t run power s tations . M any demons trated tec hniques and prac tic es have been adopted by the s tations . I n N T P C alone, over 2 9 million tones of c umulative C O 2 has been avoided s inc e inc eption of C enP E E P ac tivities . Some of the s tate utilities have ac knowledged C enP E E P s s upport in reduc ing their emis s ions by over 5 .8 million tones in a year. Some utilities have ac knowledged C enP E E P c ontribution to their effic ienc y improvement in s ubmis s ions before regulators . I n effec t, it is the larges t G H G emis s ion reduc tion effort in power utilities in I ndia. C enP E P has developed H eat Rate I mprovement G uidelines jointly with T V A and c irc ulated it to all the c oal fired power s tations in I ndia. I t regularly publis hes P erformanc e O ptimis er, a brief on optimis ation experienc es . T he c entre als o organis es works hops / training programmes to train power s ec tor profes s ionals .

Participant in Asia Pacific Partnership(APP) on Clean Development and Climate

T he M inis try of P ower (G overnment of I ndia) and C entral E lec tric ity A uthority (C E A ) have rec ognis ed N T P C /C enP E E P as an important agenc y involved in G H G reduc tion efforts and the s uc c es s ac hieved in this area and have entrus ted C enP E E P with tec hnology demons tration ac tivites in I ndian U tilities under A P P multilateral program. T hrough demons tration of performanc e as s es s ment tec hnologies in 3 s tate utilities , s ubs tantial C O 2 s avings have ac c rued at 3 Stations of s tate utilities and a annual potential of over 3 0 0 ,0 0 0 tonnes of C O 2 reduc tion has been identified.
