One of the primary Engineering Departments of the Institute, the Department of Civil Engineering offers B. Tech., M. Tech. and Ph.D. degrees programmes. The Department actively promotes curriculum development activity by updating existing courses, developing new courses and preparing resource material for teaching. The Department has a number of ongoing research projects and sponsored research schemes from public and private sector organizations. It undertakes industrial consultancy work as a part of its interaction with industry and also organizes Seminars / Symposia for professional interaction. All in all, the department contributes to the overall progress of civil engineering activities throughout the country and gives an impetus to the progress of the nation.

I take this opportunity to introduce the Department of Civil Engineering. Since its inception the Department has been imparting high quality education at UG and PG levels, actively engaging with the industry and carrying out research in frontier areas. Versatility of the Department can be gauged from the fact, it offers 8 M.Tech Programmes. The Department takes pride in having excellent and dedicated faculty. The students are trained in diverse areas of Civil Engineering through lectures, tutorials, mini and major projects etc. The broad training imparted to the students coupled with their innate quality prepares them to meet more than adequately any challenge in their professional life.

I.I.T Delhi is a premier institute for quality education and scientific research. It has achieved global recognition. Our department offers B.Tech and 8 M.Tech programmes in different specializations. The Department is also actively engaged in research activities in different areas. Our alumni have made their mark in all walk of life world over. Our students are recruited by large number of Organizations of repute. These organizations visit our Institute for campus selection. JEE (B.Tech Course): Joint entrance examination for admission in the B.tech, is one of the most competitive examinations in the world. Each year about 2,00,000 students compete with each other and only 2% finally make it into an IIT. GATE (M.Tech Courses): The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is another highly competitive Entrance Examination, which strives to identify, at the National level, meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Postgraduate Programmes in Engineering etc.

Construction Engineering & Management
The students get their essential knowledge and skills from a curriculum which is a mix of technical, managerial and business courses which has been developed with industry interaction and inputs. The curriculum includes Construction & Contract management, Construction Equipments, Construction Economics, Project planning, software's like AUTOCAD,P3-PROJECT PLANNER, TORA

Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering

The students cover a wide range of areas such as Engineering Behaviour of soils; Dams and Earth retaining structures; Foundation design; Soil dynamics; Geoenvironmental Engineering; Ground improvement geosynthetics;Earthquake Geotechnics

Rock Engineering & Underground Structures

The students are exposed to various topics such as design of underground structures, slopes, rock foundation, support systems, excavation, blasting techniques, underground space technology, FEM in geotechnical engineering.

Water Resources Engineering

In this programme the students acquire sound theoretical and practical groundings in the areas of surface &ground water hydrology, river hydraulics, Hydropower, FEM, optimization techniques in water resources.

Structural Engineering
This programme focuses on analytical, computational and experimental aspects of structural analysis and design. The students get a grasp over a wide range of areas such as Structural analysis, Earthquake design, FEM in structural engineering, structural dynamics, prestressed structures, design of concrete structures and buildings.

Environmental Engineering & Management

The students cover a wide range of areas such as Water quality management, Wastewater treatment and design, Sewarage and sanitation, Environment Impact assessment, Industrial waste treatment, Air pollution & control

Transportation Engineering
The students cover a wide range of courses like Traffic Engineering & Simulation, Pavement materials, construction and design, Geometric design of highways, Urban and regional planning, Public transportation systems.

Dr. P.S. Rana
B.Tech, 1970, former Chairman & Managing Director of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), has been instrumental in diversification of the HUDCO portfolio, through notably, Joint Ventures, Consultancy Services etc. Dr. Rana has also been President, Indian Building Congress, Chairman CII National Committee on Disaster Management and many more. He has been responsible for the setting up of "National Resource Facility on Bamboo Technology" at IIT Delhi.

Mr. C.K. Jain

B.Tech, 1967, has been a very successful entrepreneur, and is the proprietor of CONCREATIONS COMBINE that manufactures Pre-cast Concrete Building Components. He has recently been focusing more on societal activities such as development of community-owned micro-hydel power generation; water sector reforms for Delhi; eradication of corruption; promotion of Right to Information Act; Pan-IIT Alumni Activities etc.

Bhupinder Singh
B.Tech, , is the senior vice president of Bentley Software which is responsible for the strategic direction and management of all Bentleys software products and development activities. Previously, Mr. Singh served as Bentleys senior vice president of the Platform Products Group. Prior to joining Bentley, Mr. Singh held various software engineering positions at Montgomery Watson Hazra and Intergraph Corporation.
