Chipset Specifications
Chipset Specifications
Pentium/Pentium MMX | Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Pentium III | Pentium4 | Core 2 | Athlon/Duron | Itanium | Athlon 64/Opteron
The chipsets whose names are blue italicized have not yet been released and the information is preliminary; some of it may be wrong. Take it with a grain of salt. This chart may or may not be updated in the future. Yeah, I know, there are waaaay too many defunct and moldy chipset charts around, but nobody seemed to address the cacheability thing; which is what this page originally started out as. Because certain chipsets share the same bus (notably the P6 bus), there may be some overlap of processors. Within each group the chipsets are listed in rough chronological order. Obviously not all chipsets are listed here.

PCI 66/64 - Supports a 66MHz or 64-bit or both PCI bus (which varies from chipset to chipset). Chipsets often implement this feature with add-on modules, not as a standard feature. Unless otherwise noted, assume PCI 2.1 compliance. AGP - Accelerated Graphics Port o 0.8v and/or 1.5v - AGP buffers only operate at 0.8v or 1.5v levels; they are NOT 3.3v safe. This excludes some older AGP cards (like the 3dfx Voodoo series, Matrox G200, and Intel i740-based cards) from use in motherboards with this chipset. Quick rule of thumb: if your card supports AGP 4x mode, it should fit and operate in a 1.5v AGP slot. SMA - Shared Memory Architecture (a bit different from UMA; basically an integrated AGP implementation) UMA - Unified Memory Architecture (shared memory)
Notes:
The ECC/Parity column refers to whether or not the chipset supports error detection and correction for the system RAM. It doesn't indicate whether any onboard L2 has error detection. Also, any ECC function for the L2 cache on various sixth generation chips is handled exclusively by the CPU itself; the chipset doesn't deal with this. A 'Yes' in this column indicates there is some sort of error detection, but I'm not sure what flavor. Many chipset features (such as the maximum amount of L2 cache or pseudo-synchronous operation) are not always implemented in all motherboards. Simply because a chipset supports a particular feature doesn't mean your motherboard necessarily has that feature. The only bus speeds listed with each chipset are those that it officially supports. The Athlon, Willamette, Foster, and Merced chipsets all use a dual (2x) or quad-pumped (4x) bus that hits on the rising and falling edges of the clock, yielding a faster effective bus speed. Running chipsets at odd bus speeds (75, 83, 112, 124MHz) can be hazardous to your system's overall stability. Most chipsets can only run PCI/AGP components as well as IDE channels synchronously, which forces the various buses to run outside their specifications when running at 75/83/112/124MHz. You won't physically damage the components by running them like this, but it can cause a system to behave erratically or even corrupt the occasional hard drive partition. Use with caution. Although this page doesn't deal with 486 chipsets, beware of fake cache chips on 486 motherboards. Cache Check 7 can be helpful in determining what you have. Any chips with 'Write-Back' written on them are likely fake; write-back is a mode, not a type of SRAM chip. The only difference between the Aladdin IV and the Aladdin IV+ is the chipset Southbridge. Concerning the ALi Aladdin IV, IV+, V, and V+ chipsets: o The Aladdin IV and V chipsets may or may not be able to run in write-through mode. Personally, I don't think they can, but I really don't know. I'm assuming only write-back mode in the following paragraphs. o With 256KB of L2 present, the Aladdin IV and IV+ chipsets can use the 8Kx2 MESI cache line status bits for its modified and invalid bits, yielding 512MB cacheable with an 11-bit Tag. With 512KB of L2 cache present, the chipset can use the MESI bits if they are rearranged into 16Kx1 and one Tag bit is stolen for use as the invalid bit (like the Intel 430HX chipset does for its 512KB L2 cache), yielding 512MB cacheable with an 11-bit (effectively 10-bit) Tag. With 1MB of L2, the MESI probably can't be used at all, so two bits would need to be stolen from the TagRAM (leaving only 9 bits for address mapping), yielding 512MB cacheable in write-back mode. So, based on these assumptions: Aladdin IV, IV+ L2 Cacheable Range L2 Size 8-bit Tag 11-bit Tag 512M 512M 512M Assumptions Using 8Kx2 MESI. Using 16Kx1 MESI. One Tag bit stolen for invalid bit. No MESI. Two Tag bits stolen for invalid and modified bits.
The original Aladdin V chipset is interesting because its TagRAM is broken. If it were functioning, it would use a 16Kx10 SRAM for Tag store and 16Kx2 for MESI. With 256KB of L2, it supposedly can cache 1GB of RAM; but I have no idea how this works (you would need a 12-bit TagRAM along with the MESI bits). With 512KB, it can cache
512MB. For 1MB of L2, you would have to rearrange the MESI bits to 32Kx1 and steal an invalid bit from the Tag, yielding 512MB cacheable. That's how it's supposed to work, but since it's broken, all revisions up through Revision 'E' of the Aladdin V chipset can only cache up to 128MB in write-back mode using an external 8-bit TagRAM with 512KB of L2 cache. The chipset uses its pair of MESI bits for the dirty and invalid bits. Aladdin V, V+ (broken) L2 Cacheable Range L2 Size Cacheable Assumptions Disable internal TAG. o The Aladdin V+ adds an official 100MHz bus speed over the Aladdin V. When run at 100MHz, only 6 SDRAM rows can be used in the Aladdin V+. Also, ECC does not function above 83MHz. ALi changed its name to ULi. The ALi/ULi M1695 can accomodate AGP 8x cards, but will only run them in PCI mode. nVidia bought ALi. The AMD 640 chipset has various cacheing configurations. It can use the first seven Tag bits [6:0] of its 8-bit Tag as TagRAM with TA[7] acting as a modified bit in write-back mode. Or all 8 Tag bits can be used for addressability, each acting as its own modified line (this doubles the cacheable range in write-back mode, but is slower than if one bit were used exclusively as the modified (dirty) bit). This 8-bit scheme is the default setting for the chipset. A 9th Tag bit can be used with a single exclusive modified bit for cacheing up to 998MB in WT mode or 510MB in WB. And a 10th Tag bit is also available for cacheing up to 1998MB but, like the 8-bit Tag configuration, all Tags act as their own modified bits. The cacheable region is defined by the size of the L2 cache and which TagRAM scheme is used minus the size of the cache itself (no explanation is given in the datasheets, but because the 640 is based on a VIA chipset (the VP2/97), I believe it's the same as the VIA MVP3/MVP4 Invalid bit doohickey listed below). Of course since the chipset can only address 768MB of RAM, some of these cacheable limits are simply theoretical. AMD 640 L2 Cacheable Range L2 Size 8-bit Tag 8-bit Tag 9-bit Tag 10-bit Tag
1 modified All modified 1 modified All modified
The Shuttle HOT-603 (the only motherboard that shipped with the 640 chipset), uses the 8-bit Tag w/ 1 modified scheme for its 1MB L2, yielding 255MB cacheable in WT mode and 127MB in WB. AFAIK, the AMD 640AGP chipset was never released. The AMD Athlon processor was initially demoed with the 751/755 chipset, but the 751 (Irongate) northbridge was actually released accompanied by the 756 (Viper) southbridge instead. This chipset pair was given the name 750. The AMD 750 chipset may come bundled with the VIA VT82C686A southbridge rather than the default AMD 756 southbridge. The AMD 760 chipset only runs its memory synchronously with the FSB, so to fully utilize PC2100 (266MHz) DDR-SDRAM, a 133MHz-based CPU must be used. If the FSB is set to run at 100MHz rather than 133MHz, "PC2100" DDR SDRAM will run at 200MHz effective (same as PC1600 DDR). The AMD 760 chipset can come with either the AMD 766 southbridge or the VIA 686B southbridge. But in reality the 760 can only be found with the VIA 686B southbridge on available motherboards. The AMD 760MP chipset can only utilize PCI-66 when using a PCI-66 compatible southbridge (this excludes the AMD 766 southbridge). The AMD 762MP northbridge has specific incompatibilities with the VIA VT82C686B southbridge when write-snooping and when using ACPI suspend mode with Registered DIMMs. Note that the 762MP northbridge does not support unbuffered DIMMs; only Registered memory is supported. The ATI S1-370 TL chipset may come with the ALi 1635D or 1543 southbridge. The ATI IGP 320 chipset may come with the IXP 200 or the VIA VT82C686B southbridge. The ATI IXP250 adds wake-on-LAN and DMI functionality over the IXP200. The ATI Radeon CrossFire Xpress 1600 used to be named the Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire. The ATI Radeon CrossFire Xpress 3200 can use the M1575 or SB600 southbridges. AMD bought ATI. The Intel 430LX has 9 Tag bits available (bits [27:19]) when 512KB of L2 cache is present and 10 Tag bits (bits [27:18]) when 256KB of cache is used. So both 256KB and 512KB L2 sizes cache the same amount of memory. The Intel 430NX, 430FX, 430VX, 430HX, and 430TX chipsets do not support write-through mode for the L2 cache. The Intel 430HX chipset uses one 8-bit wide TagRAM chip (bits [7:0]) for cacheing the bottom 64MB of system memory in write-back mode. When a second 8-bit wide TagRAM chip is installed into the second socket, the chipset can use the extended Tag addresses to cache up to 512MB of RAM in write-back mode. The extra 8-bit TagRAM only adds 3 Tag bits [10:8] to the addressable cache range. The 430HX can only address 512MB of memory anyway, so more Tag bits aren't needed. The 430HX can support 0KB, 256KB, and 512KB of L2 cache. In the 256KB configuration, an external 8Kx8 SRAM is used along with the internal 8Kx2 MESI to cache up to 64MB. With 512KB present, a 16Kx8 external SRAM is used and the internal MESI is changed into a 16Kx1 configuration. You lose one bit (the invalid bit) from the MESI, so one bit from the Tag bits must be stolen for use as the invalid bit. Because it loses a Tag bit, this results in the 512KB L2 having the same cacheable range (64MB) as the 256KB configuration. If you were using the Extended 11-bit Tag mentioned above, then cacheable range for both L2 sizes would be 512MB instead of 64MB. This same cache 'twizzle' also appears to be implemented on the 430FX, 430VX, and 430TX chipsets (each mention that with 512KB, the external SRAM contains the Tag and valid bits). Because the Intel 430VX chipset was one of the first to support SDRAM, many motherboards based on this chipset only support 2-clock SDRAM DIMMs (this also applies to some early 430TX boards). There are both 2-clock and 4-clock SDRAMs. The 'clock' determines the number of DRAM chips accessed each cycle. Contact your mobo manufacturer to determine which kind
your motherboard supports. Although 4-clock SDRAM might work in a 2-clock board and, likewise, 2-clock SDRAM might work in a 4-clock mobo, the only way to tell is to try it. Most PC-66 SDRAM produced is of the 4-clock variety. All PC-100 and PC-133 SDRAM is 4-clock. Don't be surprised if it doesn't work in your motherboard. Another hang-up concerning the 430VX (as well as 430FX) chipset is the fact that it only supports 16Mbit DRAM densities. All SDRAM currently being produced is 64-Mbit or higher. 128Mbit DRAM is supported by the C-1 (and later) steppings of the 440BX chipset in certain configurations (16Mx8 organization). Documented support for Enhanced SDRAM in the 440BX was added in the Spec Update. The 1/4 PCI clock divider on the Intel 440BX and 440ZX chipsets exists, but it's unofficial. But there is no 1/2 divider for AGP, so 133MHz may be quite iffy with an AGP video card. Not to mention that anything over 100MHz is overclocking anyway. The Intel 810, 810e, 820, and 840 chipsets can *only* run its SDRAM system memory at 100MHz; therefore PC-100 (or faster) SDRAM is required even though the system bus itself actually can run at 66, 100, or 133MHz (depending on the chipset). Strange, but true. The i815 is the first Intel chipset to support PC133 SDRAM. The Intel 810L chipset comes with I/O Control Hub 82801AB (ICH0). ICH0 supports ATA-33 and 4 PCI busmasters. The Intel 810 chipset comes with I/O Control Hub 82801AA (ICH). ICH supports ATA-66 and 6 PCI busmasters. The i810e and the DC100 version of the i810 chipset support 4MB of display cache for Z-buffer and come with the ICH controller hub, not ICH0. The Intel 810 chipset has an erratum that prevents the SIMD instructions on the Pentium III chip from functioning; this was fixed with the 810E version of the chipset. The ??? stepping of the 810e and 810e2 chipsets support the Pentium III Tualatin processor. The older ??? stepping does not. The Intel 82802 FirmWare Hub comes as either a 4Mbit flash memory FWH (82802AB) or an 8Mbit flash memory FWH (82802AC). The Intel 820 chipset supports D-RDRAM technologies in densities as high as 256Mbit, but SDRAM (via the MTH) is limited to 128Mbit. To achieve 1GB of memory with SDRAM on the i820, Registered SDRAM must be used. Note that SDRAM support has been removed from the 820 chipset because of reliability concerns. The Intel i815e and i815ep differ from the i815 and i815p by what controller hub they use. The 'e' chipsets use ICH2 and the non-'e' chipsets use the older ICH. The i815p and i815ep chipsets do not have integrated graphics controller. The i815g and i815eg chipsets only have the integrated graphics controller and do not have an AGP slot. The Intel 815 chipsets can support 3 double-sided DIMMs when running the RAM at 100MHz, but only 2 double-sided DIMMs when running it at 133MHz. In order to run the system memory at 133MHz, the front side bus must run at 133MHz. Conversely, you *can* run system memory at 100MHz with the FSB at 133MHz. Also, memory can be run at 100MHz (but not 133MHz) when using a 66MHz FSB. The B-0 stepping of the 815, 815e, 815p, and 815ep chipsets support the Pentium III Tualatin processor. The older A-2 stepping does not. The Intel ICH3 integrates the firmware hub. The Intel 840 chipset comes with a choice of three optional components: P64H (64-bit PCI controller hub), MRH-R (Rambus memory repeater hubs that allow for more Rambus RIMMs on each channel), and MRH-S (SDRAM memory repeater hub to allow SDRAM to function on the motherboard). As much as 4GB of unbuffered SDRAM or 8GB of Registered SDRAM may be used on the i840. Note that the SDRAM memory repeater hub has been removed from the spec due to reliability problems. The Intel 840 chipset can only support quad CPUs with a 100MHz bus; running quad CPUs on a 133MHz bus is not validated. Dual CPUs on a 133MHz bus is fine, however.
In October, 2002, official PC1066 RDRAM support was added to the 850E chipset. The Intel 855 (Tulloch) chipset was originally billed in the press as being simply a cut-down version of the 850 Tehama, with a single Rambus channel and smaller memory capacity for use in lower-end systems. Later "reports" pegged it as a Tehama successor supporting 4i Rambus, 32-bit RIMMS, PC1066 RDR, and even 8x AGP. I'm honestly not sure which leaked specs are correct. And since it was cancelled, we may never really know. The Intel 845G and 845GL are picky in what memory specs they support (single-sided/doublesided, etc.) See Intel's datasheets for more info. The Intel 845GL and 845GV do not support an AGP slot. The Intel 7205 chipset can only runs its memory synchronously with the FSB. Identical pairs must be used for Dual Channel operation. The Intel 945GZ chipset does not support any PCI Express slots. The NVidia nForce chipsets differ by what AGP texturing (memory for graphics) configuration they use. Crush 11 uses a 64-bit SMA configuration, sharing main memory with the rest of the system. Crush 12 uses a dual channel DDR configuration (effectively 128-bit) with one channel (a separate dedicated DIMM) used for the onboard graphics memory. If an external AGP card is present the second memory channel can be utilized by the system instead. The same is true for the Crush 17 and 18 chipsets, respectively. Though it looks like Crush 17 got dropped from NVidia's lineup. The nForce chipsets come both with and without a Dolby Digital 2.1 encoder (MCP-D comes with the encoder, MCP does not). The nForce2 chipsets can come with either the more advanced MCP-T or a cut-down version, the MCP[2]. I've called it MCP[2] because it's a revised version of the MCP (with USB 2.0 and AC97). MCP[2] can also be combined with the older nForce northbridges (nForce 230 and 430) as can MCP-T (nForce 230-T and 430-T). The nForce3 Pro 150 has a 16-bit downlink and 8-bit uplink for its Hypertransport link. The nForce3 Pro 250 has 16-bit links for both directions. The OPTi Viper, Viper-N, Viper-N+, and ViperMax chipsets can either use Tag address 0 from the primary Tag chip for the dirty bit, leaving seven Tag bits (D[7:1]) for addressing (which halves the max cacheable in WB mode). Or use a 32Kx9 TagRAM chip, which includes a dedicated dirty bit (D[8]). Or use D[0] from a separate Tag chip as a dirty bit. The latter scheme disregards the seven other Tag bits (D[7:1]) on the secondary Tag chip. The Viper, Viper-N, Viper-N+, and ViperMax support up to 2MB of asynchronous cache or 512KB of synchronous cache. The SiS 5571 originally was supposed to support up to 1MB of PB L2 cache, but the max is actually 512KB. The SiS 5571, 5597/98, 5581/82, and 5591/92 chipsets have a separate internal dirty bit so the entire TagRAM can be used for address mapping in write-back mode. The L2 cache on the SiS 5597/98, 5581/82, 5591/92, and 530 chipsets can only run in write-back mode (write-through can only be used for cache sizing). The SiS 5597 differs from the SiS 5598 only in what form factor motherboard it is designed for. The SiS 5581/5582, SiS 5591/5592, VIA VP3 (597/597AT), and VIA MVP3 (598/598AT) also differ from each other only by what form factor board they are designed for. The SiS 5591 chipset has a 100MHz bus, but only in the later revisions. The SiS 530 and 620 chipsets may come with either the 5595 or 960 southbridge. AFAIK, the SiS 621 chipset was never released. It was essentially replaced by the SiS 630. The SiS 630S chipset differs from the 630E chipset in it allows for an AGP slot for video card upgrades; the 630E does not. And it supports VC SDRAM memory. The SiS 645 and 650 chipsets support up to 3GB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM. When using the faster PC2700 (DDR 333) only 2 DIMMs can be used, limiting the chipset to 2GB max mem. The SiS 646 chipset was renamed 645DX. The SiS 648FX chipset supports up to three DDR-333 (PC2700) or two DDR-400 (PC3200) DIMMs. The SiS 650GX is the same as the 650 chipset except it does not support an AGP slot.
The SiS 651 chipset can support a maximum of three PC2100 DDR DIMMs or two PC2700 DDR DIMMs. The SiS 661FX chipset can support up to 3GB of PC2700 DDR or 2GB of PC3200 DDR. The SiS 655TX adds "Advanced Hyperstreaming Engine" over the 655FX, otherwise they're the same. The SiS 741 chipset supports an external AGP slot in addition to its internal video chipset. The SiS 740 chipset does not have the external slot. The SiS 760GX may also be paired with the AGP-supporting 964 southbridge. The VIA VP, VP2, VP2/97, VPX, VPX/97, and VP3 all seem to use the same cacheing scheme as the AMD 640 mentioned above (including subtracting the size of the L2 from the top of cacheable RAM to get the true cacheable range). Therefore: o VIA VP, VP2, VP2/97, VPX, VPX/97, VP3 L2 Cacheable Range L2 Size 8-bit Tag 8-bit Tag 9-bit Tag 10-bit Tag

BEDO support was removed from the VIA VP2 datasheet. Any ECC capability was removed from the VIA VPX and VPX/97 chipsets. Even though the VIA VP3 and Apollo Pro chipsets may claim to support DDR SDRAM, this support refers to an older specification of the memory type. These chipsets are not compatible with the current DDR spec. Support for DDR-SDRAM, ESDRAM, and VC SDRAM was removed from the VIA MVP3 chipset specs. Some motherboards may combine the VIA MVP3 northbridge with the 596A (or 596B) southbridge rather than the 586B southbridge. The VIA MVP3 and MVP4 max out at 127.5MB cacheable when 512KB of L2 is present, 255MB cacheable with 1MB of L2, and 510MB cacheable with 2MB of L2 in write-through mode. The unusual cacheable ranges stem from the fact that the the top Tag address value (11111111, which would normally map an area the size of the L2 cache into RAM) is used as an invalid bit (there is no separate invalid bit within the chipset). Since this Tag address is lost, this area at the top of addressable RAM cannot be cached. So basically you figure out the cacheable RAM size according to the L2 size and 8-bit TagRAM and then subtract out the amount of L2 cache from the total cacheable area to get the actual cacheable amount. This also applies to write-back mode, but because one Tag bit is used as a dirty (modified) bit, the amount of cacheable RAM is half that of write-through, and then the L2 cache size is subtracted out to get the final cacheable range. See, this stuff is easy. ;-) Or in other words: o VIA MVP3, MVP4 L2 Cacheable Range

The VIA Apollo Pro133 and Pro133A chipsets may come with either the 596B or 686A southbridge. While 8 memory banks (2GB max) are technically supported on the VIA Pro133, it is recommended that only 6 banks (1.5GB max) be used. When using PC133 SDRAM on the VIA Pro133A chipset, only 6 banks may be used. All 8 may be used with PC100 SDRAM. The VIA ProMedia with integrated Trident AGP was renamed to PM601 and was then renamed again to PLE133. And the PM-133 (with S3 AGP) used to be called the ProMedia-II. The VIA PM-133 chipset allows an AGP slot in addition to the integrated graphics; the PL-133 does not have the AGP slot. I'm not exactly sure what the differences between the VIA P4X-266A and P4X-266E are. The VIA PT-600 and PT-800 were originally named the P4X-600 and P4X-800. The VIA KX-133 does not support the Thunderbird or later Athlons because of different bus signal types. The VIA KZ-133 chipset was renamed to KT-133. The VIA KT-133E chipset supports the PowerNow! Features of the mobile Athlon/Duron CPUs, though it can still be found in desktop systems. The VIA KM-133 chipset allows an AGP slot in addition to the integrated graphics; the KL-133 does not have the AGP slot. The VIA KT-266A comes with memory performance enhancements over that of the KT-266. The VIA KT-333 may be paired with the VT8233 or (on some boards) the VT8235. The VIA KT-400A may be paired with the VT8235 or the VT8237. The VIA Apollo Pro-266T, P4X-266, and P4X-266A all may come with the optional PCI-66/64 VPX controller. While many Athlon-compatible VIA chipsets may claim support for ECC memory, they may not actually utilize the ECC functionality beyond the booting stage. The VIA K8T-400M used to be known as the K8HTB.

"PC150" and "PC2400" are not recognized specifications; they're just overclocked PC133 SDRAM and PC2100 DDR. QDR SDRAM is not a different type of memory. It is standard DDR SDRAM that is utilized by the chipset as a double-sided memory stick where each DIMM bank (side) can be accessed almost simultaneously. This obviously will only work with double-sided DIMMs and requires a specially designed DIMM to deal with the signalling. When used with a 133MHz FSB (front side bus) PC600 Rambus only operates at 266MHz base clock. When used with a 100MHz FSB PC700 only runs at 300MHz base clock. PC800 can operate at 400MHz regardless of the speed (100 or 133MHz) of the FSB. PC700 is only supported on the i820 chipset. Rambus 32-bit RIMMs are effectively 32-bits wide, but in reality two 16-bit wide channels are contained on one module, so the chipset still sees it as dual channel. The same is true for 64-bit modules; they use four 16-bit channels on a single module.
The following table presents a *generalized* view of what the L2 cacheability range is for various direct-mapped L2 and Tag bit configurations. The table reflects the assumption that the dirty bit that is needed in write-back mode must come from the TagRAM bits, and is not a separate bit within the chipset itself. Not all chipsets necessarily follow this assumption. And if the chipset does have a separate dirty bit, then the amount of memory that can be cached in write-back mode is the same as writethrough.

In write-through mode the amount of memory that can be cached (addressed) by the L2 cache SRAM is dependent on the amount of L2 cache and the width of the TagRAM. For
direct-mapped caches, the size of the L2 cache is one cache page. The Tag bits define the number of memory addresses the cache-size pages can be mapped to. So if you have 512KB of L2 cache and a 7-bit Tag width, the cache page is 512KB and the number of unique addresses that can be defined by the Tag is 128 {27 = 128}. This translates into 64MB cacheable in write-through mode {512KB * 128}. An 8-bit Tag can define 256 addresses, and so with 512KB can cache 128MB of RAM. Every additional Tag bit that is added effectively doubles the amount of cacheable memory. In write-back mode, you must use one of the Tag bits as a modified (dirty) bit, so the amount of addressable memory is reduced by half. That same 512KB of cache with the 8 bits of TagRAM (actually 7 Tag bits and 1 dirty bit) can only address 64 megabytes of main memory in write-back mode {512KB * 27 = 64MB}, half that of write-through mode. This does *not* apply to the 2-way, 4-way, or 8-way set associative caches found on various 6th generation processors; only to direct-mapped cache. For direct-mapped caches, the Tag addresses map an entire cache page to memory; for set-associative, the Tags map cache sets (two, four, or eight cache lines, depending on the associativity). Note that the math here is just quick and dirty. For a much better explanation of how this works, see The PC Guide, Caches and Their Design, and section 2.27 of the CSIPHC FAQ. The following table is a list of the L2 cacheable ranges for various 6th generation processors that have L2 cache built onto the chip, die, or substrate. All cacheability issues are handled by an on-Chip TagRAM; the motherboard's chipset does not deal with the cacheable range for this L2 at all. All caches are in write-back mode (a separate pair of MESI bits is used to determine the cache state: Modified, Exclusive, Shared, or Invalid).

Notes:
The listed stepping only refers to the core CPU stepping ID. On the Pentium II, Pentium III, and Xeon CPUs that have discrete, external cache chips (not the Coppermine and Cascades chips), it isn't the core chip that determines cacheability. Instead, an additional cache controller chip (containing the TagRAM and MESI bits) mounted to the SEC substrate dictates actual cacheable range. It
just so happens that certain steppings of certain CPUs are only paired with select cache controllers. For example: On the Pentium II, the 82459AB and 82459AC cache controller chips can cache up to 512MB of RAM. And the 82459AD controller chip can cache up to 4GB of memory. The older Pentium II Klamath chips come with the 82459AB controller and the initial Deschutes chips (6-5-0 step) come with the 82459AC cache controller, and therefore can only cache up to 512MB.
The P-Pro has two (or three for the 1MB P-Pro 200) chips in its dual cavity CPU design. One chip is the core die; the other is the cache die. The cache controller and TagRAM bits on the Pentium Pro are built onto the cache chip's die. The Celeron, Pentium-III Coppermine, Xeon Cascades, Pentium Pro OverDrive, and K6-3 have the L2 cache (along with it's controller and TagRAM bits) built on-Die. The Cumine PGA is the Pentium III Coppermine in the FC-PGA package. The Cumine-128 is the Celeron Coppermine-128. Despite their name, the Coppermine chips use aluminum interconnects, not copper. The K7 (Athlon) is an unusual beast in that its primary TagRAM bits are included on the core CPU die itself (even though the L2 is off-Die). This on-Die Tag can utilize 512KB of external L2 cache on the SEC and can cache up to 64GB of RAM (the model 1 Athlon supports PAE-36 memory extensions; the model 2 Athlon supports both PAE-36 and PSE-36). But if there is more than 512KB of external L2 present, then the internal Tag can only provide partial coverage and an external cache controller must provide some of its own Tag bits. The L2 on the K7 is 2-way set associative for 512KB, 1MB, and 2MB cache sizes. For 4MB, 8MB, and 16MB cache sizes, the L2 operates as direct mapped cache. The K7 has a 64-byte (512-bit) cache line size; the Intel P6/P-II/Celeron chips have 32-byte cache lines. The K6 also has 64-byte cache lines, but it's broken down into two 32-byte sectors. The P-4 has 128-byte cache lines broken down into two 64-byte sectors. On the AMD K6 and early K6-2's (5-8-0 step, 26050), the write-allocate function cannot be used on memory addresses above 508MB. The later K6-2 CXT (5-8-C step, 26351) and K6-III chips do not suffer from this limit with write-allocate. AFAIK, this doesn't affect the chip's cacheable range for its L1 cache. Even though the Pentium III Coppermine and Pentium III Xeon Cascades chips both use the same core die, Intel says the Coppermine's L2 only caches up to 4GB of RAM. The Xeon version can cache up to 64GB. Intel originally stated that the L2 cache on the Pentium II OverDrive for Socket 8 systems could cache up to 64GB of memory. The datasheet now says it caches only 4GB; I'm not sure which is correct. Even though many of the chips listed above have 64GB as their cacheable range, anything over 4GB is rather uncommon with x86 architectures. To even address more than 4GB, you need to use an extended memory architecture (PAE-36 or PSE-36). Cacheable ranges above 4GB are technically possible, but are not commonly used. BTW, the AMD K7 also has a 43-bit (8TB) memory mode, but
this is an Alpha addressing mode, not x86. Presumably the K7 has enough Tag bits to fully cache this memory space as well. In every case that I'm aware of, the processor's L1 cache can cache the full amount of memory that is addressable by the CPU.
